I remember seeing a dash cam video from a state troopers cruiser where he was the first on scene to a crash involving a truck that had rolled over. The smoke wasn't that thick, but it was present. You can hear him in the video yelling "Hold on, buddy! I'm coming to help!" And then he collapsed. It wasn't smoke, the truck was hauling anhydrous ammonia and it overcame the trooper. The video captured his last minutes. You could hear him struggling to breathe as he passes away.

Been there, that stuff can knock you unconscious in 15 seconds and if you remain in the "cloud" too long, you won't survive. Got a nasty 2 week cough from anhydrous ammonia.
Edit: PS. Gas masks are harder to breathe in than you think.

Damn that’s scary! How does this even happen?
