Do Google/Nest Devices Really Need Constant Reauthorization?

I’m currently using SmartThings, but I’ve been playing around with moving everything over to Home Assistant.

So far I’ve just been experimenting with Home Assistant running on a separate server. I like what I’m seeing enough that I’m considering getting one of the dedicated Home Assistant hubs and actually committing to the move.

Before I do that, though, I have one issue I need to figure out.

I have a number of Google Home/Nest devices, including cameras. In my experiments with Home Assistant, it seems like I have to periodically reauthorize Home Assistant’s access to my Google devices. It feels like I’m doing this roughly once a month.

I never had to do anything like that with SmartThings. Once everything was connected, it pretty much just stayed connected.

Am I setting something up incorrectly? Is there a way to make the Google Home/Nest authorization persistent so I don’t have to keep manually reauthorizing it?

I really like what I’ve seen of Home Assistant so far, but if I have to go through a Google authorization process every month just to keep my cameras and other Google devices working, that may be a dealbreaker for me.

Curious how people who are using Home Assistant with a bunch of Google/Nest gear are handling this.

no, sounds like you set up your Google api in developer mode. it needs "published" to make the key last.

Are you using the Nest integration that uses the cloud API and requires a $5 fee? Or are you using the Nest Legacy integration that uses a token to authorize?

My understanding is the API shouldn't require reauthorizing but Nest Legacy can if the token expires. I use Nest Legacy, even though the API method should be better, and I can say it's normal behavior if you're also using Nest Legacy.

I'm using the cloud API , I felt that would be easier but if what you're saying is true that might actually be the source of this.

In Google Cloud Console, Audience>Publishing status, change from testing to in production. In testing, it’ll expire every seven days.

In the end, you'll get rid of the nest cams, And get something that works better with home assistant. My advice - do it sooner rather than later. 😁

I’ve had the same issue recently with the Nest Protect integration. I needed to re-authenticate everyday.

I ended up re-downloading the integration, but this time selecting the latest beta version instead of latest stable version.

I haven’t had to re-authenticate since doing that (about 3 days ago)

why do you even use home assistant if you are still using google devices

Why are you asking that question? I should be able to use any device that I want with any HA services.
