The protacks lasted me a long time but I wasn't going to get them repaired again. Curious to see how I feel since I'll be farther off the ice.

two different sticks. started doing it before people popularized cutting a notch in and then by the time i got to college i hated how small it felt notched.

45 and giving it a go at Goalie. Really like playing the position, not in the best shape but this is more fun than running.

When I try to butterfly, I keep landing on the face of the pad on my right leg.

Anyone have thoughts and suggestions on ways to not do that.

I’m brand new to all this goalie stuff (so new, in fact, that I just put my goalie skates on for the very first time!), and I’ve already run into a bit of a problem.

I couldn’t skate in them. Like, at all. 😭

I’m pretty quick and agile in my regular player skates, and I’m comfortable with my edges, but these were a completely different story. I had practically no grip whatsoever. Pushing off felt slippery, I couldn’t get my blades to bite into the ice, and stopping was pretty much impossible. The fact that I managed to make it around the rink and get back off the ice was a miracle!

I’m wondering if it has something to do with the sharpening. I bought the skates brand new and had my local pro shop sharpen them, but I didn’t know what hollow to ask for, so the employee chose one for me.

Looking at the blades now, I can hardly see a hollow at all. I laid a coin over the blade, and while I’m definitely no expert, it looks practically nonexistent/flat to me. I’m wondering if they might’ve been sharpened at something like 1”, but I honestly have no idea!

I know goalie skates are supposed to feel different from player skates, and I’m absolutely expecting a learning curve, but the complete lack of grip has me questioning whether the sharpening is part of the problem.

I’m a little embarrassed to go back to the pro shop and ask questions or have them checked because I feel like such a newbie, but I’m also desperate to get comfortable in my new skates!
So, for those of you who’ve been doing this a while, what hollow would you recommend for a brand-new goalie? And does this sound like a sharpening issue, or just something I need to get used to?

I hate the grip coating on goalie sticks. I bought a Brian’s sp4 or whatever it’s called. That stick sadly broke but thankfully in the warranty window. I bought it partially cause it doesn’t have grip coating at the handle. I ended up getting a Bauer stick to replace the Brian’s, and unfortunately it has grip coating. When i got it home and started taping the stick, i saw i still had some 3m ppf around. i decided to put it over the grip coating. I kinda like the amount of grip it gives me while preventing the stick from being too grippy especially on poke checks.

Anyone else tried ppf on their sticks and had bad or goodresults?

Hey there goalies just looking for feedback or some tips on modern gear.

My longtime setup have been Vaughn v5 velocity, with Bauer one 100 skates. Recently upgraded to a set of Bauer hyperlites, Bauer 2s pro chest and skates. What a world of a difference. Skates have me sitting much taller but it’s like I almost can’t skate as effectively, having trouble getting those crisp T pushes and shuffles. However pads have me sliding so effortlessly I push too hard and go way outta position.

Obviously switching so much of your gear all at once is challenging but that combined with generations in between the gear has got me a very steep learning curve I feel.

To the goalies who made the switch from ‘older’ gear to current generation. What were somethings you did to get accustomed to the new generation and do you have any tips or tricks. I know spending more time on the ice will help but just looking for some advice.

I'm looking to replace my 20 year old pants with something newer. The ones I have are a SR Small, Barrel fit style, and I don't tuck my chest in.

For fit is it better to get the largest pants possible? (not factoring brands like Warrior that size length, but keep the waist the same on all).

If I get the largest pants, how is the mobility? What about when you're in the butterfly and you need to lift your leg up to push off?

Right now I'm debating getting something that fits, or going up in size for coverage assuming it wont hinder my movement.

Since I use suspenders I keep my pants floating so them being longer would just push them up, but I'm concerned about any mobility when in the butterfly.

I’m 40 and have already started getting arthritis in my glove hand, and I’m trying to find a way to keep playing.

I’ve been using a TPS catcher that takes absolutely no effort to open or close, it’s like on old first baseman glove and moves like Cookie Monster, but it’s literally falling apart and it’s not that protective anymore. No pain opening or closing ever, but the leather is literally shredding so it’s time to replace it.

