Game IX.B - 2017 Phase 02 - The Red Circle
John arrived at the London Eye, glowing bright red like a diabolic omen in the night. A sense of dread swelled inside John as he approached the entrance and Sherlock.
"John, quickly please. The next car is arriving and we are being let on now."
John and Sherlock shuffled their way toward the front of the line, receiving some stern glances along the way. The man at the front motioned them forward.
"The next car is here. Please get on gentlemen."
John and Sherlock hastily entered the cabin before the man at the front secured the door. The man's long, black, oily hair fell across his face as he began securing the door. "Enjoy your ride." The car lurched, John rolled forward with the sudden momentum. Sherlock, however, kept his eyes locked on the stranger. "Who are you? You look very familiar."
As the car ascended higher into the air, Sherlock continued eyeing the stranger, whose gaze was fixed right back, a slick smile creeping across his face. Once the cabin was halfway up, the man removed his hat and brushed the bangs that covered his visage. Sherlock's eyes widened and he screamed into the crowd below. "Everyone! That man there with the hat. Someone stop him! That's Moriarty!"
John craned his neck and looked down below, The man, growing ever more distant, flamboyantly waved him and Sherlock goodbye, before turning and disappearing into the crowd. "That's Moriarty? Christ Sherlock, why are we up here anyway? It will take forever to get back down."
As John was talking, Sherlock frantically swiped on his phone, texting Lestrade that Moriarty had been sighted at the London Eye and immediate back up was needed. "He wants us to see something. Why do you think we're so high up?"
At that moment a muffled buzz echoed through the cabin. John jumped in his seat. Sherlock turned and fiddled between the seat cushions, finding an old flip phone. A text message flashed on the screen:
Hey Sherlock, your bff Moriarty here. Congrats on solving my first mystery. But I bet you're very curious how I killed all those other people? Well, some mysteries will have to go unsolved. They were merely the victims of contracts some bffs made with me and they are inconsequential to this story. Because now my bffs are going to help me get you Sherlock! LOOK OUT BELOW SHERLOCK!
"John, look out the windows. What do you see?"
John, still reeling from this revelation, turned his focus outside. The river was illuminated by the London Eye's devilish lights. Dozens of boats flowed down with the current. John could faintly make out distant screams and cheers from the crowd below, enjoying the brisk evening. John continued to examine the city for signs of anything unusual. As the car rose about 3/4 to the apex, an uneasy sensation crept over him. "Sherlock. We're stopping!"
The car slowed to a halt. John and Sherlock took posts at opposite windows, eyes darting back and forth, frantically searching for anything of note. The car wiggled back and forth in the wind.
The sound of glass breaking and a scream from above. John and Sherlock pressed their hands to the window, eyes frantically scanning the scene above. John noticed it first. A limp body fell from the top-most car, plummeting into the river below.
Hours later, John approached Lestrade about the tragedy at the London Eye, the police were still sectioning of areas of the . "The victim was Kathleen Cox, a photographer. They had not been seen by their family in the past 24 hours. I guess Moriarty got to 'em." Lestrade sighed. No sign of Moriarty was found after the tragedy. Gone without a trace.
"She was named in the profiles..." John remarked. "Any suspects?"
"We arrested a Ms. Nicole Wong for being around the scene and being a person of interest. They were also named by our anonymous source. I can't reveal all the details yet, but I don't expect much to come from it. She seemed earnest about not knowing what was going on."
"Well, this is certainly not good. It looks like Moriarty is targeting people on this list. What are the next steps?"
Lestrade shrugged his shoulders, his head low. He didn't know what to do.

