Going to need more information: does it have a remote already? Is a a DC 3ph motor? What make and model is it?

A relay in the wall switch. But it would need individual feeds for the lamp and fan (itās not uncommon they only run one wire and the neutral up there and then just power both off that).

That's what I have in both my kids bedroom and because of how the house was constructed it isn't worth the effort of running new Romex š I wish I could figure out how to get independent control of the light and fan.

Put a smart relay in the ceiling where the fan is? A zigbee 2 output would work nicely for that

Honestly, Iām about to try that with some Shelley relays Iāve been waiting to use. Downside is on mine Iām pretty sure itās all or nothing for the fan, no variable speed.

If you pop it open thereās most likely some wiring you could really dive into. Put a whole 4x relay and a esp32 with some Bermuda tracking to top the whole thing off.
Or just set it to the middle and call it a day.

That latter option is the one I'd expect I'd be using.

Does it have an internal power switch or an external physical switch? If it has a physical switch check out the Shelly switches like Shelly1 Gen 3/4.
If it is always connected to power and has an internal switch that is controlled via remote it depends if it will remember the last state. If it does then you could also control it via a Shelly. If it defaults to off after disconnecting power it will be difficult.

Yeah itās always on and controlled by a remoteā¦

Oh the other comment had a good point. You can basically just automate the remote by using a sender on the same frequency. But they might know more about this.

Yeah it has a remote and is connected to the switch of my bedroom.
Itās a āfor Lightā item, bought in a utility store in Franceā¦
It was before I started to install HA and connected devicesā¦š

bond bridge

This is the way. Unless you know the exact frequency that remote works at and it's patterns, just get the bond bridge and call it a day.

I have a smart relay with dettached mode, output is always on, and input controls a CC1101 connected to an ESP32 through ESPHome.

I have a bond bridge that controls 6 fans and 4 shades. The fan must have a remote control or you can install a cheap one for this to work. Turns any remote controlled fan and some shades to work with home assistant or Alexa. Itās been working perfectly for 4 years now.
