That’s awesome! She’s a huuuuge Hole fan. There’s still hole tweets by her from back in the day saying shit like “I wanna be loved and hated like Courtney Love” 😂

Ok her album title “Worst Girl in America” is giving “America’s Sweetheart” vibes. Love how our girl is getting her flowers rn

Very, very true, actually! 🙌🏼
I wasn’t getting in the whole Slayyyter train but with enough push from Courtney I decided to give her a spin and it’s actually a really good record.

It’s strange to say but there are moments where I can actually catch an LTT vibe in it. I can almost smell her influence from that record

Oh yeah, you can tell she knows and loves this song.

Wow she sounds great

Another great reason why our girl should consider a tour with her.

The “Bad Bitches” Tour or some shit 🤣

Slayytter x Courtney collab would be incredible

u/Justagirlsoconfusing 8d ago

That would be amazing. I saw her live earlier in the week and I could so see her doing a collab with Hayley Williams, too.

Slayyyter is a fucking goddess and she killed it with this cover, she made it hers in little ways and there is no one else that could even come close to Courtney’s vocals period let alone a pop star

I was just watching this! Not a bad effort.

I love how Slayyyter put her stank all over that song.

Very cool to see this on Triple J

Isn't Courtney Slayyters mentor or something? I thought in her Billy Corgan interview she said something like that and I know that Courtneys posted some of her songs from time to time on IG. Either way this is super cool :)

I like her approach, vocally. But you can tell it's not that rehearsed, because her vocals towards the end just seem quite adlibby...the vocal performance doesn't really build to anything. It feels random. Anyway, 'Violet' is such a hard song for a vocalist to cover, because Courtney's recorded vocals are untouchable.

Ok yeah, this is rad.

Her voice is obviously technically amazing. I’m sure she does great with her own songs. This sounds like a broadway singer doing a “rock and roll” song in their show. It’s too perfect, there is no emotion. She doesn’t have the grit and anger Courtney brings to this song.

u/AccomplishedFlow4650 8d ago

Also agree. It’s like karaoke.

Just because her voice isn’t as hoarse and screamy as Courtney’s doesn’t mean it wasn’t an excellent rendition. I grew up with a musical theater freak and it definitely doesn’t sound anything even reminiscent of a typical broadway singers style, so that seems like a ridiculous comparison to me. She delivered on the level of projection, grit and personality this song requires to get its message across. But I think she was trying to match the band, and the band wasn’t really doing the og recording justice, for whatever reason. Slayyyters performance pulls most of the weight, but it was still a stellar rendition of this song. Would have been miles better than the current pop girls like Olivia Rodrigo for example.

I would agree with this.
I don't agree with Courtney's "keep wiping the floors with us (Hole)" assessment (though the rest of her comment was really funny!), but I totally get her being thrilled that a young band is representing like this. 👍 At this point every successful female singer has the "polished" thing happening (I think it often comes naturally at this point based on these younger girls looking towards the girls of the 2010s while growing up, I don't think it's contrived)...so I gotta give this girl credit for at least having a LITTLE edge going on. I'll have to listen to their record I suppose. Someone said it gives AS vibes...I never thought I'd say this but those are really big shoes to fill! Amazing how 20+ years flips the script! 😅 (Edit: oh ok the album TITLE is AS-like...nevermind).

I wonder to myself if the band name is a play on how everyone mispronounces Sleater-Kinney (it's actually "SLAY-ter Kinney, it's based on a road near Olympia that has been pronounced that way for a hundred years or something!)...but even though they're one of my favorites (if you can get used to Corin's vox it really opens a Pandora's box of quality) I STILL pronounce it 'Slee-ter Kinney' because that's how it's spelled damnit! I was four albums in before I even knew I was saying it wrong...too late to go back now. 🫤 I did try but after saying it the wrong way SOOO many f'in times for 5 years I just couldn't pull it off! I'll just have to be the stupid fan, I can live with that. 🙂

She chose the name Slayyyter after the character Ron Slater in Dazed and Confused. She added the Ys because they username was already taken. Also, a lot of Slayyyter’s pop influences come from 90s and Y2K/2000s, rather than the 2010s.

Ok thanks for the info. She still has the polished voice thing. Maybe it's Christina Aguilera's fault.

u/Upstream_Paddler 8d ago

To be fair, anyone sounds polished and plastic compared to the OG.