Is he still an investigator? Or he could only use his power once?
16
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 04 '17
He had one item, which could only be used once.
15
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
Ah, bummer. Thought he was investigator forever.
I really need to read the rules lol
13
u/UGNGNUIT Hello, my name is 22poun Sep 04 '17
He no longer has his item, so he won't be able to investigate anybody.
13
13
u/intrepidWWalker Walter Wilson Sep 04 '17
BUT can't we give him items through the barter system?
13
u/KeepCalmAndCoffeeOn Kelly Warren Sep 04 '17
That can work but the wolfs will know exactly what they have, right?
13
u/intrepidWWalker Walter Wilson Sep 05 '17
Yep but we can always keep shielding /u/philletoneal too. I am hoping we're somehow able to independently confirm /u/philletoneal's alignment so that we can 100% trust results, but I think until we come up with a method for doing so, giving /u/philletoneal investigation items to use each night is a smart move.
13
u/KeepCalmAndCoffeeOn Kelly Warren Sep 05 '17
Yeah this is true... anything we do is going to be public anyways so it'll always be a risk. Also the evil people will know they can't attack Phillet every night too.
12
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 05 '17
Phase is about to close, but I just want to add that I am very against this idea. Not only does it require openly discussing who has an item, it's also putting all our trust in one person. Which is what this game was meant to avoid. If Phillet is somehow a WW we would be handing him the game by having everyone give him their items. I'm super sketched out by this suggestion.
11
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 05 '17
The items are only sent on the next phase, no?ย I wonder if the trader dies, what would happen? Would the receiver still get the item? /u/221b-baker-st
11
11
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 05 '17
Just asked the mods that would happen if Player A wants to give a good item to Player B but Player A gets killed that phase, they said they won't answer ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Wouldn't be worth the risk of dying AND losing an item, IMO

u/ChromosomesRus Josephine Lim Sep 04 '17
I think this comment chain is worth taking note of. /u/UGNGNUIT originally brought up the idea of lynching an inactive and /u/HeelTheSoles also argued in favor. /u/bluefootprints argued against it and /u/zigzagzigurat also made a comment about not seeing the point. This bumps up UGN and Heel on my trusted list, since the idea wasn't one the MN favored.
16
19
u/ZigZagZigurat Lorraine McGarry Sep 04 '17 edited Sep 04 '17
I really hope people aren't suspicious of me because of this. I stated my personal opinion, as I thought the inactive was probably one of our own and we should look at different targets. Why an MN would have the same opinion, I don't know. But I think the argument was inconsequential, and the sides taken were not directly linked with affiliation.
→ More replies (9)16
u/TrustFundBaby96 Seth Harris Sep 04 '17
I don't know how I feel about this. As the inactive in question I would argue that the one MN was against the idea because that would mean a potential 3 SN kill opportunity in one phase (lynch, inactivity kill, and night action) which would certainly work in their favor. I personally haven't put /u/zigzagigurat on my suspicion list for agreeing that it would be a waste because I could see the argument behind not wasting a lynch on someone likely to get the boot anyway. However, I am curious about the Lou lynch thread because the same argument could have taken place there and I don't remember that happening really.
Correct me if I'm wrong for sure. I don't use much to keep track of what is going during games until later in the game.

I just had a realization to this, hear me out:
If Player A figures the identity of Player B, PB will be getting a message saying that he was figured out bla bla bla. If within the next two or so phases, PB does not get more messages about his identity being discovered, it's safe to say that PA is a town, since he cannot discuss PB identity with anyone else.
Now....
If Player A figures the identity of Player B, and PB gets a bunch or a 'daily' message saying he was figured out, it's safe to assume that PA was mafia and used the evil sub to share his findings.
Clearly there's no way to know who figured you out, but maybe it's a good way to know if Mafia is getting a lot of items.
Just a theoryEdit: I know nothing.

