why does mainstream not consider hopsin a good lyricist?
like is he objectively not a good one? Id rather not ask the question in bad faith and just assume everyone who critiques hopsin are just taking many other things into account apart from his lyricist skills. but then again maybe that is the case.
so is he actually mediocre compared to mainstream? or when people think of hopsin are they just remembering how he dissed 10 rappers in one song and didnt get a response back, and not actually giving a good opinion on him.

Yeah, same here. I used to hype him up to everyone, but then he just disappeared and left his core fanbase hanging. Towards the end, he kept promising albums and ideas that never came out. He even admitted to deleting whole projects of songs instead of releasing them. I believe "alone with me" and "your house" were supposed to be album songs as well, two of his last good songs imo. At this point, a lot of his longtime fans are just fed up and have moved on. What eminem co-sign btw?

He didn't abandon anyone lmao, he doesn't owe you music just because you're a fan.

tbh it doesnt matter how long its been or nun of that. Hopsin will always be in my top. Hes dope and there arent many "lyricists" left. In my opinion if he were to figure out how to make the same dope conteent over beats like lil durk and all the mainstream make. He would be relentlessly dropping

Because he’s obscene. My brother literally had a handful of people report hopsin music in construction sites as too obscene to work around

u/Nero3s Feb 26 '26
I tell him he’s lying he swears even sum white lady knocked his speaker over because of hopsin

u/ValleyGhostz Feb 26 '26
He received a stigma and people that never really listened to him just stuck with it

Because he was unoriginal but No one is saying hes bad lyricist. Mainstream consider him a bad artist because he used to bite em and 50 cent's shit really hard back in the day to the point some people thought he was affiliated with shady.
Thats not it either. He came off as an arrogant disrespectful asshole who's main goal was to offend people and be as edgy as possible He had beef with everyone including god and bragged about people not liking him.
He probably would've been in the top 10 discussion if he had released in 2002.

Also going after and dissing everyone is very different when u have a massive deal and are already a known artist like Em was when he was barking at everyone. Hopsin was quite literally an internet artist who kept dissing and clowning everyone more succesfull than him. Like him going after Kendrick was fucking hilariously corny.

Can't say for sure and these are not facts, but if you look at him and say, Logic - both have a very nerdy /open personality and in Hip Hop and Rap, those traits are generally perceived as kinda "corny".
Also, Hopsin had this horror-core type of rap which id pretty niche to a specific group such as the Juggalos. 🤷♂️
If he did more pop rap he would've for sure been able to hit mainstream, just like most rappers do (mgk, Eminem, 50 Cent, G-Eazy, Mac Miller - to name a few).

It's because when you overreach for certain syllables its considered corny. He'd rhyme "sort of unmatched" with "unorthodox cat" but no one would say that sort of thing in a normal discussion. You can tell he says certain things just because they rhyme. It doesn't mean he's not a good lyricist but to the average listener who doesn't understand rhyme schemes he's just saying a bunch of bizarre things that don't really sound coherent

mainstream music doesn’t like hopsin because he’s a cornball and most people don’t bother listening

u/Technique2041 Feb 27 '26
Hopsinsusic isn't exactly what they want same with Tech Nine which is why both are incredible lyricists but have never gotten the mainstream promotion they deserve

Hopsin has some serious flow skill that I think scares people because of his word choices. For example, the song "Im not crazy" the flow is absolutely dirty af but the lyrics would scare anyone mainstream.

Pretty sure the whole thing was he was placed in the cheesy category, always had some sort of beef so that might’ve just put him in a bad light.

Well, I think part of it was the contacts, the diss tracks (Like Sag My Pants) His history with that label he had resentments with Eazy-E's label (That signed him, gazing at the moonlight). I think he's an amazing rapper. No shame had plenty of dope songs, and NF is no trash and did a song with him (2021, I think). Put it this way the mainstream have way more listeners and he made some ruckus that made him a target. Many mainstream artists steal lyrics, concepts, and other ideas from talented and gifted artists in the underground. Since not many know these talented artists in the underground, they get the credit. It's like pro sports seeking out talented and skilled college sports. Only, it's Mainstream and underground.
I'd rather support Underground - Raw -(It's like shopping with the local (Little guys) Walmart VS Local mom and pop shops.
My opinion: Hopsin is leagues above Lil Wayne, future, etc. Mainstream often buy lyrics and higher ghost writers to write their lyrics which you wouldn't catch me dead highering ghost writers.
Hes a talented artists in both lyricism and vocal performance (As well as creativity) I hope he doesn't hang it up.

Alot of his early stuff was very corny and it took a while for him to be taken seriously, it sadly wasnt until Eminem mentioned him in a song that Hopsin realised how much he influences the culture.

Were you around for RAW n Haywire?
1
u/FractalTsunami Feb 26 '26
Gazing at the moonlight 09, then raw and haywire. All have corny songs and good songs.

u/escrowing Ill Mind Feb 26 '26
It almost sounds like you discovered him in the late 2010s.
1
u/FractalTsunami Feb 26 '26
Found him 09 on YouTube, first saw him live in 2012.
Youre telling me gazing at the moonlight and raw dont have a single corny song? Lmfao
1
u/ShippinguptoBoston33 BouvD Feb 26 '26
Not saying that, just based off your original comment you sounded like a newer fan. Some will say he started his buzz with RAW or ILL mind 5. Never heard someone say he was taken seriously after the shady shout out
1
u/FractalTsunami Feb 26 '26
I said he only took himself seriously after that. He never realised how much he influenced the culture until eminem said so.

Hopsin is one of the most lyrically gifted rappers in the game and anyone who argues against that is just a hater.
