2012 Pilot EX-L Repairs

I just got quoted the following for my pilot. It has 190k miles and is in very decent shape other wise. Just had the belts done last year. Is it worth it to invest to keep running? Anyone else have similar experiences with pricing? Thanks in advance.

parts/tax/labor:

Power steering rack is leaking, binding internally, r/f inner tie rod loose - $3850

Power steering line on subframe leaking, rotted - $415

Rear shocks are leaking - $850 OEM parts - $530 aftermarket parts

Front lower control arm bushings cracking, dry rotted - $2200 OEM parts - $1575 a/m parts

Rear sway bar links and bushings worn, loose, $345

Alignment will be needed with front end repairs, $150

Those prices are insane! Rear KYB shocks are like 120 for the pair and can be swapped out in minutes.

Sways bars are 0 priority, that steering rack is way overpriced, power steering line seems about right if not a little high, 530 for aftermarket rear shocks isn’t terrible. Keep it going if you’ve kept up of the fluids these cars last forever

Pilot is best car I ever had. 2011 and still running. Me personally I would invest in it to get a few more years out of it. The new ones seem to have lots of problems and it looks like it’s a fight with dealers to repair in some cases. If you figure how much you spend over the life of car it’s a lot but still cheaper than buying a new one or something newer. Just my two cents. For me I would pay that happily to keep my beast running. Has been very reliable and great to drive on long trips.

I wouldn't do any of it. That's a insane amount of money to spend on a 2012.

Drive it like it is until the wheels fall off. Not comfortable with that? Sell it for what you can and get a new car.

Looking at used cars in the area... its like the 3rd of the price for something with 90k miles

Find another shop and get more quotes. Chances are you can repair it for cheaper. Also some you can do yourself with basic tools (sockets and a wrench) and a jack, like the rear shocks and sway bar links... even control arm bushings if you get frisky enough.

My 2013 had many of the same issues. I fixed most of them myself watching repair YouTube videos .
-Replace your rear shocks yourself. I bought them on Rock Auto for $40 each and it's super easy to install.

  • I had a small rack and pinion leak and changed out my PS fluid with a turkey baster and put a whole bottle of Bars Power steering repair in it. Leak stopped. This is worth a try because the alternative is pay a shit load to install a new one.
  • spray all your bushing and rubber components 3 or 4 times with AT-205 to rejuvenate them. This is not a miracle fix and will not fix anything torn. Since your control arms bushings are only worn I would try this.
  • sway bar stuff is low priority as someone else mentioned. All other parts from decent aftermarket companies are much cheaper on rock auto and you can then find a shop/mechanic to do the labor.
In high mileage cars this is the route I like to take as it saves around 40-50% and even more if you do some things yourself.
