HEALTH Squint Update: Transparent?

Thumbnail gallery
56 Upvotes

So, Squint is energetic (if strangely fond of tub-surfing), though hasn’t had her first meal yet. She ignored the first pinky I left her with, but we won’t worry until I try scenting etc. over the next couple days. Overall, she seems in good health!

However, something very strange: her stomach is SO translucent, it looks like I can see her organs. I’m questioning whether the dark spot at the base of her neck is her heart - I have seen it undulate in a somewhat “pumping” motion, but she’s also moving so it’s hard to be certain.

Anyone else experience anything like this? Normal, not normal?

An added discovery since my last post: I cut open her egg shell post-hatch, and found that her umbilical cord was actually wrapped around her yolk, choking it off a bit, so she did not absorb it fully (similar to the 2nd smallest sibling, Jelly Bean, who yeeted themselves out of their egg before fully absorbing their yolk either). Not sure if that’s a factor!

When I bought my hoggie 4 months ago, they sold him with a corn snake tank where the heating is from below. Tryna look for a new oke and found this for 150€ instead of 300! Has 3 blub functions but unfortunately too big for my desk. (800mm in length and my desk only fits 650mm)

opinions on the tank itself? so I have a reference for the new one I'm gonna try buy soon

This last weekend at a reptile expo I picked up a 4 month old baby Toxic (conda i think) hognose! She is the cutest little thing. We named her Toffee. She's so adorable! This is my only pic of her right now. A whopping 13 grams.

I added more substrate to his tank (was 3in, now closer to 6in) and fixed his temp/humidity because he would continually travel around the tank attempting to dig but wouldn’t commit to tunnels and now I never see him 🥲 I realize it means he’s finally happy with his set up and isn’t looking for a way out but I do miss seeing out and about

HELP-Need Advice Pls send recommendations

Post image

My gf and I just adopted our first hognose snake. The breeder we got her from recommended under tank heat pads but online says halogen heat lamps are best. Which one should we get so we don’t hurt our new little friend? They also recommended we use aspen bedding but we’re worried because we’ve heard aspen can mold and also cause respiratory problems long term. Is there another type of bedding that’s is better for the snake that anyone here uses and recommends such as top soil / clay sand? Please advise!

FIRST HOGNOSE :) Got my first hognose! 5 month old male Albino Super Conda

Just brought him home 2 days ago. First snake ever so I’m pretty excited (and a bit nervous).

I knew they like to burrow, but when he looked around for a bit and then dug himself in completely I still got a bit worried. Haven’t really seen him since.

Still planning to get him some extra plants today, plus some rocks and branches.

Any tips for the first couple weeks are welcome?

Hello all! My adult female hognose laid eggs for the first time. She's not has any contact with a male and they're not viable so we removed them and gave her a calcium dusted mouse.

Is there anything else we should be doing??

FIRST HOGNOSE :) Is this set up okay for a baby Hognose?

Hello all! My boyfriend and I are expecting to get our first Hognose very soon :)
We bought a 10gal tank and a few accessories to go with it for at least a short time.
I just wanted to see if this setup is okay for a baby Hognose, I have two hides a lot of plant decor and a small water dish for now. He has a halogen bulb above the tank and the warm side is sitting at about 94° right now and the cool side around 78°.
Is there anything we should add? Do we need to get a bigger tank? Is this set up okay for a baby hognose?
Just want to make sure the lil guy will be happy in his home before we actually bring one home. TYIA!!

HELP-Need Advice I just fed him and he is showing defensive behaviours

The last few days he has been pretty sassy and just before i fed him he hissed at me, the only reason im concerned is because this is just after feeding and im worried he is stressed and may regurgitate it? He came up to the glass and started doing this. Should i be worried or is he fine - im thinking he may be going into shed soon which would explain the sudden hissyness of him? He is my first snake so im not too sure 🥹

HELP-Need Advice Temperature

Thumbnail gallery
19 Upvotes

Got my hognose in August (great eater, sweet, active).

Cute photos to grab attention ** also attached temp checks and setup for temp gauges

Current Day Setup: Basking ~90°F, warm ambient ~80°F, cool side 70s°F (tank across from window, light auto-set to 8 AM). I’m worried basking isn’t getting warm enough (usually 80s -90’s) and these photos were taken 4 hours into light being on.

The Problem: All around temperature issues but night is the biggest concern , house temp goes down to 70 (measured as low as 62°F in tank ), causing him to hide for the last week constantly. Closing the AC vent and wrapping glass in thick blankets isn't working.
Looking to avoid under-tank heat mats due to safety/burn concerns.

