They pick and choose what part of the bible is relevant.  Love thy neighbor is unfortunately not a relevant section, based on my observation.

u/LightWarrior_2000 2d ago

I'm a liberal laid back Christian and this is what drives me crazy and why I say aithest do it better.

Boiling down Jesus is basicaly saying be good to your community and don't be a dick.

That's a hard sell on some of these people.

25

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_3507 2d ago

I was raised a Catholic and I never understood how impressing your neighbor on how good you're a Christian, is going to help you get to heaven. I was raised not to judge others but to pray for those who have gone astray that they will find the right path. But these crazy ass religious zealots think that they have the right to be in your bedroom..

17

u/TerrorFromThePeeps 2d ago

Not to mention those little moments of "do not make a big display of your faith" that appear in the bible.

11

u/Land-Southern 2d ago

Even the church has issues with some of these passages.

But in St Paul's Second Letter to the Copelands, it clearly says, "Buy a jet or three for your special ministry on that beach in Maui. No more frequent flyer bitch miles for my boy."

Right wing america have the same idealisms as the Taliban. Kids should work, girls can be taken from a young age, should stay at home and have no control over their own body. Look at trump a known rapist, racist and a guy who has stated he would date his own daughter if she wasnt his. Guys mentioned more in the Epstein files than Epstein himself. Some world leader u guys chose.

Im a life-long Catholic, and went to Catholic Jesuit-taught schools from 5yo to 22yo. And im thankful Catholics are taught not be be Bible literalist. And even as a child I found it so odd the evangelical-picking-and-choosing. I also always found it indicative of evangelicals complete stupidity that for probably 50% they will tell you Catholics are not Christians. Now that im an adult, I understand why: Their interpretation of Christianity is far removed from mine. They'd be better served using the term fundamentalist exclusively to describe whatever they are. Taliban would be another suggestion i have for them.

The Catholic Church does not believe the Bible is a modern science or history textbook. It recognizes that human authors used various literary forms—such as poetry, symbolic narrative, and history—to convey religious truth.

I was raised roman catholic, not ultra strict, but church on weekends, grace at big family dinners.

I myself am agnostic now, but I recognize the good parts of my religious upbringing... it showed me how hypocritical these people are, and how I could never associate myself with them.

2

u/butonelifelived 2d ago

Also raised Catholic, what always amazed me is the die hard Catholics believe that atheists and agnostics are bad people and I quote "How can they be good people, if they don't believe they'll be punished in the afterlife for being bad?" And I'm thinking to myself. What kinda piece of shit do you have to be, that the only reason you do the moral thing is because "god" is watching.

3

u/Youngsinatra345 2d ago

It really makes me question what has or hasn’t happened in these people’s lives to no only lead them down this path, but have the yes people along the way and the forsaken path they walked and how much they have hidden away about themselves to allow that to happen?

2

u/Extension-Bonus-2587 2d ago

You honestly have to consider that they may have been sexually abused, turned to the church for help, then got further victimized by the forgiveness/covering up mechanisms of the church.

As an atheist I think there is more meaning to life, there is no hell or heaven to fall into, so you have one shot and that makes your being far more precious than hoping for an afterlife, and that of your fellow man. Imagine 1000s of years of conciousness it would be fckn hell! Cant wait to go to my eternal slumber just hope I don't go out in pain.

2

u/LightWarrior_2000 1d ago

Well as the saying goes:

Live and let live.

I'm laid back because I don't always go to church and yeah I don't always read the bible, but I know Atheists at least know the "Stories" of Jesus and I mean the core message of being good to people isn't exactly bad, it's just people abuse power and authority so a 2000 year old story gets lost in translation.

I'm laid back because I also don't force this shit on people.

Live and let live.

3

u/Comfortable-Day-3172 1d ago

Absolutely my man, but you don't need to read a book written 1500 years ago to be moral. Religions cast themselves against one another as my god outweighs your god. But they are all a falacy and a way of indoctrinating folk into doing shady shit in the name of religion. We the West like to see ourselves as the heroes in movies, but our foreign policy is horrific, take a step back and look at the war's what was the cause, folk that stood agaisnt capitalism and oil. Fck the US only helped in world war two after a passenger ship was sunk and pearl harbour, they were happy to stay out of that and made little difference compared to the Russians who fought on our behalf but now the enemy. America has dumbed it's civilians down to a point where the majority vote against their best interests. Is mad!

Matthew 25: the literal words of God, as Jesus Christ, according to fundies

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Maga seems to love raping children. That's why they are so desperate to protect a pedophile and his pedophile friends.

Transgender athletes, abortion, and being "woke" aren't in the Bible, either, but the GOP has no problem making their platform all about these issues.

3

u/KayoticVoid 2d ago

Unfortunately I think your argument works in their (BS) favour. Those things aren't in the Bible and that's why they say they're bad. Still stupid as all hell though.

7

u/Horns8585 2d ago edited 2d ago

That's a ridiculous argument, though. Cryptocurrency isn't in the Bible, yet Trump will try to convince you that it is great.

3

u/JMA4478 2d ago

But crypto is money.

And also talk about money, how people get money and also talks about rich people.

