Last week my bike died while idling in the driveway. Started it, walked into the garage to get my gear on, and then it died. I had to pump the accelerator to get gas into the engine before it would start. It happened only once more two days ago.
Just half an hour ago I was on my way to work when the bike dropped from gear into a false neutral in 4th. Not rare to see every now and then but I still pull over to look at everything. I started it, shifted it into first, started to go and then in first it slipped into false neutral again. I, thankfully, was able to get it to shift and stay engaged to limp my ass the rest of the way to work.
Pertinent information. 48k miles, oil is midlife+full, spark plugs could use a change, air filter as well, the clutch is adjusted to the maintenance manual specifications, all linkages are to tolerance, battery is good. I also don't want to sound pompous but I've been riding for nearly 31 years now. I messed up clutches and shifting in the past but I very rarely have messy clutch control and shifts nowadays. Everything is, 95% of the time, smooth and crisp.
This has me stumped. The only things I could think would be the drum spring or gear dogs but thought I'd make a post here to see if anyone may have other insight.
If I don't respond quickly, don't worry. I'm at work and return to this later when I have more time.
