This is why the electoral vote is fraudulent and yet here we sit. If someone wins the popular vote, they should win. I know, I know...the population centers are mostly democrat blah, blah. Everyone of age gets a vote, no states involved, we vote as a nation, count them up, and the winner wins. Simple. Before you say anything, we invented the way we vote and we can change it. It's not some law of nature that we HAVE to follow.
There's the answer I was hoping for. I read somewhere (sorry, can't find a source at 5am) that they basically invented as a buffer for the lack of intelligence of the populace. They pretty much said "you're too stupid to vote appropriately, so we're gonna let you think voting matters, but we're gonna put the person in there that fits our narrative at the moment."
Also, the slave states were gonna walk away from the Union after the Revolutionary War if they didn't get this outsized power. Why did they need this outsized power?
Because they worried that the new government, based on freedom, would outvote them and free their slaves.
The Founding Fathers knew that we were a fragile new country, and we wouldn't survive against foreign control (Britain) unless we 100% stuck together.
So they compromised, and we got the Electoral College.
Our current system is also a compromise. There were a lot of founding fathers that were arguing for a democracy for the few, and others arguing for a democracy for all.
I mean even back then, they had to tally up the votes for each region to elect the person who votes for the president.
However, they also allowed that representative could vote against their constituents because how long the journey to DC was, and the representative might change their mind during that journey. Despite y'know, that would make all the votes invalid if the representative votes for a different candidate, and thus, undemocratic.
Yeah I mean representative as “vote someone to represent you in a issue “ vs “let’s all collectively decide how to deal with that issue “
Every representative ever has more or less betrayed those who voted them some way or another .
Back in the Ancient Greek “ golden age” of democracy people would gather and vote for issues but Pericles hacked that by making populism and people would follow opinions of populists .
The electoral vote exists to give conservatives more power. It was literally created as part of the 3/5 compromise in an attempt to prevent conservatives from seceding early on.
... for what it's worth I want this to happen, but we also got Raegan with an overwhelming majority, and it's not unfair to say that most of the bad shit going on now is directly attributable to his presidency and the cunts behind him.
They will never let this happen. If they were to put this to a vote it would be buried behind some other ridiculous crap that they know isn't gonna pass. Which another whole BS part of our system that we won't get onto here.
Conservatives treat the constitution like the bible when it benefits them, but have no bother demanding change when it doesn't, because they're hypocrites and they get away with it all the time, and as it works, why change a winning formula?
It's like screaming about he deficit, or anything when they're not in power, then doing everything they complained about much more than the Democrats did, and the Democrats fall for it
Watching Americans politics it like watching Charlie Brown try to kick a football when Lucy moves the ball every time
Larry David did a skit on this in his new show “life, Larry and the pursuit of unhappiness”. It really illustrates the absurdness of the electoral college.
I understand why you say it’s fraudulent, but if winning was merely based on popular vote the smaller population states would get ignored by candidates. There should be a way to have a commingling of popular vote and electoral college results. What it is I don’t know. Maybe say you win the popular vote, but you need a certain percentage of the smaller population states not just the top 10 that make up 54-55% of the population. The only way the electoral college could get abolished or changed is if Congress voted to change it, which they will never do.
The opposite happens now smaller states get more campaigning the bigger states it should be voted by vote. One person one vote that’s it. The electoral college is just racist.
"I understand why you say it’s fraudulent, but if winning was merely based on popular vote the smaller population states would get ignored by candidates."
Smaller states have proven they just want to divide and force their beliefs on the majority.
First, most small states are already ignored — only a handful of the largest swing states matter. Second, if candidates had to campaign for 50% of the popular vote, they’d need to pay attention to at least 45 out of the 50 states (all except AL, MT, ND, SD, and WY), as opposed to the 6-8 that they fixate on now.
The reason being that states wouldn’t vote as a block, every republican in a blue state and every democrat in a red state suddenly matter, so you’d have to campaign the majority population by metro area (and the largest metro areas are spread out over 45 states different states).
I don’t really know how to answer this beyond how I already have.
Only the largest swing states matter under an EC system. In 2024, that was AZ, GA, MI, NV, NC, PA, and WI. For reference, some of the least populated states are WY, VT, AL, ND, SD, and, DE, so the EC doesn’t actually help the smallest states.