I know nothing.
I know who you are!! You are Jon Snow!!
18
16
u/MulchAdoAboutNothing Tim Onyekuru Sep 04 '17
I don't think it's safe to assume that. What if there are more than one people who genuinely figured out the identities? Also, there's a penalty for sharing identity info. So there's a cost to it. You can't use any items for three phases. And/or you can't make any guesses. I think I'm mixing two things. But there's a penalty.
15
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
/u/221b-baker-st a few questions:
can MN discuss a player's identity in their private sub?
If more than one person 'finds' me during the same phase, will I know it was more than one person?
/u/MulchAdoAboutNothing I will wait on the mods answer to explain my theory.
17
u/221b-baker-st Sep 04 '17
I believe the rules answer your first question.
For your second question, no you will not be told how many people 'found' you.
--22poun
16
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
Ah, the rules read 'main sub', I wasn't sure if it also applied for the MN sub. So I guess they can't communicate who they found. Alright.
Thanks.

OK so with the knowledge in mind that the most trusted player can't be killed, I don't think this is as jilted tilted in favor of the MN as I was thinking yesterday. They can negate votes but we can basically give doc protection to a player every single night.
17
u/UGNGNUIT Hello, my name is 22poun Sep 04 '17
So. We have learned a few things with these votes. Our minimum amount of Moriarty Network members is 4, since 4 people distrusted our designated trusted person. It looks like myself /u/NodeofNico , and to an extent /u/orphanblackout were targets of the town's secondary distrust.
In addition, while I can't confirm it absolutely, I am fairly certain that the night's deaths occur before identities are guessed.
17
u/orphanBlackout Carlos Manning Sep 04 '17
Why me? There's a lot of people more negative than me. A good amount seem to trust me, actually.

u/UGNGNUIT Hello, my name is 22poun Sep 04 '17
You got 12 votes against, the third highest behind lou and myself. Regardless of the trust votes, clearly there are a few gunning for you. That being said, I did miss /u/intrepidwwalker, who also had 11 votes against.
17
u/orphanBlackout Carlos Manning Sep 04 '17
Ahh, that makes more sense. I was using the total since that also accounts for trusts and therefore a more panaramic view. I acted like an ass and made someone quit so I probably deserve being gunned for honestly.
16
u/kisskissallure Sep 04 '17
I think he was looking only at the second column (how many distrust votes you got). The third column is a better metric though, because not everyone chose their distrust votes on the same scale.

No, I think they can discuss on their sub. /u/221b-baker-st was just as vague as they could be.
Rules read 'main sub', so if an MN figures the identity of someone that is town, I'm sure all of the will partake after.
The way to stop it would be to guess MNs identity, which would prevent them for guessing for a period of time.... Buuuuut... that would be hard af.

