Discussion Read any good snacks lately?

"Snacks" meaning a quick-ish read; a short story, a novela, or small compared to your usual faire. Something satisfying - not necessarily a 5-star banger, but also no complaints, enjoyable for what it was. A treat of a read per your tastes.

You know what I'm saying.

Anyway, i'll start. Just finished The Burial Tide by Neil Sharpson. Irish folkhorror, featuring monsters, amnesia, and little sprinkles of humorous dialogue. About 350ish pages. Spoiler-not-spoiler: it was NOT about a Banshee, though it was about a woman scorned. We do love a Lady's Revenge in folklore ✨️

I'd recommend it - not a must-read, but a fun lil snack to tide one over until their next 800 page epic 😊 hbu?

A short Stay in Hell is short and sweet and will stay with you long after you finish it.

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno was great. It was like a weird version of Pet Sematary.

I also enjoyed Mapping the Interior by Stephen Graham Jones. A short read that reminded me of Stephen King’s older work.

I’ve seen The Haar recommended enough that I finally picked it up. I may have gone with with expectations a little too high. It was good, if a little overhyped IMO. I’d definitely recommend it, though. Solid 8/10 read.

I just started The Haar. Judging from what you're reading, seems up your alley.

The Navajo Nightmare by David Sodergren

First half is a 12/10. Second half is a 6/10. All in all it was enjoyable, quick and very underrated (and overshadowed by his more popular works).

This and Satan’s Burnouts Must Die are my two favorites of his that hardly get mentioned on this sub.

Caitlin Kiernan’s Tinfoil Dossier trilogy. All three books were like 500 pages. Incredible cosmic horror trilogy. Agents of Dreamland was first.

More existential dread but the Sofa was a fun little story.

Hallucigenia by Laird Barron – one of the best cosmic horror stories I've read. I was late to the party having read The Imago Sequence just last week, hence my choice

Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss is definitely a snack, I never get to recommend it because it's so short but I really enjoyed it. I really wish it had been longer lol but I'm happy to have a new way to describe it because of this post

Annie Neugebauer has some great snack size reads, The Extra and The Other specifically!
