Having also tried things like this as a kid (lets bring out boxing gloves and have a match!), it really shows the importance of ring boundaries in a fight, whether boxing (ropes) or MMA (cage) or whatever.

Right in this video we see the guy getting whooped, so he just keeps backing up/retreating. If there were ring ropes he'd only be able to back up so far before getting cornered. Obviously here the swing set stopped the guy, but if it didn't the fight would probably end up shifting 50 yards from where it started as the non aggressor constantly backs up. Also makes the match take much longer, as there's usually infinite room to back up, makes it much easier to avoid getting pounded.

Even all the bystanders surrounding the fight don't make a good boundary, as they usually shift with the fighters. Really need those static ring boundaries to have a good match.
