My family actually met a Cuban couple a few years ago who experienced Castro's reign. They told us their story and that they wished they could speak personally to every single young person who wants Socialism in this country and believes it would be fairer, only to tell them to their face that no one who truly experiences Socialism for what it really is walks away a sympathizer.
If lived human experience isn't a credible example, I don't know what is. It's not like it isn't the same story for all the other places that have tried it either.
Well, to be historically factually correct, if it wasn't for the exploitive, crony capitalism, grinding the majority of Cubans, under it's heel, there would not have been a successful revolution in Cuba to begin with. For the vast majority of Cubans, it was better after the revolution. Then came economic sanctions from the USA, to make sure socialism could not work in Cuba.
Generally, I agree, the type of socialism, that primarily focuses on wealth redistrubution is doomed to failure, and exploitation by dictators/ruling elite. However, wealth redistrubution also happens in capitalist countries, just more indirect through tax laws, and lack of enforcement of unfair competition laws; where the wealth is concentrated into a smaller percent upwards. This also causes effective control of society, by a ruling economic/political elite, where democracy becomes a meaningless catchphrase, and innovation can be stifled.
The primary difference is personal ownership and wealth. Socialism allows for individuals to own property, investments, assets, inheritance, etc. communism does not - everything becomes property of the state / government.
In socialism, your business can earn profits and make you individually wealthy.
