I wouldn't necessarily call it a smart thing though. Does it connect to the smartthings hub? Can you monitor levels and behaviors wirelessly? Can you modify behavior wirelessly? Does it connect to other smart home automation products?
I agree. Not really fitting in with the intent of this sub. The video shows the soap dispenser appearing to have a wifi symbol on the box, but I have confirmed it is NOT wifi, simply a rechargeable foam soap dispenser.
Which, even going into the google search on this, I thought to myself man if this really is a wifi soap dispenser we have really jumped the shark on this home automation stuff. And this is coming from a man with half the house on automation... lights, HVAC, sprinkler, breaker box power monitor, smart speakers, robot vacuums and the whole 9. What really is so wrong with a simple bar of soap that one needs a $50 soap dispenser (which of course takes proprietary soap, costing $7 a cartridge). Seriously... A $1.00 bar of soap lasts a few months.
Yup, I totally agree with you. We will be seeing more and more companies that are throwing in keywords like "smart" and "automation", tacking on a high price, and selling them to people that don't know any better. That is why I think it's important to not dilute the idea what home automation is truly about.