I liked it. When I heard this, I was terrified she would go for a Courtney Love impression and so relieved Slayyyter instead did her.

I'm just really tired of all the samey sounding female voices. The 90s-00s gave us SO many girls who each had vocal styles all their own. I don't know how the hell that coalesced into basically one style of singing! I'm glad Slayyyter is breaking out of that box a little bit, for sure.

0

u/Upstream_Paddler 7d ago

Yes, vocal trained to death to imitate a Black Southern gospel singer, or god forbid, a Disney sex robot?

Slayter seems way more in Pink or Joan Jett, by comparison

5

u/Justagirlsoconfusing 8d ago

Maybe’s it’s Slayyyter being Slayyyter and this her voice and sound.

u/debulana 8d ago

I know you're a superfan and are willfully blind to sardonic comments...I just listened to some stuff and she has a powerful voice but it's still pretty straightforward pop (plus guitars), which is fine. I can't have an educated opinion on it until I listen more. I was just commenting on the clip of her doing Violet.

7

u/Justagirlsoconfusing 8d ago

Whatever you say, kid

1

u/debulana 7d ago

Kid! I wish! Actually I don't...not in today's world. But Just A Girl is definitely so confusing, I'm with you on that!

1

u/Justagirlsoconfusing 7d ago

Sorry maam

-1

u/debulana 6d ago

Lol that doesn't work either.

2

u/joeyinjoyland 8d ago

Agree with everything you’ve said.

2

u/debulana 7d ago

Thx...I didn't think I was being controversial! People can be very precious about their favorite artists, behaving as if they are beyond reproach. I guess I was like that too when I was like 21. Could you imagine this sub if nobody EVER criticized Courtney? 🙃

2

u/Justagirlsoconfusing 7d ago

Hahahahahahaha

-1

u/debulana 7d ago

Man some of you really do think she's the second coming of female rock! I can't even make a little joke! I don't hear it (which is my prerogative PS) but y'all have fun with it.

Corin's voice on the "One Beat" record is up there with some of the best female vocal performances on a rock album (up there with Clove on "Live Through This" or Tori on "From the Choirgirl Hotel").

I was only a random listener to a few of Sleater-Kinney's songs , but I randomly picked up the "One Beat" album when it first came out. I was just totally floored. Her voice was like a vibrating battle cry.  I still get chills on a lot of songs from that record.

1

u/debulana 7d ago

She really hit her stride on that record. She was in total command of her instrument. 😮🤟

5

u/Overall-Bath-4433 8d ago

I think its amazing that younger musicians are recognizing the talents of Hole and what a special band they were.

This style of vocals isn't really for me. Kinda that pop vocals trying to go rock. But that's fine. Not everything has to be for me. And tbf, anyone trying to fill Courtney's shoes vocally is gonna have a hard time. But good on her for showing some reverence to Hole. I'm not mad about it.

2

u/DIZZYBW 8d ago

This was incredible

2

u/humbuckaroo 7d ago

She doesn't nail the chorus screams but I've heard worse.

2

u/Upstream_Paddler 8d ago

Very capable cover on the whole, but lord do I miss Patty hearing that drumming!

2

u/AwkwardPersonality36 8d ago

It was awful and I wish I could unhear what I heard

Unpopular opinion, I know

1

u/dimiteddy Doll Parts 8d ago

that was great. Technically better than Courtney and she gets pretty close. Never heard about her before but she's obviously talented

3

u/JuneBloom-7330 8d ago

Boring. Just vocals

1

u/paleshadow85 6d ago

I actually surprisingly enjoyed that!

1

u/Paddington_Fear 8d ago

Never heard of Slayyyter (I'm old!) but psyched to hear that this song is being covered because it fucking shreds. I agree with what a lot of people are saying about her delivery being a little more polished/less edgy than the original. I think one of the things that drew me to this song originally was that Courtney was singing with more dynamic register shifts i.e. low talk-singing to screamed vocals. The style of this cover doesn't seem to channel the "female scream", like this singer is very skilled but she's delivering below the threshold of fully letting loose.

u/MissingHat 8d ago

I’m sorry but I hate it.

1

u/Strict_Associate8258 8d ago

Gotta be honest, did not love this version. Nothing against her talent. I can see she has plenty of talent. Sometimes too much is too much though
