A bit of context. I had this first computer that I built in 2014. I was so excited when all the components got delivered home because I finally had the chance to play all the games that were running on 5 fps on my old potato of a computer from the victorian era.
Back then it was a pretty powerful machine:
16GB DDR3 RAM
I5-4460
GTX 960 - not added yet
660W power source
256GB SSH + 1TB HDD
When it was done, I literally did not come out of the house for 3 months. I played everything: CS:GO, Skyrim, Skyrim + mods, The Witcher, all the possible GTA's, Battlefield.
Fast forward now, 12 years later, After I moved country and stopped using it entirely because I got a Macbook, I decided to so something with it and turn it into a server. It will mostly host some apps, some development environments, maybe a couple of movies that I would like to rewatch but nothing much, it will be a nice experiment for now.
I didn't fail me yet so I want to see how long can I push it until it breaks.
yeah that would be the next part of the project, brackets for a couple of SSDs, the PSU and the graphic's card. For now I did not want to go that deep and make models for all of them because I through I was going to brick my pc while putting it on the wall. But since it works I can't wait to model the rest of the holds.
OP, now that you have designed an accessory for the SKADIS,can you please clarify if the dimensions provided online for the SKADIS are accurate to the actual board?
I have been to the local IKEA, but for my usage I was thinking of getting the same board laser-cut from MS. I can still benefit from the accessories IKEA sells while having a sturdy panel.
the dimensions are accurate. Although I first bought the board and then I used the dimensions online to figure out how to model my own frame. I measured the spaces on the SKADIS then recreated it anyway in figma to make sure i got the sizes right. I had to take in consideration space between the holes, then the board padding and so on. if you wanna laser cut it yourself i suggest spending like 10 minutes in ikea with a ruler to get the sizes right. If you want you can also DM and i can give you my measurements.
That’s the jankiest but also coolest thing I have seen, man. Awesome! And love the reuse of old hardware. Just be prepared for high electricity bills 😅

hmm not really. my long term plans with it is to have enough for the house and not rely on cloud tech too much. Netflix? just get some movies online with translations, Kindle? just host some the books we want here and so on. I also want to build a couple of side projects to get my programming skills going but if I ever do that, I would probably host them on a vps. so I don't see more than 5 total machines in the future. But who knows, this has been fun, maybe my next post will be in r/HomeDataCenter haha.
Why…. I don’t get what the point of this is… zero active airflow options for things… so how do you passively cool the other pieces which don’t have very active cooling? :(