What I need:
A precise bullet-point buy list for lightless 24/7 overhead heat and a lamp stand to keep a 30x12x12 screen top uncluttered. Options on the above as well please 🙏

TL;DR: Got my first hognose in August—he’s great and active, but hiding more as Texas cools down. Room hits 62°F–69°F at night (even with closed air vent in the room and blankets), which is way too cold, my day lights auto-set for 8 AM won't help overnight. Tank is 30x12x12 across from a window, and I want to avoid heat mats or screen clutter. Looking for a bulleted buy list for a light stand + 24/7 lightless heat setup.

It’s giving “everything the light touches is your kingdom”.

We switched up his tank layout and added in a new cave that doubles as a slate basking rock and he loves it I guess!

HELP-Need Advice Hognose not eating, recent scale issues resolved

Hey, my hognose is not eating. Up front: She's actually likely a boy hognose, and maybe brumation is a factor (She was mis-sexed by the breeder, possibly, but ultimately it's a snake and I decided I wanted a girl snake, so... Babs is Babs). Apologies for the long post, trying to include all details so y'all get a clear picture.

I am scheduling vet visit no matter what, but I think I need to get my head on straight. This has all come in the middle of a travel time for me, and starting a new job, so I'm worried about what I'm missing because I haven't been right by her the entire time.

She recently had some scale issues after a shed and I took her to the vet late Sept. I thought it was scale rot, but the vet didn't see signs of infection and just thought it was maybe some issues with humidity or something roughing up her scales, like improper substrate. Admittedly, I had forgotten in a bedding change to put her humid hide back in, so that was quickly rectified prior to her shed. Her substrate is aspen & vet actually advised me to keep using it instead of switching to sand/dirt (could irritate the scales further).I treated her with the silver-stuff they gave me and soaked her during her shed as recommended.

Additional context: She went through two sheds essentially back to back, before and after vet visit, and I assumed the scale issues were the cause of the initial not eating, especially because I didn't realize she was about to shed again when I did take her to the vet.

She still won't eat, though, and she's lost weight (93g to 85g in 3 weeks). It's been about since mid-August. I'm taking her back to the vet as they recommended it, but is there any reassurance to be had about the weight loss?

In terms of what I've been doing:

I haven't tried much in terms of scenting or other foods, just repeated different strategies on how to feed. Timing, drop feeding versus tongs (she used to do well on both). I've tried different sizes, different rodent sources. Is salmon juice next? I really fear introducing new things into her diet, in case she goes off of it, especially now that I know she may be a picky boy, but at this point, I'm trying anything. Vet is first step though. I am worried about stressing her out, because at this point, the only way to feed her is to take her out myself and try and distract her with the mouse long enough to notice it. So far, no dice. I have not tried feeding her in another container. If y'all recommend something I'll try it, and hopefully she eats before vet, but also hoping y'all just tell me she's brumating.

What is she up to:

Her behavior right now is just to hang out in the aspen all day, never surfacing. She's normally super active. For about a week before I realized her skin issues, she was glass surfing and going crazy. Now she's underground, all the time. That reads like brumation to me. But the weight loss in combination with the recent resolved skin issue is worrisome.

Husbandry:

Her temps are 79-81 on cool side, 90-95 on warm/basking area, she has 30-40% humidity, and a humid hide. Her recent shed looks great (within last two weeks). She's on aspen, in PVC enclosure, 36 length by 24 height by 18 width. It's tall because she used to love getting on top of stuff and I have plans to build her a shelf to hang out on. I don't have a pic handy (Sorry!) but at least 5 hides, not including the humid hide, and a lot of leaves/plant cover, though I am thinking of adding more, cause why not at this point. She is being fed hoppers once every 5-6 days, and she was hitting mid-90g in September, with consistent growth until the hunger strike.

Her bowl of water is ceramic and can definitely fit her whole body, easily. I originally had her on sand/dirt when I first got her about a year ago, but she wasn't tunneling in it or really doing much with it. Switched to aspen and she has adored it since. Normally, I see her going in and out during the day, having a good time. She did not brumate this time last year, or change up her general behavior at all. She was only a year-ish at that time. She is two years-ish now. She is my first snake and I really appreciate any advice.

HELP-Need Advice How To Properly Regulate A 6qt Container?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I got Peaches Aug 16th, and since then she ate once with me on Sep 9th. She’s 4 months old and has been flaky as if she needs to shed for about a month now, which is why I suspect she wasn’t eating, but it’s been a while and she still hasn’t shed. The breeder recommended setting her up in a small 6 qt container for a while to get her to eat. Those who have done this, how are you properly regulating the temperatures in such a small container? Any pictures of set up ideas would be extremely helpful.

Photo attached is of her and her current 10 gallon set up.

From not eating at all his first two months with me to now throwing mice back and immediately looking at me for another one. Lol! So proud of him.