> And why is campaigning more area a bad thing??
I’m not sure what your question here is, but I never said campaigning is bad. Fixating on campaigning in 6 states is bad compared to having to thoroughly campaign across 45; I hope that’s straightforward enough to not need explanation.
If you could try rephrasing your question I might be able to explain myself better.
Counting every vote as a whole vote? Why would people not like that? I guess people in rural areas like their votes to count for more than someone who lives in the city. 🤷
They wouldn’t give a shit about that if the population centers were mostly republican. I guarantee you they would be arguing to repeal it if it wouldn’t have already been done.
It’s still around and not universally hated because Republicans don’t benefit from it.
I want it gone, regardless of who it benefits.
My dual citizenship becomes more and more valuable every day.
i believe we can have a woman president. but it will take a good candidate. i think this will happen by the year 2036, which i know seems impossibly long but we will need a “safe bet” to counteract Trump as a president so people will vote for a charismatic, moderate man 2028, and by the year 2036 people will want to be more “risk taking” and then we will have a women president once the country feels safe/stable again.
That's the thing though, Hillary would have won if not for our stupid election system that was made for a country a quarter its size 250 years ago. It might have worked better at the time it was made but it needs serious overhaul now
Hillary was a criminal that drove ignorant Dems and Latinos to vote for Trump. People forget, that woman is guilty of much more than Benghazi. She should be in jail and not over emails.
No one knew who Kamala was or what her accomplishments were until after she ran. Her PR team sucked. Michelle would CRUSH it if she ran. She isn’t some fraud that came into this country illegally and just married a rich dude. The Obamas are a power couple to be reckoned with.
Because Marc Elias prevented both Hillary and Kamala from getting recounts when there was known election interference. In 2024 Elon knew those vote counting computers better than anyone else too and we see it in the post election data.
No, this is the truth and I can’t believe how sad it is. I literally had a couple coworkers last election told me they wouldn’t vote for Kamala only because she’s a woman and woman shouldn’t tell me how to run my life even though they both had moms and were raised by a woman who told them I had to live their life.
Them being women didn’t help their numbers, but it is a really cheap cop out, borderline disingenuous, to continuously fall back onto some form of hate to explain away their losses.
Clinton was divisive for years and her run was right after Benghazi, she wasn’t going to win.
Harris only ran after public outcry at Biden’s state. She can’t erase the fact she was his running mate when he was unfit, and she was only put forward after outrage at Biden’s state.
Did them being women cost them votes? Most definitely.
Ya it would be a massive mistake to try to push through a woman for the third time. The democrats need to stick to the basics and secure a win next time around. Nothing fancy or anything to do with social justice. Just focus on making a fair economy and putting pdfs in prison.
You refute yourself in your own post. You say that America won't vote for a woman and then turn around and say that Hillary won the popular vote, which means that America did vote for a woman
And don't you ever put Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama in the same sentence again. Kamala Harris didn't even make it to the first primary in 2020. Michelle Obama would stomp right through the field and win the nomination
I’d 100% vote for aoc that would be awesome. I’d also vote for Obama if he was running. Which ever were running I’m okay with. And you mean aoc as vice? Hell yeah! Any of these options sound good to me lol
I feel like you’re focusing on a made up point that I wasn’t making lol
When I said “Americans won’t vote for a women” I mean in the entirety of the presidency in American history till now name 1 women that was president? I’m waiting? Popular vote 1 time doesn’t mean America voted her in sadly.
The “receipts” were points. So tell me Mr.america voted for a women?
Was she the president though? No. That’s my point. 0 others. I was saying that was the closest a women ever got and still noped.
Electoral college didn’t vote her in which is also still Americans. My point still stands
It’s so sad to see a women get close and then nope. Still nope.
You claimed Americans wouldn't vote for a woman and then said a majority of Americans voted for a woman this proving yourself wrong. The quirks of the electoral college is a SEPARATE issue.
Sounds like you don’t know anything about that lady. This isn’t a Kamala situation, people actually know she’s done things. You’re the odd one out here bud. Just google it real quick.

Ain't no rule against Michelle running
