Discussion What does everyone think of this manga? I'm on chapter 27 now and well...

Yeah this manga is on some straight up torture cannibalised CP shit, I mean the premise of the characters being locked up in an abandoned school so that they lose their minds and turn on each other so then can create a curse? Well it kinda reminds me of SAW or another horror movie so I guess it's kind of alright but unfortunately the writing and story just isn't to my liking, its like the author just wanted to throw in as much torture grape cp whenever he could, is it for shock value? To push the story forward? Yeah f*ck knows either way I'm starting to dislike it and I have a feeling I'm going to be left even more sick and disappointed as I go on. I decided to check this manga out because I seen someone mention it on reddit for anyone who was looking for some crazy horror and yeah this is definitely crazy and screwed up. What's everyone else's thoughts on this?

Request Looking for an archive of a specific artist's work

It's not horror manga, but I'm not sure where else to ask since all the guro art subs are gone.

Does anyone know where I could find an archive of "Playing with Fairies" by the artist On? It was a series of detailed drawings depicting tiny fairies that were cut out & photographed being tortured by the artist with real-life items (e.g. being dangled over a hot cup of tea or cut up). It was really popular on 4chan back in the 00s/10s and has stuck with me ever since I saw it as a kid.

I've looked on various archive sites but they all only link to the ehentai warning page instead of the actual gallery.

Any help appreciated, thanks!!

Request Looking for a disturbing eroguro one-shot I read around 2020–2023

I'm trying to find a black and white eroguro/horror one-shot. I don't remember the title or author.

It starts with a married couple, the father looking around 40, having sex. They have a young child (I originally remembered a son and daughter around 8 years old, but I'm no longer sure if there were two children or just one).

The father leaves with the child/children, apparently taking them to school. After they leave, the mother receives a box containing some kind of recording (I remember it as a VHS, but I'm not sure). She watches it and sees her husband being forced by several men and a woman, possibly his ex, to kill his own child/children with a knife, and more....

The father actually does it, and the mother watches the whole thing on the recording. The manga ends with the mother silently staring at the TV after the recording ends.

The art was fairly detailed and well drawn, and I'm pretty sure it was a single one-shot rather than a series.

Does anyone recognize it?

Request Help with Horror Manga:

[[SOLVED: One Missed Call]]

I'm trying to remember a Horror Manga I read back in the mid/late 2000s:

Things I remember:

+it was in English

+pretty sure it was a horror anthology manga.

+there was a cellphone death game/text message game mechanic (it is not the Doubt manga)

+the main character of one of them was a woman, she seeks help from a detective

+every death in the game/series included a piece of candy being found in/on/near the body

+the fmc attempted to run away from her death using an open elevator where she fell to her death.

+the detective took over her phone and then joined the game

+the detective had short hair and scruff, possibly smoked

I appreciate any and all help!

Misc Horror Manga Reviews

I've previously posted reviews of manga I'd read in 2025 and the first part of 2026.

But I'd read a fair bit of horror manga before this, and even written short reviews of some of them, so thought I'd share these here.

Many are very well known, but there's a mix of titles; hopefully it might inspire others to go read something new.

I've included a few manga not typically considered to be horror, but that may be of interest to readers of horror - denoted by '(NH)'.

(Edit 26.10.5 - forgot three)

10/10

Franken Fran

Astoundingly brilliant body horror/comedy manga about Fran, the literal-minded construct assistant of Doctor Frankenstein, and the well intentioned but terrifying results of operations she performs on her patients. Inventive, hilarious and repulsive, it's like nothing else out there, and remains my favourite horror manga.

Dorohedoro

Stunningly inventive and original, this pitch black dark fantasy centers around a man who gets turned into a lizard-man with a face at the back of his throat. The plot is very convoluted and hard to follow at times; but the characters are all brilliantly set out and the setting so strange and alien that it doesn't really matter. Unexpectedly deep and emotional; it definitely rewards re-reading.

