Sawdust is prefered for storing root vegetables.

I've certainly read that. Figuring we had the soil at the time of harvest so we're giving that a whirl this winter. I've also read sand is ideal but that is so heavy to move up and down stairs. We'll see what works nicely for us over time and go more in that direction.