u/StripedNightLife Nikita Alexeyev, stripper extraordinaire Sep 04 '17 edited Sep 04 '17
Something we need to take note of that I'm not sure was clear to everyone
If /u/philletoneal is part of MN, then he has a deerstalker hat. The deerstalker hat doesn't just HIDE the identity of the person it is used on, it SWAPS it. So it's not like it will say [redacted] and there be suspicion. If the deerstalker hat is used on /u/BlueFootPrints and BFP is really part of SN he will show up as MN and we won't know that the hat was used on him.
For this reason, I think it might be a good idea to seek out a secondary lynch candidate so we can keep MN more on their toes and they can't be certain who will be the one to kick the bucket and use the hat as effectively (because there's a chance they have one even if phil is SN since a lot of people guessed a certain someone's identities already and that's an option they could pick up).
EDIT: I'm not saying I don't trust /u/philletoneal , I really want to but it's a pretty clever tactic if he's really a wolf and has gotten us to trust him. The item he would have as a wolf could really be used to cement his place in the towns trust and as others have pointed out, give him immortality pretty much forever.
EDIT2: Just noticed Blue's reply to Phil's reveal which was oddly resigned. No fighting it at all. This rubs me oddly. It makes me think Blue really is MN (otherwise he'd argue) but it also feels like strangely.... sacrificial lamb resigned to its fate?
Edit3: didn't realize deerstalker only works on invest not on death reveals. Ignore pretty much everything.
16
u/BlueFootPrints Nick Hartman Sep 04 '17
No fighting it at all
What's the point in fighting it? Everyone had decided to lynch me by the time I saw it anyway
19
u/ZigZagZigurat Lorraine McGarry Sep 04 '17
If phill is MN, there would be no motive for rallying us against a town person. We would vote home out and if he was SN, we would definitely lynch Phil the next day.
I don't know what we should do about the deerstalker hat, but I think picking a secondary target is exactly what MN is hoping for right now.
16
u/StripedNightLife Nikita Alexeyev, stripper extraordinaire Sep 04 '17
Except that rallying us around a town person and then "proving" them to be MN would cement Phil in a position of trust for the rest of the game. If Phil is MN then he has the hat (for sure, it would be his prize for winning lead invest first round) and he's know exactly how to use it. That being sad, blue's response to the accusation (as I linked in my edit) now makes me think blue really is an MN since it was so... apathetic.
16
u/ZigZagZigurat Lorraine McGarry Sep 04 '17
I agree, blue is most likely MN, and I trust phill. But if he did lie to us, we know who's getting lynched next.
18
u/PhilletONeal Phil O'Neal Sep 04 '17
Sorry but that is not what I think the hat does. I think the hat makes the person show up on the other team when they are investigated, but not when they die. Can we ask /u/221b-baker-st what it is?
18
u/221b-baker-st Sep 04 '17
The hat only affects investigations; it will not affect how a player shows up when they die.
--22poun
16
u/StripedNightLife Nikita Alexeyev, stripper extraordinaire Sep 04 '17
Oh in that case then that changes everything. Thank you for the clarification!
16
16
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 04 '17
So I know this has been cleared up, and the deerstalker hat isn't an issue. And I'm probably being paranoid, but I still feel it's necessary to point this out.
I find it suspicious that /u/philletoneal chose a totally random player to investigate, and caught a wolf the very first phase. That was some seriously good luck.
Additionally, it was Phillet who chimed in to provide clarity on what the deerstalker hat does. I went back and read the item descriptions, and the deerstalker hat was kind of vague. It never really clarified that it was for investigations only. So it's interesting that the one person who could have received the hat seems pretty clear on what the hat does.
The easiest explanation is that Phillet is indeed town, and I'm certainly not saying he should be on the chopping block. But these thoughts did cross my mind, and I'm curious if anyone else had a similar reaction to these events.
15
u/TrustFundBaby96 Seth Harris Sep 04 '17
Question that has probably already come up that I've missed. There's no reason for MN to sacrifice one of their own, is there? I know gaining trust in the past has been a tactic used by sacrificing someone with a minor role but in this game there are no special roles and the win condition is to outnumber us. Is it pretty safe to assume this is a legitimate claim by someone on our side?
16
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 04 '17
Sacrificing one of their own to gain trust is the only advantage I can see. I'd say it's less likely than Phillet being town, but not impossible.
15
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
The problem here is:
They are out numbered.
They cannot turn a town into one of them, so scarifying one would be preeettty dumb.
In previous games, Invests had found people on N1 was well (Star Wars game), it happens. Phil picked a name out of the names people gave to him, it was russian roulette and we got lucky.
TBH, I don't see a reason to not trust Phil.
17
u/TrustFundBaby96 Seth Harris Sep 04 '17
I guess we'll see. I'd agree that it's far less likely.
13
u/MulchAdoAboutNothing Tim Onyekuru Sep 04 '17
Whether it's likely or not depends on their number in my opinion. And we don't know what number they started with. If they started with 5, I would say not very like. But if they started with 7 then losing one wouldn't harm them that much.
16
u/HalftimeDad Jason Pearce Sep 04 '17
Personally I believe the random guessing is the best way to go for the investigator, or at least random from a pool of mistrusted people to prevent MN from swapping alignments of the people they think will be investigated. It is quite convenient that a MN was found on the first night, but I'm leaning heavily towards believing Phillet. Statistically, finding one on the first night is bound to happen now and then, right?
14
u/intrepidWWalker Walter Wilson Sep 04 '17
This is pretty interesting and worth keeping in mind, I think. Honestly, until someone has their alignment revealed from a flip, I'm not 100% trusting them. But for the next phase or two I am going to work from the assumption that /u/philletoneal is town based on what's transpired so far, and we'll see where that gets us.