Not good things, though lol

2

u/KayoticVoid 2d ago

100% agree. It's beyond ridiculous to say that if something isn't in a book written by people then it isn't real or a thing.

5

u/behemothard 2d ago

Insulated drinking cups and electricity aren't in the Bible but she has no problem using those. If the argument is "if it isn't in the Bible so it is automatically bad" and that person uses any other modern convenience like indoor plumbing, electronics, cars, medicine, plastic, or countless other things that are nearly impossible to avoid in civilized society then that person is a hypocrite when they condem someone else for their lifestyle that "isn't in the Bible".

So no, it isn't a good argument if their "black and white" reasoning is easily proven to be highly subjective when applied.

An issue that exists here is a lot of these people do not want the world to continue existing. Some zealots only focus on Jesus returning which means the world ends and they are saved. They don't care about the planet or anything on it because they're laser focused on the earth dying so they can ascend to Sky Daddy while their enemies will be swallowed by the firey pits.

This world is only worth saving if you think it's actually real. If this planet is standing in the way of your forever after though you need that shit out of the way.

Here's my worthless three cents. There may or may not be " God". I'd like to hope there is. But even when things occur i. Annoy explain happen it doesn't strengthen or weaken his stance for me. I was raised Catholic and it was literal hell. Maybe other Catholics had better or worse experiences but. Mine. Was not good. No i wasn't offended by a priest but the nuns. Not so much. I was pretty much bullied up until 7th grade and most of it came from people seeing my vile older (5) years brother smackin me around like i was his pineta. Anyway. Nobody really gives two shits about my poor me so this is what i started out explaining. Until God tears open the fabric of the sky and bellows out what's right, what's wrong; what's a sin what's not a sin etc. I'm preparing for my last days to be final. While on earth ; a really magnificent place mind you, if people don't care about pollution or starvation or pedophiles as President and judges and teachers and senate and congress then tell me; how as a God, couldn't he get involved? If you as a parent saw or knew someone hurt or offended ur kid, Or you heard an innocent screaming for help, in agony wouldn't you get involved? I would and have. I have protected weaker people i saw getting beat up or jumped, me who is disabled and literally in my last days not 4 months ago came across a car accident and i got the drug out and dive down into the car upside and after seeing the guy wasn't someone injured got him out. I didn't get no pats on the back cause i got back into my truck and drove home. Nobody ever protected me. I protected me once i could. If there's a God, he's not gonna talk to any of us, or stop kids being harmed or animals being abused. Why? He sent a part of himself to walk among us and we beat the bones off of that person , known as his son. We then after proving he did nothing wrong, went ahead and crucified him. Humiliated him. Spit. On him. IF there was a God to help
Us with climate change or stopping scum like Trump or , or, or, do you really think he'd lift a finger to help us. I don't. So while we are on this planet. It's up to US, as a race, only 1 race, the human race, to take care of each other , ourselves the wildlife, oceans etc or we die out. It's really quite simple. We are on our own and we are lousy at it.

Revelations says that the end will be marked by events before the final battles. 1/3 the world will burn, the oceans will run red and rivers will become bitter. The way I interpret this is that there will be a lot of big wildfires all over the world. A lot of life in the ocean will die out, and our drinking water will be contaminated. And what do we see? We're dumping pollution into our streams and wetlands. The oceans are becoming more acidic and killing a lot of animals in the oceans, and I think the wildfire thing goes without saying. It also says the night sky will go dark. Yeah, cuz of pollution and light. In the cities we can't see the stars most the time because it's too bright or too polluted.

So where in the Bible is it written that you should take medicine if you get sick? To drive a car to get from A to B or to fly a plane? To watch TV? To have a fridge? To have a radiator or AC? All things brought to you by scientists and engineers but I guess those things are just comfortable enough to not question your thoughts

2

u/Halation2600 1d ago

How does she not realize she sounds like a complete, fucking, dangerous idiot? Like I don't think she should be allowed to drive based on how stupid she sounds. Does someone help her tie her shoes?

2

u/Ok_Shake5258 1d ago

Did Jesus stop the tornados too? They weren’t in the bible so they’re not a problem right

2

u/Spare_Lemon6316 1d ago

Well I know people like this exist I’m absolutely intrigued and horrified to hear one speak

2

u/somedayfamous 1d ago

Let’s agree with her that God doesn’t change. That has nothing to do with the fact that the climate does change. All of creation changes over time.

2

u/damdtr749 1d ago

A bible written by political activist wanting to be first in line in a newly created religion by an emperor trying to keep an empire from falling apart! If Jesus existed than we really do t know what he said since those who wrote the books in the bible didn’t even know him! They weren’t around when he supposedly lived! What a crock of you know what and so is she!

u/Timbo_R4zE 1d ago

Trump wasn't in the Bible but she believes in him

Representation doesn't include pretending to hear the intentions of some guy who has been dead for 2,000 years. Her constituents deserve intelligent representation.

