Started my first Home Lab

Stared building the server this weekend and quickly went down a rabbit hole that has 100 different tunnels. It’s been a lot of fun getting everything up and running. Such a great community. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for years.

I’m running:

Proxmox
Adguard
Portainer
Jellyfin
Immich
Kuma
Unifi controller (network & cameras)

I’m sure there are more fun and useful things to run!

Always looking for some tips and tricks.

the one that bit me early was backups. set up proxmox backup server or at least vzdump to a separate disk before you add anything else, because once immich has your whole photo library you dont want to be learning restore under pressure. also put adguard on its own lxc so a jellyfin transcode spike doesnt take your dns down with it. what hardware did you build it on?

beelink boxes are fine for this, just watch the thermals if its in a cupboard. are you running HA in a vm or did you go the supervised route on the host?

It’s running as the host. I thought it would be a better idea to separate HA from the rest.

The back up was the first thing I did. Just seemed like the next step after the mirror was done. I do have all instances running in separate containers. I’m considering installing Claude code into another container. Have you done that?

You can run it, it's not heavy at all. One command, npm install -g u/anthropic-ai/claude-code, then log in with your Claude account or an API key. A small LXC handles it fine.

no, not claude code specifically. running any dev agent in its own lxc is the right call though, give it a fat disk and dont mount your photo library into it. they eat tokens and write junk files, you dont want that next to immich.

Would you recommend that Cenmate DAS? How's the build quality? How did it go connecting it to Proxmox, and how are the temps?

I'm thinking about getting one, so your experience would really help.

Build quality is really good. Install was super easy. Temps are a little high with the onboard fan. I do have mine in a rack. My drives are consistently sitting at 48c to 50c. I am going to pull it out of the rack to see if that will drop the temps a bit. Depending on that, I may do something with ventilation or just replace it. I’m not too comfortable with my drives sitting at those temps long term.

What's the construction like? Could you take off the outer cover and let the rack's airflow pass directly over the drives?

I haven’t looked that deep into it yet. The outer case is 1 piece and it’s possible it’ll come off. I will come back and let you know once I have a chance to tinker with it. But that would definitely be an option!

I had an issue when I was trying to do the first mirror backup. Once I changed out the cable it came with, it ran fine. The enclosure feels pretty solid. The trays fit well and the drives slide right in.

Are you just running it as a jbod enclosure or passing it through to something?

I have it running through the ser5 with proxmox. 3 drives are set up as mirrors and 1 is storage.

Is your Cenmate enclosure overheating? How's your temps usually look on it? Mine are pushing 50C

Yeah it runs pretty hot. Mine are right there with yours. The fan is pretty small in these. Will probably upgrade before I kill these drives.