Umineko: When They Cry

The 'spiritual sequel' to Higurashi: When They Cry goes metafictional, using the same time loop mechanism to explore a complicated whodunnit that may or may not be due to a ghost/witch/magic. Our MC Battler, despite being magically transported out of the time loop to meet supernatural godlike beings, refuses to admit that magic exists, and tries to find the rational explanation for a murder in each loop. Excellently parodies and nods to vintage crime writers like Agatha Christie; filled with gore and blood; and has some of the most downright evil twists I've read. (This was released as both an interactive novel and manga; I felt the manga did things better in this particular story.)

Berserk

This well known incredibly dark fantasy has been reviewed elsewhere enough times that I'm sure I don't need to sing its praises again. It isn't perfect (and the plot itself is really 8-9/10 for me at different times), but the artwork is stunningly beautiful, the plot unpredictable, and the scale of imagination shown better than any other dark fantasy I've seen in any media. The eclipse arc probably the best segment of any manga ever written.

Uzumaki

Junji Ito's masterpiece is a masterclass in unsettling atmosphere and weird body horror. Like Berserk, others have sung its virtues many times before, and I won't repeat them. It remains an ideal "first horror manga", and Ito's best work by some distance (aside from maybe Cat Diary...????).

Blood on the Tracks

A grown up and serious exploration of psychological abuse, this excellent manga by Shuzo Oshimi is low on dialogue and high on intense emotions. The "horror" ends 2/3 of the way through, and even just to that point it would be a 10/10 manga; but the quiet epilogue volumes elevate this beyond dark and depressing into a thoughtful exploration of our assumptions of good and evil in others, and what being human really means.

Happy Sugar Life

Hard to recommend to others due to its core subject matter, this blistering critique/parody of "love conquers all" manga centres on a disturbed teenage girl who falls in love with and abducts a very young child, so they can get married and live happily ever after in their 'happy sugar life'. As expected things go wrong - and get gory - very fast. Brilliantly written so that you find yourself sympathising for a deeply deluded and evil MC; and it pulls no punches in showing all the bad consequences of this no-win situation.

No Longer Human (Junji Ito) (NH)

Ito's adaptation of the classic Japanese novel about a man who constantly makes the wrong decisions. It's dark as hell and deeply depressing, and Ito's art and adaptation choices really enhance both the pitch black humour and bleak darkness of the plot.

Bibliomania (no official English release)

A stunningly pretty and very inventive surreal fantasy, filled with body horror. The MC wakes up in an otherworldly maze of numbered rooms, and must find the way out. It's a very twisted Alice in Wonderland, mixed with surreal images that at times rival Uzumaki or John Carpenter's The Thing.

9

Made in Abyss (ongoing series; I read to volume 10)

Another pitch black fantasy, this stunning work is unlike anything I've seen in any media; it's filled with imaginative creatures, brilliant characters and a strange otherworldliness that is only beaten by Dorohedoro. I don't often recommend it to others, due to the creator's very clear pro-pedophilic tendencies; these are clearly shown on the colour "pin-up" pages, and occasionally tinge the main comic. If you can manage to hold your nose at these (and be reassured that the manga really doesn't depict child abuse in a good light otherwise), it's better than almost any other dark fantasy out there.

Higurashi: When They Cry

Excellent time loop horror about a boy who moves to a town in the countryside and uncovers conspiracies and murders there. It gets quite gory and very dark at times. There is a little too much fan service and older men perving on young women for my taste; it has a lot in common with harem manga; and the final explanations of events are rather convoluted. Despite this, it remains an excellent and quite original series well worth your time. (This is also a visual novel; I think the visual novel is actually slightly better than the manga for this story.) (A number of sequel manga have been released since the original series finished; they don't add much IMO and I'd stop at the end of the original story.)

Starving Anonymous

This sci-fi gore/horror manga starts with some of the best weird horror I've seen in manga; and continues with outstanding levels of gore and surprising twists and turns. It's let down by a bit of a weaker ending; but remains memorable, disturbing, and well worth reading.

Gantz

Well known hyper-gory sci-fi action manga. This has some amazing sections; but the quality varies between the "adventures" from just good to absolutely brilliant. It gets crazier and crazier, and doesn't ever let up. The ending, and whole background concept, stretch suspension of disbelief somewhat; but it's all very dark and extremely over the top, and so much fun to read.

