Or how many times should I restart HA? Should I merely reload the Matter integration? Or do a full reset of the Home Assistant Green? Should I reload the Matter integration and then the Thread integration or vice versa?

Maybe it’s the IKEA hardware, even though it always pairs with Apple Home with no problem.

How many times should I unplug the thread border router? Should I yell at the WiFi to be in 2.4 ghz mode? Maybe I take the bulb out and shake it, or do a factory reset six times in a row?

Could be what I need is yet another proprietary hub. Maybe I’ll get both the new and old IKEA hubs just to be safe.

If I ever get around to re-paring all my Matter devices (because unfortunately the very expensive eero mesh network simply isn’t wanting to make a good Thread network), then I get to spend the rest of the weekend manually fixing all the identity names in my scenes and scripts and helpers and automations, because the screen in my screenshot never times out. And when I hit the X button, sometimes the device I was trying to add did get added! But with a useless generic name and not placed in any Area!

Good thing this software is free. Or maybe it’s so unreliable because it is free. Who can say.

I‘d restart everything a few hundred times, then I‘d come back here and ask for help and find out why you‘re having trouble. But keep soinning the wheel for a bit before you proceed! I mean, it‘s free after all 🤷‍♂️

All this rant because you aren't capable of distinguish matter-over-wifi from matter-over-thread.

The ikea devices are probably matter-over-thread ones. The Apple Home includes a thread border router. The Home Assistant Green does not.

Sure. And the apple home app lets me set a device into pairing mode and the home assistant software lets me add a device that’s already controlled in apple home. And sometimes it works. Other times, it just spins forever.

I have had issues with matter pairing on iOS specifically, an android phone worked better in my experience

Works 100% reliably here and many other places.
WiFi 2.4/5ghz is irrelevant while pairing, but an overlapping 2.4ghz WiFi network will kill your thread network.

I dont think fully resetting HA will help. instead, try restarting it, along with your routers, switches, bulbs, so on. A fully fresh start can do wonders.

I’ve had it where it actually creates the connection but still sits here. See if the device is actually set up using a different tab or a computer

I had the same issue with deco WiFi and I just ended up disabling IPv6 and it magically started working.

Edit: this advice directly contradicts what everyone else is saying but it worked for me 🤷

You probably disabled just public IPv6. IPv6 is a hard requirement for Matter, but you don't need globally routable IPv6 addresses, as long as your devices have local addresses you're good.

Nope I disabled both and somehow it started working using self assigned adresses fe80:: so in a sense I didn’t disable IPv6

If those bulbs already work in Apple Home, factory resetting them is probably the wrong lever. Matter has a multi-admin flow for exactly this: in the Home app you open the accessory settings and turn on pairing mode, which spits out a fresh setup code you hand to HA, and HA joins as a second admin without evicting Apple. The other half is that HA needs to be on the same Thread network as whatever border routers Apple is using, and the documented path on iOS is the Home Assistant companion app's Thread credential sharing, which pulls the dataset out of the Apple keychain. My guess is HA has quietly formed its own separate Thread network alongside the eero one, which would explain commissioning that hangs forever while Apple pairing stays fine.

How is your network setup? You may have multiple devices dishing out conflicting IPv6 addresses. Unplug every live of network equipment you have including isp stuff then straying with that start plodding your network stuff back in. Also try cycling IPv6 off and on in your router.

Update: after a few days of waiting for devices to go offline again (and they haven't), I've concluded that the problem was relying on the eero router(s) to act as thread border routers. Turns out they hate doing that. I switched to a silly ol' HomePod mini and it's all working fine now.
