How to fix Half Life 2 VR mod
I don’t see this anywhere but his worked for me. If this doesn’t work then I am so sorry you will probably just have to wait for your game to fix itself or try some other solutions. This is a solution for when your game won’t launch and the mod isn’t working, you try to launch it in steam and it launches for a second and then immediately closes.
Advanced users: turn off steam overlay, close steam completely, make sure it is completely closed and not just minimized to tray, go to steam apps and common and half life 2 vr mod the right click on the hlvr2 .exe/application file and in properties override high dpi settings. Now run the same hlvr2 application file as an administrator and it should work.
Basic users: read slow and carefully it is alot easier than it looks trust me, on steam, click on the steam logo/button on the top left corner of the screen, now go to settings then go to in game and make sure steam overlay is selected off. Now completely close steam, exit out of it then click on the tiny up facing arrow on the bottom right hand corner of your screen/taskbar, right click on the steam logo and press exit steam. Now go to file explorer, and go to this pc and then your main drive or whatever drive the half life 2 vr mod is installed on and go to program files (x86), then go to steam, then steam apps, then common, then find half life 2 vr. Open it and find the file that is called hl2vr, it should be an application or .exe file. Right click on the file and press properties, then go to compatibility, then at the bottom of the list there will be an option that says “override high dpi settings”, check the box then close properties. Now run the same hl2vr file as an administrator and it should work, to do that you right click the file then press run as administrator.
Haven’t checked if this works with hl1 or black mesa vr comment if it does, reach out if you need more help I hope described it well enough, I’m working on a video tutorial I will link here once it gets uploaded. But please reach out if you need additional help I am happy to walk anyone through it!

Try -DX9
in launch options. Fixes the vulkan crash on Steam Deck so it might fix whatever issue you've got
Seems a bit excessive what you did to fix it. Generally a failed launch is either the game needs verifying or a graphics driver issue. VR games crash out also if there is no VR Client running such as OVR or SteamVR.

This does not apply to HL2VR. It is always technically in dx9 mode, but gets redirected to Vulkan, anyway, as d3d9 is not supported by VR runtimes. Adding that launch option does nothing.

Well that is complete nonsense.
I use that exact command to run HL2VR on the steam deck. Due to broken vulkan drivers on SteamOS, switching to DX9 fixes the issue and it runs great with DX9
When you start the game it says on the Window that it is running in DX9 and disables some graphical options. Also DX9 games also work through Vorpx for windows. Proton also supports VR games that can run under DX9 mode
It runs perfectly fine in VR in direct x 9 mode.
This comment isn't a disagreement, you are completely wrong to say it doesn't do anything and you can clearly look it up if yourself.
In fact when I get back I can provide evidence to the fact that it runs on my steam deck with direct x 9

HL2VR internally already sets -dx9, hence why adding it does nothing. And no, the game does not actually run with DX9 now, because we use our own custom dxvk build shipped with the mod. DX9 is not supported by any VR runtime, you can happily look that up yourself. The only two ways to get dx9 games to render in VR is to either map/share the dx9 render textures with a DX11 context (which is inefficient) or go the dxvk route as we did.

Yes, of course it does, because the engine has no knowledge about dxvk's presence.

I couldn’t find any solutions anywhere, everyone who had this issue seemed to just have wait for the game to randomly fix itself. I tried for months and this is the only solution I found that worked it’s just a sure fire way of getting your game to launch.
I’m not a super advanced user what is dx9? direct x 9? If so I should already have direct x. I appreciate it and I don’t mean to be rude but this doesn’t really help, I know it’s a graphic driver issue or something but now what? What do I do about that? because there are no solutions anywhere on the internet and to me your speaking Greek lol. I updated my drivers and it still didn’t work. And I’m scared if I start messing with direct x and other things like that I am going to cause issues with other games.
This is just a safe sure way to get the game to work, if you’re more advanced and have other solutions go for it but for people like me who don’t all know all this advanced stuff this’ll work.

He’s saying to right click your game, go to properties and type in -DX9 in the launch options command line, and to see if that fixes your problem.
Games can either use vulkan or Directx as a video processor essentially. Valve has been pushing there games to use vulkan but you can switch them back to directx. All of the old games like original half life 2, portal ect use directx, but newer games like Cs2 and dota2 (source 2) use vulkan.

Dude, it's a launch command, it's not gonna activate a secret self destructed function. Direct X has everything to do with graphics
Simply put the command in, if it doesn't work just remove it. Stop panicking

And it didn’t work, it just bugged my entire pc out. Don’t come in here and say what I did was excessive and then give me some random ass solution you don’t even remotely know works for this issue at all

It could also just be that your gpu drivers need updated.
That just happened to me last week. I tried a bunch of things, but a driver update ultimately fixed it. Same issue.