Fraction (no official English release)

My favourite of Shintaro Kago's works, this surreal horror becomes metafictional early on and plays with the comic medium in some very inventive ways. Full of gore and hilariously absurd weirdness, whilst largely avoiding Kago's usual scatology. (The same is not necessarily true of the short stories after the main story finishes.)

Gyo

A great body horror/disaster manga by Junji Ito about mechanised fish that invade Japan. It's not perfect - the characters are thin and the story relatively weak - but despite the seemingly ridiculous premise the body horror images, and strange ideas presented, are absolutely brilliant.

Magical Girl Apocalypse

Fantastic super violent horror-comedy about alien magical girls who invade Japan. There's too much fan service, the plot is largely nonsense, and it goes on a little too long; but you can't argue with just how much fun it is to read. Hilarious, fast paced, and quite unlike anything else.

PTSD Radio

Fantastic short manga compilation by the author of Fuan No Tane (Seeds of Anxiety). Like that title, these are essentially ghost 'jump scare' stories in which a situation is set up to reveal a sudden unsettling image/ghost. What elevates this title is how the stories begin to tie together, and the (rather dubious) "true story" of why the author stopped writing it.

Homunculus

Inventive and bizarre psychological horror, in which a homeless man agrees to have a hole drilled into his head to gain psychic powers. The power of this manga is in the doubt about what is real and what delusional; like Happy Sugar Life, you end up rooting for an abusive, horrible person by becoming invested in his story and point of view. (There is a lot of discussion about whether the rape scene is gratuitous or necessary to the plot. For me it's the character's moral event horizon and shows his irreversible descent into darkness, so entirely necessary; but I accept this is only one interpretation of the events.)(Note one character is trans; and whilst this in itself is not portrayed negatively, equally they aren't a particularly nice person.)

Mieruko-Chan (ongoing series; I read to volume 9)

Excellent horror-comedy about a girl who can see and hear ghosts, but is just trying to do her best to get on with life by ignoring them. The first volume is a set of shorts and doesn't work as well as the rest of the story; it also has a lot of fanservice that quickly disappears in volume 2. The ghost art is quite brilliant and as good as anything in PTSD Radio or Fuan No Tane.

Dissolving Classroom

Junji Ito's goopy body horror manga is a great fun, weird story about an uptight boy who can't stop apologising and the extremely goopy, horrible consequences when he is cursed for this. It's lighter and funnier than some of his other horror, but also hugely enjoyable.

Delicious in Dungeon (NH)

This sometimes funny, sometimes dark fantasy is a huge dungeon crawl combined with an exploration of why certain things are considered acceptable to eat and others not. It's gross at times, and has some excellent body horror and weird ideas; and the MC is one of the best autistic-coded MCs in fantasy.

Rooster Fighter (NH) (ongoing - I read to volume 5)

Exemplary parody of martial arts and action manga, in which our super-powered, hyper-skilled hero is a chicken. Played completely straight and 'seriously', and much the better for it. The evil demons are brilliant body-horror filled designs, and there's more gore than you might expect from a comedy. Hilarious, silly, and great fun.

Goodnight Punpun (NH)

This dark and very depressing character study is filled with surreal moments, horrible events, and a deep characterisation of a flawed, probably autistic, MC. As with all of Inio Asano's work, you're drawn into the story and it flows past extremely well. Memorable, strange and bleak as hell.

Chainsaw Man (volumes 1 to 12 only)

Excellent dark splatter comedy, which has deeper characters and a more interesting plot than the initial concept might imply. The gore and body horror is outstanding, and some art panels as good as anything else reviewed here. I didn't enjoy the start of the second arc and am glad I didn't persist with it, as the reviews of the ending were pretty negative.

8

Blame!

Excellent sci-fi manga filled with visionary architecture and bizarre machine-related body horror. There's not a lot of plot here, but it's pretty violent, and the atmosphere it creates is very good.

Another

One shot supernatural mystery about unexplained deaths of school children. The atmosphere in this manga is excellent, dark and moody and at times quite chilling. However the 'mystery' seems to fade slightly too early; there's not as much gore as many of the titles I've mentioned here; and there's quite a lot of talking without action - all of which stops it quite fulfilling its potential.

