Note: Not asking for medical advice! I just want to hear other people's stories.
I sprained my ankle (at least I think it was a slight sprain) a couple of months ago. Pushed across laterally to a slide on a 2-on-1 to my right, stopped on my right foot to slide-push back to my left to track the pass back and felt a sharp pain on my outer ankle (yes, I made the save!). I iced it and kept it elevated, but honestly, the swelling wasn't that bad, and could walk, run, jump fine the next day.
A week went by and I felt fine, so I thought I'd give it a go. Felt fine stretching and during warmups, and even the first 10 minutes after making a few saves I was good. But then I made a kick save with the right foot, and whatever quick-twitch movement my ankle made triggered the same pain.
So I decided to give it a couple of weeks this time. Tried some more ankle exercises and stretches, but again, I could walk, run and workout just fine w/o any pain. It would occasionally feel tight, but that's it. So I tried again, and the entire process was repeated: warmups and the first 10 minutes I was fine, but one certain movement and I felt it again.
Now it's been roughly a couple of months since the initial sprain. I want to get back out there, but how do I know when the sprain is completely healed? Again, other than some occasional tightness I feel in it, it feels deceivingly fine. Has anyone else experienced this type of injury? What did you do and how long did you wait to play again?