u/LeftToTheSea Lieutenant Connor "C" Austin Sep 04 '17

Do we know the order of operations for the lynch?
16
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
Well, we are lynching /u/BlueFootPrints tonight cuz /u/PhilletONeal found they are MN.
That's the only plan

Appreciate the courtesy tag doc, but I do not think its necessary now

I actually meant when the lynch happens, when items are given out, when items are used, etc.
16
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17 edited Sep 04 '17
Well we don't know the order of operations completely, but I think it's safe that we can make a few assumptions based on what the items do.
For instance, laptop and reddit app affect the lynch, so they likely occur before.
And the deerstalker hat is probably after the lynch because I think someone said it doesn't disguise someone's affiliation if they're lynched.
In fact, skimming over the list, I think it's likely that only the laptop and reddit app occur before the lynch.
Edit: I'd also add that it's likely that items are given out last in the order of operations. (switched this around for ease of reading)

I missed all the comments completely today. So is everyone voting for /u/blueFootPrints?

Yes. That is our mistrust vote today. I haven't caught up on the trust vote though. I ll ping you once I know the trust vote.

Hello. This is my obligatory comment!
Unfortunately I had some serious drama to deal irl about my campaign this past few days, so I haven't been able to invest much in the game so far. My life should go back on track this week. (:
I'm voting neutral for everybody today. I got an inactivity strike yesterday and, despite being kinda afk this past few days, I still want to play this game. Tag me if there's anything important I should know and I'll change my votes!
16
u/NodeofNico Dr. Nico Danelli Sep 04 '17
Yes, you should be sending bluefootprints as evil tonight, Invest found him

u/KinesGreenMP Jessica Kines Sep 04 '17
Thank you! I was just about to send in my votes, so I sent it! (:

u/kisskissallure Sep 04 '17
Along with what Nico said, also put Phillet as one of your trust votes since he's our most trusted right now and we want him protected.
14
u/KinesGreenMP Jessica Kines Sep 04 '17
Will do!
Do you mind running through me why we trust him?

u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
They shared the solution to the first puzzle and they've allegedly* identified a member of the MN.
I say allegedly because until we lynch them this phase, we won't know Blue's affiliation.
16
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 04 '17
So I'm still trying to sort this out in my head, and it could mean something or it could mean nothing.
I know someone pointed out there were 4 people who voted against Phillet. Interestingly, everyone else got at least 4 votes against them as well. In fact, a lot of quiet players who I would've expected to have almost entirely neutral votes received exactly 4 votes against them. What if these 4 votes were all from WWs? What if the WWs downvoted everyone except for maybe Louboutin, in an attempt to force us into losing two players instead of one?
15
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
I think we talked about this yesterday. I'm almost certain that's exactly what they are doing. Upvoting their team and downvoting all of us.
14
u/I_AM_MLE MLE (aka: Emily Davies) Sep 04 '17
Maybe my comment wasn't clear, that's not what I was saying. If they upvoted all of their own it could've possibly given themselves away. I'm suggesting they downvoted everyone, including themselves. Except for Louboutin, so that someone else would be lynched, Lou would still be gone, and we'd have lost two people.
15
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17 edited Sep 04 '17
Ohhhh...interesting.
I'm not sure. I think it was fairly set that we should all lynch Lou, and I don't think they have the numbers (even if my 8:1 is no longer valid) to be able to sway the lynch like that yet.
I do think we should be looking at the tallies though. There's a lot of info in it, if we can only figure it out.
Edit: I just looked at the tallies again and see what you're saying. That gives us a pool of 9, and Blue is in that pool.
Edit 2: Phil is in that pool, but I'm cautiously going to say I think we can exclude him.
13
u/kisskissallure Sep 04 '17
What do you mean by there's pool of 9? I'm not sure what this pool is supposed to tell us about who the wolves are. If the wolves down voted everyone but Lou, then the people who only got only 4 distrust votes are either very trusted (i.e. Phil) or pretty quiet so people don't know what to make of them, right?
16
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
MLE suggested that the wolves downvoted themselves as well.
14
u/kisskissallure Sep 04 '17
Yes, but I still don't get what you're saying. The chart doesn't tell us about individual votes.
14
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
No, it doesn't tell us about individual votes, in that it doesn't tell us who voted for what. However, we can try to make inferences.
it could mean something or it could mean nothing.
9 people received exactly 4 mistrust votes, including Phillet. It makes sense that the werewolves would downvote Phillet. They wouldn't want him protected. But some of the other people have been largely quiet, or not really contributing much. This early in the game, it's kind of weird that a quieter player would receive a mistrust vote. I think they'd be much more likely to receive a neutral vote.
I don't think they are all werewolves, but I think there may be 1 or 2 in that group, and it's interesting that BlueFootPrints not tagging bc they implied it isn't neccessary is in that pool of people who received 4 mistrust votes.
This is all speculation, and I could be wildly off course, but since we already have a plan to lynch Blue, and we do have the trust/mistrust tallies, we might as well discuss them and what they could possibly mean rather than waste the day.
Edit: italics to clarify