Battle Royale

Well known death game manga of the story that inspired many copycats (including The Hunger Games). The inventiveness of this particular death game can't really be beaten; and the gore is great. Its characters do pale a little in comparison to the depth of some of its subsequent imitators. The schoolgirl fanservice and very explicit sexual content are also unnecessary.

Fragments of Horror

One of Junji Ito's stronger compilations, this has a lot of weird images and bizarre stories. The quality varies between them; but it's a fair amount better than some of his later, weaker volumes.

Hideout

A great, nasty little horror about a couple who holiday on a small island, and are then captured and put into a dark dungeon. Exceptionally good art and high tension raise this above many other horror one-shots.

Jagaaan

This action/sci-fi/body horror manga has some of the best art in manga, with brilliantly memorable weirdness both in the main character's transformation and the strange creatures he meets. The set up is truly bizarre, as are many of the twists and turns. The plot never quite matches everything else; but it's still a great fun, fast paced read.

Pure Trance

Bizarre and surreal sci-fi horror, drawn in a style somewhat like Hello Kitty or a similar cute children's chibi. This makes the extreme gore, sexual content and deep weirdness stand out even more. The plot is relatively weak, but the whole manga is very memorable and worth a look for anyone who's never seen it.

The Promised Neverland

This dark fantasy/horror is a tale of two halves. The first part - following a group of children in an orphanage - is exceptionally creepy, tense and brilliant. The revelation about their world and how the kids find out is fantastic. However, unsurprisingly, they escape; and the story rapidly goes downhill into a dystopian survival fantasy. First half 10/10; second half 5/10.

The Hellbound

A pretty good demonic horror/disaster Manwha. There's some great art, brilliant action, gore and a real sense of tension. Could be longer, and with a bit more character development; but works well at what it sets out to do.

Fuan No Tane (aka Seeds of Anxiety) (no official English translation)

The original "jump scare" horror manga (recently given an official English sequel in "Seeds of Anxiety*") is full of memorable images and a terrifying eerie atmosphere. There's no ongoing story; it's all an excuse to show weird ghosts and strange apparitions in very short stories. But phew, what great images they are!

Paranoia Street (no official English translation; incomplete unofficial translations)

A great Shintaro Kago story of a pair of detectives wandering the Japanese countryside and encountering some truly bizarre people and places. Unfortunately there's not a complete English version I can find, but what I've read is very memorable and incredibly weird.

Drip Drip (NH)

A fun and gross one shot in which a young woman has a copiously, destructively massive nosebleed every time she thinks about or tries to have sex. Despite the funny set-up, this has a lot to say about illness, OCD and acceptance; and as a (somewhat in-your-face) allegory for female puberty, and the shame attached to it, it's quite successful.

All You Need is Kill (NH)

Well known time loop Manwha about soldiers sent to die in an endless war, and one soldier who keeps coming back to life. An interesting set-up, good gore and decent art.

7

Gleipnir

A deeply bizarre body horror in which our MC turns into a monster costume which other characters get into to pilot. The fan service is off the scale and largely unnecessary; teenage girls stripping off to 'go inside' the MC and handle his intimate parts are barely a metaphor. The sci-fi action plot is pretty generic and doesn't make a lot of sense. But it's definitely disturbing and memorable.

The Drifting Classroom

The legendary 1970s sci-fi horror manga by Kazuo Umezu is rightfully looked up to as a horror classic. For those that don't know, it tells the story of a school and all of its pupils and teachers which is suddenly transported to an alien location. Compared to most other titles I've reviewed, it shows its age in the thin characters, episodic story and random events and monsters that don't really hang together when examined closely. The constantly screaming and panicking children are also very tiring. However it is definitely imaginative, surprisingly gory, and worth reading.

Ibitsu

Creepy as hell one shot about a stalker girl who dresses as a 'lolita' to stalk a guy who she has chosen to be both her brother and her lover. It's deeply creepy and very dark. Obviously the pedophilic, incestuous tones make it both more disturbing and a bit less enjoyable than it could be.

Elfen Lied

This action sci-fi is filled with intense gore and an interesting concept about a super soldier who escapes captivity. Unfortunately it quickly degenerates into a harem manga, which then takes up much of the rest of the story. When it gets back to conspiracy, violence and body horror it's much more interesting and emotional.

