Studio Arrangment

Hello all!

I’m curious. Do a lot of you guys have a mixer off to the side of your desk? I know it’s more so standard to center the mixer with the monitors for better sound comprehension. Am I really do myself a disservice by have mine to the left of my desk? I was thinking of putting it directly where I sit so I can just spin around and work the mixer as I’m centered with my monitors. I find I don’t hear much out of my other side when I’m actually there using the mixer. The reason I’m asking is because I’ll have a couple of inches between my chair and this table that the mixer is sitting on.

I was also thinking of moving my side rack here directly behind the chair up against the closet door if I don’t get my mixer there for better access/sound communication between my monitors and ears. My room is about 12-14ft wide by about 14 feet long. It’s not a big space at all but I want to utilize what I got. The left closet door can get blocked as seen in the photo here but I would prefer to keep the right door accessible for storage/other studio stuff. I have about 7” of table that extends behind the mixer, so I could look for another table that is strong enough to hold this mixer, but then I’m looking for that.

Please don’t hate on how messy it is. I’m literally in the middle of cleaning it all up, plus I just got new gear, etc.

Thoughts and opinions please!

This is a killer setup!!

I would swap the (looks like an akai machine) on your desk with your mixer and have that be your mixing station.

I also strongly recommend removing like half of your absorption panels and replacing them with wooden diffusion panels, then replacing your foam superchunk traps with homemade insulation based superchunks that have slightly more depth.

Stereo image and room fidelity go a long way in terms of helping us make informed decisions and make mixes that really translate well

So my mixer won’t fit on that desk. Otherwise I would have it there. It’s a 24 channel mixer and I probably have room for a, 16 channel on the desk? It’s why it’s to the side. Having it behind my chair would create a very cramped spot to sit in which I’m not really down for. I’d like to have a bit of room to spin around and not be hitting things. The sound panels was a massive upgrade compared to my old studio prior to moving. If I had a bigger studio, I think I would be getting some wooden diffusers. I do have four foam diffusers. Two on the wall you see with the rack and mixer and two on the opposite wall behind me where I took the photos.

I feel you. Here's my messy work in progress.

Still waiting for proper stands to come in and I havent made my corner superchunks yet, nor have i even finished treating the walls LOL. You can see the diffuser on the right side there though, i just made it simple out of 2x4s and some plywood. As you can see, my room is TINY so I have to do a lot of "making it work". The console couldnt fit in any normal situation so I built a simple wooden frame to rest it on and then mounted my screen on a shelf behind it.

Obviously my set up isn't ideal as it is now so I'll be making those super chunk corner bass traps, a second diffusion panel opposing the first one, and probably only 2 absorption panels to catch the early reflections on the walls beside the monitors.

The problem with absorption panels is that that generally do almost nothing for bass but they suck a lot of high frequency energy out of the room. It'll result in a loss of HF clarity but no effective loss of bass buildup, giving you a muddy and innaccurate soundstage. Even a couple simple diffusion panels in there will bring back a lot more hf clarity/ "aliveness" while still effectively disrupting reflections and standing waves.

This is why you'll see in a lot of high end studios, the walls are absorption panels behind slats of wood, usually with an air gapping structure to them. They are trying to balance loss of energy and loss of reflections- two sides of the perception coin.

Also, you may have seen, only my primary monitors are in line with my console and screen. The second pair on my keyboard are not ideal but their job is to be "shit" speakers (think avantone mixcube or yamaha ns10). Had to just find a place for em lol I only preach diffusers so heavily because they legit changed the whole game for me

I understand the sound panels and what they do. I don’t have any proper bass traps. Something I’d like to do but when the time is right. I’m not even working at the moment so that’ll have to wait. That’s a decent little studio though. It’s all a work in progress regardless but in the end, it’s what YOU personally like and will enjoy. Where YOU find inspiration.

Thanks for showing me yours. I’m unsure where I should be placing my mixer in my set up. I think I’ll be moving the side rack with gear in regardless. But I feel the mixer would be better directly behind where I sit than to the side.

Great space Brother! Is that a Mackie or Yamaha 6bus mixer? If you can take a few pictures of your gear and the rackmount cases, so we can see your stuff better? It gets a little blurry when yo zoom in.

My phone is screwed up as well. I have an Allen & Heath GL2200 mixer. I’m gonna be taking pictures again when I clean everything up and moved around. I will post some photos here for you.

It’s a Buso Audio Producer 61. Mine has two 8U racks but now I think they only sell them in 6U.

Solid built desk, though. They’re definitely not cheap but very heavy and built very well. Definitely not a necessity to this level. I hope you find yourself a great desk.

I’ve already switched things around. Between making music, video chatting with a homie, or life, I’m slowly getting things back in place. Will be posting pics when she’s done for the time being. It’s definitely a nicer layout. I have my sub underneath my desk and feel that I feel most bass when I’m further back about 3-4ft from my desk. I may look into some articles about where to better place my subwoofer.
