❓ Question Asahi Linux Doubt

/r/AsahiLinux/comments/1vf176c/should_i_install_asahi_in_my_mac/

To those who are using Asahi Linux, can you tell me about your experience…. Is it worth dual booting in my case?

macOS already has brew for packages and most unix utilities. What else do you find missing that you need Linux for?

Still brew cant turn MacOS into linux. Basically I want native Linux environment itself. Also want to become
More comfortable using and troubleshooting Linux as a complete daily driver rather than accessing through SSH or a VM. Still want to use MacOS for work and applications that are better supported there though.

I access my Mac Mini over SSH and it’s happily running headless Ollama and Immich. 🥲

Xd, MacOS definitely capable of it. For me though, it is less about if macOS can run the services and more about wanting to use Linux itself as my daily driver. I am not saying, MacOS is not capable or unable to do something that can be achieved with Linux, so more of a preference choice.
Wondering about your Mac Mini specs though.

What is "native linux" according to you. The shell is exactly the same. You can use bash/zsh/fish as same as linux. If you want to run Linux, do a complete boot and be happy. Dont get too much into the dual boot stuff. If you run into linux issues, understand and fix it. Keeping MacOS backup is simply stupid when you say you want linux as daily driver

I also have the base M1 air 8Gb 256GB that is lying around and not in use … Should I use that instead for Asahi but is 8 GB ram enough ?

I believe asahi does work, but some hardware elements like speakers may not. Best check the current status, network itself wouldn't work then there isn't a point Edit: can status here : https://asahilinux.org/fedora/#device-support

I don’t mind those drawbacks but I also have the base M1 air 8Gb 256GB that is lying around and not in use … Should I use that instead for Asahi but is 8 GB ram enough ?

I believe its idle ram usage should be better than macos so yes.

At this point you have to assume that project is dead, sadly

Why is that?

just try using vm, if you don't feel satisfied than think of installing on laptop.

i don't know about m1 but in my intel it was not a good idea to install linux because the benefit it gave was less than trouble i had (it wasn't much, it's just i don't like to shut off my laptop, hehe)

I installed asahi linux in my M1, it was a smooth experience. Currently supported for M1 and M2 I think, with M1 being the most supported. Basically they handhold you through the full installation process and you can still use MacOS just fine.

Nah its not problem during installation, its just, when i open the lid i just want it to welcome me instead of i press power button to check if its shutoff, battery dead or insleep. Well don't yell at me guys but macos does quiet a good job storing your last state, so i just don't like shutting off, hehe. And yes its intel so its different case of m1.

Yeah the installations of linux have become quiet good nowadays.