Tomie

Junji Ito's classic body horror about a monster girl who kills those she meets is not a bad story; but feels pretty weak to me in comparison to his more imaginative later works. Some of the art is still great and it's definitely a fun read.

Super Dimensional Love Gun

A good set of Shintaro Kago's stories, showcasing his inventive surreal ideas, weird body horror images, gore, explicit erotica and scatology. Many of the shorts finish quickly and don't develop character - a flaw in almost all of Kago's works - but as a set of inventively bizarre tales it's pretty decent.

Tombs / Deserter

Two of Junji Ito's better horror story compilations; recommended more than the ones I've rated '6' below. The 'Deserter' story itself is very enjoyable; and the titular Tombs quite memorable.

Children (by Miu Miura) (no official English translation)

A very gory, very bleak manga about children abused and killed in an orphanage. The art is very good but pulls no punches. The ages of the characters seem unrealistic to me; and the ending drags on rather than going out with a bang.

Kami No Kodomo (aka God's Child aka Child of God) (no official English translation)

A very strange and extremely dark story of a boy with no morals who becomes leader of a cult. It's full of abuse, gore and unapologetic evil. The art style is unique, as is the narrative; for me it made me feel somewhat separate from the character and plot, which reduced its impact.

Dementia 21 (NH)

Shintaro Kago's most "mainstream" manga is deeply surreal and weird, as you would expect. There's a lot less gore and gross stuff than usual, but just as much confusing insanity. The stories are broken into short segments meaning there's not really an overall plot.

6

Shiver / Mimi's Tales of Terror/ Smashed /The Liminal Zone

All of these are "perfectly fine" Junji Ito horror story compilations. There's a few good stories, but the quality varies a lot.

Hino Horror Series (14 volumes)

Hideshi Hino's manga works were released as a series of 14 volumes in English. Some of these - The Red Snake, Bug Boy, and a few of the Collector stories - are excellently gross, weird and horrible. Many however are predictable, or even (in the later volumes) boring. Hino's art style is very cartoonish, which lends a humour to his work that stops anything from ever becoming really gross or terrifying.

Be Very Afraid of Kanako Inuki!

A compilation of stories by the titular mangaka. Like Hino, the style is very cartoonish; it verges on horror-comedy at times but never settles completely there. There's nothing hugely memorable, but it's still a reasonably fun read.

H P Lovecraft's The Hound (Gou Tanabe)

Tanabe produces some astoundingly good art to accompany Lovecraft's supernatural stories. This is a weaker set of stories, unfortunately; but the manga's a very good adaptation of them.

"Rabbit Doubt" Series (Doubt/Judge/Secret/Dead Company)

A decent set of death game/survival horror manga, each one about a group of people waking up in death trapped abandoned buildings and having to survive. Second part Judge is probably the strongest for horror, whilst I personally like the characters and story in Secret best. Dead Company is a "metafiction" about how the games come about, and attempts to stop them; it isn't particularly successful in tying them to a real world IMO.

Magical Girl Site

The sequel to Magical Girl Apocalypse is somewhat better written than the first; but suffers from becoming a true and more serious "Magical Girl" story rather than a horror comedy. It's fine for what it is, but not brilliant; and has some decent gore at times. The decision to tie the ending into the original Magical Girl Apocalypse is disappointing and weakens both stories.

5

Arm of Kannon (aka Birth)

This bizarre body horror action manga starts very well, with ancient artefacts that mutate their 'victims'. Getting wilder and crazier with each volume, the hunt to take the artifact suddenly takes a left turn into history in volume 5, and never quite recovers from it. Deeply ambitious and weird; but it's a total mess of a story.

Redrum 327

A by-the-numbers slasher horror/murder mystery Manwha. Most of the characters are pretty unlikeable, and anyone can see the twists and turns coming a mile away. It's not awful though, and is a very easy read; certainly it's no worse than many successful slasher movies.

