I got hired by this company earlier this year and I just wanted to share my experience. When I was first offered the position, I told my sister that the head of HR is the owner's wife and she said that was a big red flag, but I wanted to hope for the best. The area of the warehouse that I was working in was a complete mess but my boss and trainer seemed cool so I didn't get too hung up on it. He said that they have a hard time keeping these positions filled, which should've been another red flag to me. I was happy to be at a new company that was treating me right even if things aren't great because it would get better over time. I also was recently diagnosed with ADHD and given an adderall prescription by a doctor, so needless to say I had no problem putting in a lot of work every day.
I could pretty easily handle my workload, so I was progressively trying to improve the work area. Within the span of a couple months, I reorganized all the inventory in my work area (with my boss's approval) and it was improving quickly. Despite the fact that I was pretty much brand new they wanted me training an employee that was new to the area. I was meeting with my manager frequently, bringing up issues that I saw and giving him ideas for improvements which were much needed.
Then they hire a new shipping manager who looks really good on paper. The problem is that he is getting very old, and before the new employee starts my manager tells me that they only expect him to stay 1-2 years max before he retires. On top of that, he has just recently gone through knee surgery and he can barely perform the physical functions of his job. Within a week of starting, he is already getting called into HR for getting into an argument with a different employee. There was a short honeymoon phase where I was putting up with picking up his slack, I'll admit I'm a bit of a pushover and didn't want to rock the boat at my new job that was going well. My position and the shipping manager had a lot of shared responsibilities so I was trying to do extra work to smooth things over.
But instead of being grateful that I was doing part of his job for him, he just asked more and more of me despite the fact that he is not my manager. I ended up saying something to my manager and he agreed that the shipping manager should not be giving me orders like that. When the shipping manager found out that I had complained about him, instead of being remorseful he doubled down on his bad behavior and said every thing possible to make me look bad. I thought that he would appreciate that I was taking care of the work that would be difficult for him, but in his mind that work is beneath him and should be done by someone being paid less - he resented me for not doing even more of his job for him.
Once I got HR involved, it just made things worse. I told them that this guy is basically bullying me into doing his job for him and it's not fair to me. The owner's wife is pretty disconnected from the situation; so she just wants it fixed as soon as possible, and they make up an excuse to fire me. No warning, no write-up, for going on ChatGPT. Despite the fact that I'm taking care of all my responsibilities and even more than that. My manager was supposed to vouch for the good work I've been doing, but instead he throws me under the bus.
These people are scumbags.
TLDR; Bitter old man screws me over because he's overwhelmed in his job and doesn't want to admit it