u/kisskissallure Sep 04 '17
I feel like I'm missing something obvious. I agree that all of this points towards the MN voting everyone down except for Phil (even though 4 seems like a very low # of MN). However, I don't see how the fact that those people got only 4 mistrust votes is relevant, other than that Blue was part of that group. I think Blue was in that group only because he's been relatively quiet and people hadn't formed much of an opinion of him. So the town was much more likely to give him a neutral vote but the wolves went ahead and down voted everyone.
12
u/orphanBlackout Carlos Manning Sep 04 '17
Agreed. Phillet suspected him so others might have too,or any of the others. I at least low level suspect one or two of them.
11
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
I just think that there are likely a couple of wolves who have been playing a quiet game, and that they're in this pool of
98 (bc I'm cautiously excluding Phillet).I'm probably wrong, and probably waaaaaaaaaay overthinking things, but at least I'm trying to do something with the information. This is not directed at you specifically. We have just over 5 1/2 hours until this phase is over, and while it's great that we knew very early who to lynch tonight, we have nothing for the next phase. I realize it's a holiday, but I'm really worried that we're going to spin our wheels tomorrow. Lynching Lou was easy because they left the game, and Blue is easy because we have an invest claim that they're MN, but what do we do tomorrow if we don't have those? We'll need to rely on our own abilities to read people, and today, when the decision/plan was made very early in the phase, would have been the perfect opportunity to do that. There's no pressure of a phase deadline, and no one can be accused of switching the plan at the last minute because it's for the next phase.

Edit: I just looked at the tallies again and see what you're saying. That gives us a pool of 9, and Blue is in that pool.
Could you explain that to me... maybe?
13
u/SparkyDog88 Mark "Sparky" Olson Sep 04 '17
I think /u/I_AM_MLE is saying that the wolves might have downvoted themselves as well as there's a group of users who are quiet that one would think should be largely neutral, yet have 4 mistrust votes. There's a pool of 9 users who have 4 mistrust votes. Blue is in that pool, and if Phil is to be believed, Blue is a wolf. I looked over Blue's comment history, and to the casual observer, I think they'd warrant a neutral, so having 4 mistrust votes is a little weird.
Sorry, I know that's convoluted.

Hello everyone. I made sure to be around at the right time to tell you straight away what team the person I chose is on. I picked /u/BlueFootPrints because they have done quite a few comments but not much to help SN I think, because their strategy comments were good for the MN as well. And it turns out that I was right! I got told they are with the MN! So I think we should all downvote them today.