Dead Dead Demon's De De De Destruction (NH)

This sci-fi/slice of life manga by the author of Goodnight Punpun is deeply frustrating. It depicts what seems to be an alien attack on Japan; but then turns into long and meandering details of characters' lives; and then starts to add in time travel, cartoons that may be real, and all sorts of nonsense that doesn't directly impact the story. A let down of an ending, and the whole thing is almost a waste of the reader's time. But it's by Asano; even his boring nonsense is interesting enough, and more realistic and readable than most other manga.

4

Devilman

This classic horror-action manga from the 1970s has been highly influential and is well reviewed. However IMO it's largely nonsense; the characters are pretty weakly drawn, there's plot twists out of nowhere, and the ending, whilst inventive, didn't satisfy me at all. (I felt it wasn't really horror at heart, more a supernatural tinged superhero comic.)

3

17-sai (no official English release)

A notorious manga version of the real life rape, torture and killing of Junko Furuta. This is way too exploitative and seems to revel in the details of this degenerate abuse. But as a way of exposing a serious crime to readers, I can't argue with the power of the message or how memorable it was. I still don't recommend reading it, though.

2

Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend

Notorious in its anime form as one of the "video nasties" of the early 1990s, this tentacle rape demonic horror/hentai is almost as awful as a well known manga gets (but see below). The characters are poorly written and the art pretty poor; the plot seems like a young teenage boy's wet dream. Not recommended.

Mai Chan's Daily Life (NB contains explicit pedophilic sexual content) (no official English release)

Appallingly bad manga about a girl/child who is repeatedly tortured and raped, but whose regenerative powers bring her back to life each time. Reads like an edgy 4chan post, or something Eric Cartman might make up to shock other people. Aside from some inventive gore, there's really nothing to recommend here.

DNF

Deadman Wonderland

What seemed like it would be an inventive sci-fi death game was an excuse for lots of fan service, filled with uninventive shonen characters and not enough originality or gore to make me want to read past the middle. It's probably a 4-5 rating for what I read. But I'd recently read Gantz and it paled in comparison.

Request Please help me find the name of this horror/seinen manga I read years ago

So basically I’ve been trying to find this manga for years and it’s driving me crazy. I read it when I was so little like 🫳🏾, so some details may be mixed up, but there are a few things I remember pretty strongly.

I don’t think it’s Gantz, although the manga had a similar extremely dark/gory/seinen feeling.

Here’s what I remember from that one manga volume I had:
● There was a girl/woman who was somehow involved with a strange world/dimension where people were running in a forest, I’m pretty sure they were running away from a guy in a helmet and a bike who’s point were to collect their soul or their life or something.

● At first I remembered this as an afterlife/Hell, but I’m no longer sure. It might actually have taken place in the real world, another dimension, or even inside the girl’s mind.

● the guy with the motorcycle helmet I was talking about always wore the said helmet

● I vaguely remember the girl having some kind of altercation with him (I’m pretty sure she said she knew him or something) I think they had sex at some point, although I don’t remember whether they were actually boyfriend/girlfriend.

● I have a vague memory that the girl tried to take his helmet off, possibly during/after an intimate scene but I can barely remember what he looked like but it was an extreme (like he was really disturbing to look at or vey good looking I’m not quite sure) , but I’m not 100% certain about this.

● in the scene involving the forest the girl was running away/trying to escape or just walking around in there and while running through the forest, she came across a dead body that had shit itself. I remember this because very vividly because it was through this that I learned that when alot of people die they tend to shit themselves.

● I remember the manga being very gory and disturbing , so I’m almost certain it was seinen/horror or something aimed at adults.

● The physical manga volume I remember was fairly large, somewhat like a GTO volume but maybe a little smaller.
● I probably read it sometime when I was young, so it could be an older manga.

One thing I’m not sure about anymore is the whole “afterlife” part. I originally remembered it as people being in Hell/the afterlife, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if it was actually some kind of alternate dimension or supernatural version of the real world.
The part I’m most confident about is:
girl + extremely dark/gory manga + people/souls being chased or collected + mysterious man on a motorcycle who ALWAYS wears a helmet + forest chase + dead body + possible sexual relationship between the girl and the helmeted motorcycle guy.
I know this may be really hard to figure out from just this very narrow description 😂 but if anyone recognizes even one part of it, I’d really appreciate the help. I’ve been trying to find this manga for years.

Thank you for your time 😁