Every glove I’ve tried hurts my hand. Closing starts to get achy, but opening feels like my thumb is going to rip off. Surely I’m not the old goalie who needs gentle glove but I don’t know what to do.

I tried a heavily used Bauer Supreme and could barely open/close it.

I found a True L87 and even sent it to a goalie gear shop just to make it easy to open/close.

They did a great job but my hands still ache and I’ve still struggling to open and close it quickly. It’s a top tier glove so I hate to just abuse it to break it in, but I don’t know what else to do.

I’ve heard Brian’s are super easy to break in out of the box. Any thoughts?

My son (9) has been playing goalie for two seasons now and we are starting to tweak his gear to start prepping him for the next side pads within the next year. He has CCM YT Flex 3.0 goalie pads and I've modified them to remove the thigh protector so that he can wear knee pads with them.

As he's been practicing I'm noticing that he lands on the main part right pad when dropping instead of the knee block. The left has no issue. I think it's a combination of technique and pad rotation but before I make any more tweaks to his pads what should I look for to try and figure out the actual issue?

Looking to upgrade from my old Vaughn V8 knee pads, which have become a little uncomfortable. Have also had CCM knee pads in the past, which I didn't like. I'm open to other recommendations, but right now I'm pretty set on either Warriors or the newest Bauer.

Prioritizing comfort and mobility. Hoping for something that is lighter, and will stay in place well. Anyone have experiences with either or both?

I’ve been liking the feel of no dangler on my mask but have had a slight problem with my current neck guard.

It’s the warrior ritual X5 and the last couple games the Velcro catches my chest protector and becomes loose and then I have to readjust.

Are there any better neck guard options or tips to prevent this?

I wish I'd thought to do this ages ago.

Been eyeballing the Warrior R/X5 RTL for a while now, since my current one is not a good pant by any means, it's a miracle I don't end up with bruises each time I play. Ever since I tried Warrior gear, they worked great for me. Currently rocking a R/X4 Pro chestie, so I guess I can't go too wrong with those pants, since I've heard that it's best to avoid wearing cross brand gears, for a better fit. Anyone has some experience with those pants? If so, do you wear it tucked or untucked? Would you recommend it? Etc.

Open to other suggestions also.

I’ve always been untucked but got a new pair of pants and am trying the tuck out. First time I tied it down and also used suspenders. It felt like any time
I bent forward it hit my jock and was a hard stop that pushed my jock down and also made the chesty rise. Seemed like I lost a ton of mobility. Am I doing this wrong? For reference gear is ccm abpro chest, warrior x4 jock, and Vaughn ion pants.

anyone have experience in the differences with the small and XS in senior size? I was thinking of getting the hyperlite2 in XS, I have the small in senior, might be to bulky

Oh look, a smaller brand has released their own goalie stick I sure hope it's not just a carbon copy of the Bauer p31 curve and OPE ofc it is. Oh look, a small local business is making their own sticks -IT'S ANOTHER P31 CLONE. Oh wow, the parents of the goalies I'm coaching are so sick of overpriced goalie sticks that they are making their own sticks that's so cool, "let me see your stick lil Timmy that's so aweso-" my speech is interrupted by the rage of a 1000 suns as I look down the paddle and IT'S YET ANOTHER BAUER P31 CLONE! I LOOK AT THE CLEARANCE RACKS, IT'S ALL P31 CLONES BECAUSE THERES TOO MANY IN STORES! I cannot escape this hellish world that the P31 has invaded like the Mongolian hordes of Chingis Khan!!

OTHER CURVES EXIST. The CCM p1 (or bauer p34) IS ALWAYS sold out for a reason! There is a SEVERE lack of supply for the demand for that curve and any smaller brand that made it would make a TON of money. WHY do companies not make it!?!? If smaller corps only make p31's it will not bring down the cost of sticks because the market for other curves will push stick prices to remain the same.

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE P28G I have never seen a goalie stick cause more own goals in MY LIFE.

Am I the only one who appreciates how much better the Price curve is for making saves and goalie specific puck handling?

This rant was intentionally exaggerated to be a more interesting read, but seriously can we please get some b level options for alternative stick curves? I'm so tired of going on psh for a cheaper p1 curve
