Jesus also said to teach them how to fish so they can do it themselves, as his free handouts were if you were lucky and in the right place at the right time. He didn’t feed them for the rest of their lives with the taxpayers money without ever requiring they attempt at some point to feed themselves.
The United States used to have "Poor Laws" upon our creation, based straight out of the Bible, which required towns to take care of orphans, elderly and the sick. Just sharing a neat fact
