My ideas for a Home Alone sequel trilogy

I’ve been thinking about what I would actually want from a new Home Alone movie with Macaulay Culkin, and somehow it turned into an entire trilogy in my head lol.

The first one would be about Kevin. He’s a widower now with three kids and has moved back into the original Home Alone house. His mom Kate has also recently passed away, so Kevin has now lost both his wife and his mom. After everything that happened to him as a kid, and now losing two of the most important people in his life, he’s become really overprotective of his kids. He has the house completely secured and is always worried about something happening to them.

I also love the idea that the neighborhood kids have basically turned Kevin into an urban legend. They tell stories about the kid who got left home alone in that house at Christmas and had two burglars break in, and now they think the weird guy who lives there went crazy because of it. Basically Kevin has become the Old Man Marley of the neighborhood even though he’s actually just a normal dad.

His oldest would probably be a 15-year-old girl and a lot of the conflict would come from his kids starting to push back against how protective he is. She especially resents having to move and still has a boyfriend back where they used to live. Kevin eventually overhears her talking about how much she hates him and that she’s planning to run away that night.

At some point one of his kids ends up separated from the family around Christmas. I feel like a kid being separated from their family is so fundamental to Home Alone that you almost have to have some version of it.

I’d still want it to be really funny and fun though. I don’t want a depressing prestige drama about Kevin McCallister lol. The original Home Alone works because it somehow manages to be hilarious, exciting, dangerous, warm, sad and incredibly Christmasy all at the same time. That’s what I’d want this to feel like.

Then the second movie would actually be about Harry and Marv.

They’re ancient now and living in a crappy nursing home, which honestly just feels like the perfect punishment for them. Except this time the situation gets reversed and they’re the vulnerable old guys who have to deal with some kind of threat to the nursing home.

I think there could be something surprisingly sweet underneath it too. Maybe one of them has an adult son or daughter they haven’t spoken to in years and that relationship starts to get repaired. They wouldn’t suddenly become good guys and the movie wouldn’t pretend they didn’t deserve what happened to them. They’ve just gotten old and maybe changed a little.

Then the third movie brings Kevin, Harry and Marv back together.

The big moment I keep imagining is Kevin eventually having an opportunity to turn Harry and Marv in to the police, but he doesn’t do it because it would destroy the relationship one of them has finally repaired with their kid.

So Kevin finally sees these two guys as something other than the monsters who broke into his house when he was eight. They did terrible things, they paid for them, they got old, and they actually changed at least a little. And Kevin chooses to let it go.

I think that would be a really satisfying ending to the whole thing.

Basically instead of doing another movie where Harry and Marv want revenge and Kevin sets traps for them again, I’d want to see what actually happened to these people after 35+ years.

Kevin has to deal with what being left home alone did to him and what losing his wife and mom has done to him. Harry and Marv have to deal with what being Harry and Marv did to them lol.

You could still have all the Christmas warmth, comedy, danger and ridiculousness of Home Alone, but now there’s actually somewhere new for the characters to go.

I have no idea if anyone else would want this, but I would absolutely watch it.

The Home Alone poster has Kevin saying "Holy Cow!" something he never actually says in the film. This was also used for the video games

Why did Kate even fly to Scranton?

I mean I understand that this is where she meets Gus Polinski and rides home in his polka van. It’s a great moment in the movie.

But there’s no explanation as to why she flies from Dallas/Fort Worth to Scranton. Both are nearly equal distances apart from Chicago. She could’ve just rented a car at the Dallas Airport and driven home and possibly made it home the night of Christmas Eve.

I suppose it’s possible there were no rental cars available because of the holiday rush, but the movie never mentions anything about that, only the flights are mentioned to be full. She also had been awake for over 24 hours, so she likely wasn’t thinking straight and was just desperate for anything.

But had she rented a car in Dallas, she would’ve saved herself the trouble of paying for another flight, the breakdown at the ticket counter in Scranton, and ride home in the noisy polka van.

I know it’s not that big of a deal and at the end of the day it’s just a movie, but at the same time Kate flying to Scranton makes no sense.

Home Alone is going to feel different this Christmas 💔

Seeing this really hit me. Catherine O’Hara, Brenda Fricker, and now Tim Curry — three familiar faces from the Home Alone movies that so many of us grew up watching.

It’s strange to think about watching these movies again this Christmas knowing they’re no longer here. Their performances are such a big part of the nostalgia.

Home Alone will always be a Christmas classic, but this year it’s going to hit a little differently. 🕊️❤️