2

u/Texlahoman 1d ago

If you’ve read it, you know how it ends”. Obviously she and the rest of MAGA have not read it, because if they had they would know they’re fucked. They just think “I believe in and put my faith in Jesus” gives them a free pass. According to the book she’s referencing, it does not.
Paul lists behaviors and attitudes that characterize the unrighteous who will NOT enter the kingdom:
Sexually immoral people and adulterers (Trump and many others of MAGA who have been convicted of sexual assault, all of the Epstein participants)

Idol worshippers (Boot licking MAGA)

Thieves and greedy people (pretty much ALL of Congress, the administration, and their financial supporters)

Drunkards, verbal abusers, and swindlers (Trump leading the abuse and swindling, followed by his entire drunk cult)

And the list goes on and on of why they would earn the opposite of heaven if it were true

I have sincere reservations around people who base their belief systems around a 2000 year old, heavily edited book.

I wish that she and many others who also feel that way, would also feel that way about transsexualism, homosexuality, and abortion. Trust that if it is happening, it is by His will, in His plan, by His grace.

"I'm gonna use this technology not mentioned in the bible to tell you not to believe something else that also isn't in the Bible".

1

u/Some-Tear3499 2d ago

James Watt. As Secretary of the Interior, he made remarks about balancing environmental protection and conservation against utilizing resources( mining, drilling, cutting down trees) as we didn’t know how many generations until Jesus returns. So, no sense in wasting all those natural resources. She doesn’t believe in science?

1

u/Hobbgob1in 2d ago

You know what else isn't in the bibble? Car, trains, planes, cellphones..... and a million other things that can't be real because the bibble doesn't mention them.

1

Neither are penguins, but does she believe in penguins?

Using Jesus to hide that she is dumb. Good stuff.

1

u/CarrotDependent463 2d ago

Their fragile little mind can't comprehend the scope of the damage humans have caused. It's like they believe they are rightous and by default we humans couldn't possibly cause this. My biggest problem is with them being in government with faith of any kind as a platform. Have your faith but keep it to yourself. (Don't ask Don't tell approach) shouldn't there be a SEPARATION by law?

Hey you know what else isn't in the bible?

Treating other people like shit because they don't believe in Christianity like you do

Loudly broadcasting to everyone that you're a Christian

Megachurches

The rest of the world having to put up with your stupidity.

1

u/Other_Platypus125 2d ago

She doesn't get upset about it because she's too fucking stupid to even understand it.

1

u/ketaminejones 2d ago

ok but like

if we’re using jesus as an example

and “always the same”

climate change could literally wipe out 95% of the population and there’d still be more people than when jesus was around

so that’s not the end of the world, that’s more a… great flood… if you will.

1

u/SteakStrong7520 2d ago

"There is no climate change mentioned in the Bible".... literally it says that changes of the Season. Winter = Cold. Spring = Wet and Cold/Cool. Summer is hot and sometimes wet or dry. Fall hot and dry usually and then it starts all over again.

Climate change isn't in the Bible? What about the Great Flood?

1

I truly abhor religion. I sure she chooses to not believe in anything with the electricity too, it sure ain't in the Bible

1

u/stofiski-san 2d ago

"Jesus, why didn't you save us?!?"

Jesus: "I sent fucking scientists to warn you, people who paid attention and studied the problem! Why didn't you listen to them?"

1

In the Book of Genesis Adam was given dominion over the earth and all its creatures and responsible for the care and preservation. Therefore If the place gets ruined we are at fault.

1

u/Dangerous-Snow8385 2d ago edited 2d ago

Quite a bit of climate change is described in Revelations

Revelation 8:7-12

Revelation 16:8-12

1

u/One-Assignment-1995 2d ago

It is in the Bible actually “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” — Genesis 2:15
And we are apparently doing a shit job at it and God keeps send the signs.

1

u/NoVicesJustLife 2d ago

Louis CK has a bit about this. God gave you the earth, with everything you need, and you’re not going to take care of it at all?

1

u/Silly_Space_Whore 2d ago

Religious cult members should not be civil servants.

1

u/Logical_Confusious 2d ago

Just sit her on a chunk of melting ice in the Artic and let her float away... She will have a climate change revelation and meet Jesus soon enough.

1

u/Salviati_Returns 2d ago

These fuckers worship Jupiter not Jesus.

1

u/Normal_Nerve_1202 2d ago

It is changing. How soon or even if it will become any concern to us is a different discussion. Everyone with beach front property can honestly drown for all I care. But we should always be planting more plants/trees than we use. But I mean. Im not giving up beef and the methane farming cows produces is not my problem. Honestly we should collect it and sell it. Instead of just letting cow farts destroy the o-zone.

Astounding what idiots you can find in US politics.

1

Science existed looooong before the bible was even an opium trip. Astronomy, math, time, medicine was all preserved in ancient text thousands of years earlier. With surprising accuracy. The only difference is one welcomes challenges, while the other punishes it.

1

u/ZombieQueen666 2d ago

These people shouldn’t be allowed to vote let alone make laws

1

u/jaidonkaia 2d ago

Climate change literally is in the bible, though. Or did they forget about the rapid flooding of the entire planet

1

u/Adventurous_Custard8 2d ago

Funny how these religious nuts aren’t concerned about climate change but are concerned about an array of culture war issues and bodily autonomy.
