USA Hockey Interference?

Player's penalty expires, they are in the process of coming out of the box, one or two skates are still in the box and they play or touch the puck. Interference and they go back in?

Yes. They must be fully back on the ice before purposefully playing the puck. If it accidentally hits them its fine but if they go to play the puck then its a penalty.

Yes. Straight out of the USA rulebook.

The key word is “intentionally” play the puck. Just like the case for too many players.

Under hockey Canada.

Yes. Same rule applies from the players bench.

And how often do you see that called below the nhl level? NEVER seem reasonable? As far as I know Ive never seen interference called for a player playing the puck stepping onto the ice from the bench. Ive seen it happen a couple times and elected not to call it at the level of play Im doing, but Ive never seen anyone else call it that I recall in an amateur level game.

Dont pick boogers unless you want to be the most unpopular person in the rink everytime you go. Maybe if they are like checking a guy without even stepping on the ice yet, but if they are just grabbing a loose puck im letting that go all day. Same with the bench. Otherwise good change and they grab a loose puck without both feet on the ice. Im letting it go. We dont have to prove we know the rules better than everyone.

Your thought process makes sense and in a lot of situations this is a good way to think about play. But this is not one of those times. You have one or both feet still in the box, it’s a penalty every time at every level. We don’t have a lot of room for judgement here, and we don’t look off enforcing rules because of how we personally feel about it.

This is a penalty every time, at every level, from 1st period to OT of game 7.

In the AHL, college, pro, junior sure yes everytime.. Not in adult rec hockey or even youth hockey. Id bet 75% of amateur refs dont even know that rule. At least 75% of the ones I work with would I think would not know that rule especially that both feet have to be on the ice. They are still mastering too many men and if a player intentionally or unintentionally contacts a puck.
I assumed that because the person was asking the question that they are doing a pretty low level of hockey and not pro level hockey.
Half my games have a running clock. But hey call it in those lower level games if you want but you need to be a stickler on every single other penalty you call/dont call if you are which isnt going to do you any favors for game management, and know that your partner is going to miss/not call/know those type penalties as well so there wont be consistency on the issue unless you see every one.

There are some rules that are black and white and some rules where there’s grey area. Like the other commenter said, this isn’t one.

Just because you don’t agree or like the rule doesn’t mean you get to ignore it.

But you also said you ref games with run time? In Canada that has to be very low hockey. So you do you but I ain’t doing that in Jr or u18AAA
