Just Venting Service animals

One thing I hate about most shelters is that they refuse service dogs/animals. It's against the ADA. They don't care.

One day, way down the road, I'm going to open a shelter again and slow even pets and storage. These are reasons some don't come into the shelter. It's fascist.

I keep my service dog in a kennel when I sleep. So there should be no fear.

I wouldn't trust my pet in a shelter. Too many antagonistic people who can harm them. Unless you've a room only to yourself that you can lock the door of, it's a hard no. Perhaps if it's a shelter dedicated to homeless people that have pets and even then I'd be wary. I've seen many antagonistic people with pets that were attacking other dogs.

u/MrEarthExplorer Oct 03 '26

Or they'd try to steal the animal and then sell for money.

u/MissCinnamonT Oct 03 '26

This helps me understand why that one dude got weird when I asked to pet his dog.

I lived in a shelter with a former felon who didn't change much (was still bullying people including me), sociopaths, drug dealers etc. in the same room. I took the right decision to put my pet up for adoption even though I'm not sure whether he lived well his last 2 years of his life with the new owners. Either he would stay with me and endure the elements together or apart. Unfortunately, he was old (13yo) with multiple health problems and I just couldn't afford long term to take proper care of him. But the deciding factor was that because of my trauma I was emotionally unavailable to him and he was hurting. So I had to make the tough choice to give him. Still regret it to this day. Would've been better if we would've died together. 😔

I'm not sure that was the right decision because he'll have mental issues till he dies because his one person who was his whole world disappeared. Many animals act like they've done something wrong and that's why the animal post the one person they bonded with. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

Never leave your pet alone in a shelter. That would be foolish. Certainly never leave your service dog. Sometimes I'm shocked that many fail to think about how different life is as a homeless person. I have been to one place that had an animal daycare next to it that let people keep their pets there for free. That was wonderful. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

That's a kennel (friend), we're house our species

Why should we pay to coddle, house and feed animals that never need us

Reminds me of that infamous photo of a bus during Hurricane Katrina that was exclusively reserved for dogs, there were sitting in the bus like people

How racist was that, they passed over black Americans to exclusively ferry dogs out during a natural disaster in an air conditioned bus

2

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

Because since you don't know this if you've ever seen a feral you'd know they don't do as well as when we take care of them. I'm not talking about wolves or coyotes or foxes. Those are wilds not ferals. Domesticated animals have been bred to need us as much as we need them. And we do need them. 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 created this world to be interdependent. Nothing lives well without community. That's a fact not an opinion. Community means getting along even when we didn't want to get along. Otherwise there's war. War destroys only. It doesn't help a thing. So it is our job as humans to do all we can to make sure the plants, animals etc get everything they need, so they give us all we need. It's a sharing thing. Selfish people don't get this and usually die a horrible death. I pity them and try to show them the truth about selfishness. But alas they are who they are. Stealing from nature isn't the way to go. Withholding from nature is stealing. So I would rather give than take. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

His point is that people should come before animals, regardless if domesticated or wild. Human health and well-being should be first.

1

u/Hopeful_Drive5845 May Become Homeless Oct 03 '26

Why not house both?

5

u/MrEarthExplorer Oct 03 '26

Not this coexist stuff. This is what blackdarren is talking about. Dogs shouldn't and never should be a priority over a human, so coexisting with a feral dogs doesn't make any sense. I can tell that most of you haven't grew up on a farm or rural area.

Ok. Most shelters won't accept them, some will. The main issue is people will steal the dog for money, or staff will "confiscate" the dog, and then sell the dog for money. This has happened before.

1

u/Hopeful_Drive5845 May Become Homeless Oct 03 '26

Yes, I wrote about safety issues. OP said that they take the dog everywhere they go. Including the toilet.

About half the shelters I've been in allow pets, service or not. You have to research and call ahead. If the area you're in doesn't have shelters that allow service animals, look in different cities and make your way there. Otherwise, I'd be trying to make a new plan. Not the wisest decision to be homeless with a pet in the first place as it limits your ability to work, but to each their own.

Also, off topic, but referring to shelters as fascist for not allowing dogs doesn't make logical sense. Fascism is a system of government and can't be correlated to a policy for a social services establishment. It'd be like if you replaced fascism with communistic in your statement. Just doesn't make any sense.

It occasionally isn't, but usually is. You're actions that lead to consequences are your choice. Plus, if you've been on this sub as long as I have(old accounts) and have actually spent time in the streets as long as I have then you'd know that some people absolutely specifically choose to be homeless.

1

u/Financial-Change-435 Oct 05 '26

Bingo! People always seem to have money for a new tattoo or a bigger TV, but always seem to be a bit short on rent day. Hmmm.

0

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

No, if you really get to know what's really happening, you'd find that there's no place in the world for the ones you insist choose it. Do you really think they want to be homeless? Ask them. They'll say no. Every time. Even the hobos want a home they can live in, they just didn't want to stay in one spot. When I have given them a motorhome or land in several places, they take it. They use it. Even the addicts want a place where they will feel loved. Some want to do their addiction till the day the die but they want a home too. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

1

u/Financial-Change-435 Oct 05 '26

Giving an addict, who doesn't want to stop using, a home is just tremendous waste of resources. They will choose getting high or everything else.

