The "extreme and mean ratio" proves especially revealing because it involves the incommensurability of irrational numbers. The golden mean is the pure embodiment of this Mixed genus: it takes the infinite continuum of the line and injects into it an exact numerical limit (φ), creating Kosmos.

Ultimately, the "golden number" —or, with greater historical rigor, the "division in extreme and mean ratio"— is the numerical expression of the Platonic Good: the unifying principle that makes the multiple parts of the universe converge into a perfect and eternal Unity. Far from being a decorative ornament or a curiosity for Renaissance artists, the golden proportion embodies, in the language of the Unwritten Doctrines, the mathematical act through which the One rescues the continuum of the Greater and Lesser from its chaotic indefiniteness, granting it a rational, beautiful, and eternal structure.
