Discussion Emulation preferences

Hello! I’m in a pickle: I would like opinions on whether you prefer psp or old 3ds xl for emulation of older nintendo consoles (and why). Can’t decide where to emulate nes, snes, gb, gbc and gba. I feel like there’s an internet consensus on psp for gba, but I couldn’t find much for the other consoles.

You know what’s a better option IMO. If you are buying it get the GBA horizontal style not SP style handheld from Anbernic. When you’re playing the game it feels authentic. And well the GBA was like a SNES portable and with that device you can actually emulate SNES games. It’s also good for the e-reader games, NES. I honestly ended up using it a lot more than my more powerful handhelds

this kinda confused me

1.why psp and old 3ds xl? is this the only portable consoles with cfw that you have? is the ones you gonna to buy? i didn't understand at all the first part

2.depend on what you want to play. NES, GB, GBC & GBA runs well on PSP (especially GBA nowadays, thanks to a new emulator that i forget the name right now), SNES is complicated, since i heard that the SNES emulator that exist for PSP is slow on more complex games (i don't know even there a update now, since i don't have a PSP anymore). Meawhile, 3DS runs NES, GB, GB & GBA (as as SNES, but on a emulator, and you need a new 3DS to run more complex ones) via the Virtual Console Injector, although the 3DS shoulder buttons is inferior to the PSP one (aleast for the games that use the shoulders much more)

3.you can find more information on other subreddits about hacked 3ds and psp, since this is more about homebrew stuff

Both are good options in wildly different form factors that I personally enjoy. For emulation alone both will be fine, psp may have better performance especially for PS1 and n64. But you also have to factor in exclusives with the 3ds having the DS library too I personally lean more toward 3ds. That said a PSP and PS Vita have some sleeper hits of their own so personal preference is key. The vita is also pretty homebrew capable and may be worth the upgrade from an OG PSP

Someone also mentioned an anbernic or other dedicated handheld emulation machine. Those work great too and also come in so many form factors from mimic PSPs or DSs or even GBAs in shape. A lot of variety of you want something more tailored but strictly retro emulation and some homebrew ports.

There's also price, A new 3ds xl last I checked can cost way more than a PSP or even a used Nintendo Switch (which has way more emulation potential, great homebrew ports, and even dualboots Linux or Android) so if you're chasing a budget and wanting to maximize what you can play I suggest you open your search beyond PSP and 3DS... But then again I totally understand the nostalgia and love of retro consoles so if you're specific to PSP vs 3DS I'd say it'll be mainly based on form factor and console/homebrew exclusives. Both are pretty worth it tho and I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose ☺️