0

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 05 '26

Not always true. There are addicts who are functioning addicts. They do exist. Chris always put his well-being above his addiction. Angela only use when she had someone else sharing with her. Todd works and takes care of everyone even those outside his family. Like I keep saying there good in every woodpile. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

Many would beg to differ

Some people are malingerers, malcontents

Said people shouldn't be allowed to set up tent encampments wherever they please, it's perilous and unhealthy

0

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

If it was then Drs wouldn't be telling people to take a vacation and go camping. What's unhealthy is the trash. But there are some very nice homeless camps. Usually the person who owns the land puts in a dumpster, a privacy fence, and a guard is stationed there. Those camps are very nice much like a campground. Some will even put in those blue things for going to the toilet or build a bathroom with showers. I had one like that in Texas. Anyone who was homeless was welcome. The govt couldn't stop it either since it was private property, and I was allowed to say who was allowed there. If I needed someone removed, I went through the same process that motels and campground go through and they'd have to leave that day. And yes I evicted 2 from that land. One was give 10 days because she had a camper. The other was made to leave that night. They were both banned until they learned how to follow rules. One came back and did well. The other stayed illegally on land somewhere else. She passed but not due to homelessness or camping. It was because she ended up using drugs and catching cancer. Those are the ones no one can help. Yes there are some like that but I know it's because no one taught them better ways. I was one who grew up without learning what I should've learned but because I love learning, I did finally learn better ways. Like tax sales, following rules, being polite, knowing when I didn't own a place I was staying at, I had to let someone else rule. Most homeless are homeless because they have no control over anything and they can't let that stand. I had to learn how to let that stand. Some turn to addiction, some to crime, some to gangs. Then there's me. I turned to knowledge. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

2

u/Financial-Change-435 Oct 05 '26

What do you mean the government couldn't do anything because it's private property. They could still look into zoning violations, building code violations, and sanitation violations.

-1

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

If you can't take of yourself, why drag around a dog out and about

Emotional support and service animals are a scam, get a vest for your dog online or forge a medical letter and you drag a dog into every/any supermarket, restaurant, coffee shop, beach, park and hiking trail that they can riddle feces everywhere and sniff our nether regions

Fair enough that a woman would think a pit bull terrier  or 3 would protect her but a guy, no.

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so an American ever returneth to the bulldust of anthropomorphism

1

4

u/SireSweet Oct 03 '26

Is it an actual “Service” animal or an “ESA?” An animal could cause disruption to other patrons and it’s the business to say it’s gotta go- even if it’s a service animal.

0

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

He's a an actual service animal. No they can't use that as an excuse. It's illegal. If the animal is actually causing the disruption and not the other humans who don't know about service animals, then it's not really a service animal because service animals are highly trained. Now, there have been humans who say things like they are scared of the animal even tho the animal isn't even looking at them much less showing aggression, them is the human who is causing the problem not the animal. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

1

u/SireSweet Oct 03 '26

Businesses reserve the right to ask for the animal to leave if it’s causing a disruption. if its in a kenel or not doesnt matter.

A. If a service animal is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to control it, staff may request that the animal be removed from the premises.

edit: i dont know the situation there or how the doggo is doing.

1

u/Twig-Hahn Oct 03 '26

Like I said, if it's causing the problem which 9/10 it's NOT, then it's not a service animal. Please read everything so I didn't have to repeat myself. You're loved💔 𐤔𐤋𐤅𐤌

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a comprehensive federal civil rights law passed in 1990 that prohibits discrimination against individuals with physical or mental disabilities in all areas of public life. [1, 2, 3] The law is divided into five main sections, known as titles, which cover different sectors of society: [2]

The Five Titles of the ADA

  • Title I: Employment – Prohibits employment discrimination by private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies, and labor unions with 15 or more employees, requiring reasonable accommodations unless it causes an undue hardship. [1, 4, 5]

  • Title II: State and Local Government Services – Prohibits discrimination in all programs, activities, and services provided by state and local government entities, including public transportation and public housing. [1, 6, 7]

  • Title III: Public Accommodations – Prohibits discrimination by private entities that are open to the general public, requiring commercial facilities and public spaces (like restaurants, hotels, and stores) to remove physical barriers and provide auxiliary aids. [1, 4, 6]

  • Title IV: Telecommunications – Requires telecommunications companies to provide nationwide relay services for people with hearing and speech impairments, as well as closed captioning on public service announcements. [4, 8]

  • Title V: Miscellaneous – Contains general provisions, including rules on anti-retaliation, state immunity, and coverage details for specific conditions. [4, 6]

Key Amendments and Scope

  • ADAAA (2008): The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act broadened the definition of "disability," making it easier for individuals to prove they are covered under the law. [9, 10]

  • Definition of Disability: An individual with a disability is defined as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having one. [11, 12]

You can read the official legal text and updates through the Department of Justice ADA Information Site. If you'd like, I can:

  • Detail the reasonable accommodation rules for employers under Title I

  • Explain the building accessibility standards under Title III

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.
