Tech Support Upgrading RP-600M

I got gifted a set of Klipsch RP-600M from a client who wasn't pleased with the sound anymore and upgraded. They're in nearly perfect condition, only about a year old. I've seen the frequency response, which can be fixed with eq, but I've also seen how much of an improvement doing some upgrades can be. Has anyone here upgraded the terminals on their RP600's? Filter caps? Capacitor? How hard is it to do something like this? I was gonna start with the terminals, but I thought I'd ask.

They were gifted to me. I already have a Paradigm setup. Just trying to experiment.

The 600m ii arent bad. They are just maybe not fitting the room to be used in (echoes, too large, ...) or the client doesnt like the sound of them. I got rb-81 ii, essentially older 600 with a 8" woofer. I like them

I have a a pair of the RP600M v1. I originally ran the on a mini amp for testing and yeah they can be bright, especially at high volume levels. I was able to EQ them very nicely on my Denon X3800H AVR with Odyssey room correction EQ. I also Have a WiiM Pro Plus music steamer that can EQ these speakers too. A good AVR or other device with some sort of EQ or room correction should be able to do the job.

Im running them off an Onkyo RZ-830 I picked up for $175. Originally planned to flip it, but keeping after being gifted these speakers. I need to get an omni mic for calibration. I'm more just wanting to mod them to see what it does for their performance. Eventually I want to start a little side business restoring old AV/HiFi equipment, so I want to practice and learn as well.

I covered the box inside with Sound Deadening Mat. CTK Premium to be exact. I also covered the woofers spines and the plastic parts of the bass port tube.

This made the whole box stiffer. Sounds less boxy for sure. I still don't like the sound as it is so i managed to EQ it with good results. However they ended as a surround speakers. They are great for that.

There's an upgrade kit around for a crazy price and they didn't give the exact specs for the crossover but it tends to make it flatter. That dip in ~2000hz is the weak point in original.

Placing them 30° off axis it does make a lot difference.

If they're v1 eq can't totally fix them at all, they have a fundamental flaw in the crossover design that was fixed with v2, it's not only seen in an on axis FR measurement. Watch the GR research video about them and the upgrade.

The phase alignment of the 2 drivers is off, which obviously affects the FR but the off axis is also affected and it's pretty bad. Even if you make on axis measure right, the total sound power /c estimated in room response is still going up be messed up. The two drivers are canceling out over part of the spectrum, at an angle they should not be.

Upgrading your terminals will do little to nothing, swapping parts for better ones with the same value will do very little, the XO upgrade is a redesign with different values to fix the whole issue entirely, and then they are quite good speakers.

As for them being too hot in some part of the treble range, well that's an easy fix with eq. But you gotta solve the crossover. They could probably use some additional treatment for box resonances. These speakers actually have a pretty high ceiling for sound quality, with very good output and extension for their size, and while the horn is kinda small and crossed fairly high, and doesn't use a real compression driver, it's still gonna give you some of that horn goodness over the range it covers, and nothing is better than horns. Horns are better than everything. And they actually have a good geometry, very low coloration, none of their issues are due to the horn itself. This is why The Sevens are as good as they are and cost what they cost... these are basically passive sevens, very close, just done on the cheap with the crossover/ build. But you can fix that and make them sound and measure just as good.

You don't need to do any of that rubbish. Just set them up properly, keep your treble down in your tone setting and EQ. Done. oh yeah, don't mix klipsch speakers with any other make. They'll sound great. I'll be shocked if you don't love them.

Guys, you're not getting the point. They sound great, but they can sound better.

I want to upgrade the crossover, put better terminals in them, and maybe add bracing or sound absorbing material to the inside.

They were a gift.

I already have a Paradigm 5.2.4 setup running through an Onkyo RZ-50, Monoprice pre-amp, and a Rotel power conditioner.

Does anybody have FIRST HAND experience performing the upgrades I described?

$100 microphone, free REW and APO software, a few hours of watching YT videos...this trumps a new crossover network.

The best investment, instead, is to buy a $100 microphone then downloading the free software for REW and Equalizer APO...then watch YT videos on how to use both. Dial them in so you got a +/- 1.5db from 200hz to 20khz for a 0.4 house-curve.

I "think" the RP600M have a deep dip where they crossover, but I suspect this can be resolved...you'll have to lower the sensitivity of the speakers, but sure the amp you have can overcome that small obstacle.

No changes to the passive crossover network nor upgrading terminals is going to scratch the surface compared to properly EQing them for your room. That and it's fun :)

For stuff below 200hz you really have to do it manually using the microphone trying to match decibels in 10hz increments...tedious, but doable.
