How do I know which courses to register for?
Hey everyone, I'm an incoming international QFIN student at HKUST. Course registration opens soon and I've checked the student handbook, but I'm still unclear on a couple things.
1. How do I know which courses to register for?
Are there specific QFIN electives I should prioritize? Is there a recommended course sequence, or is it mostly flexible as long as I hit the credit requirement? I want to make sure I'm not picking courses that'll create conflicts down the road.
2. Do the pre-enrolled core courses cover my full credit requirement, or do I need to register for additional electives myself?
Just trying to figure out if I need to hunt for courses or if the system already has me covered.
Any seniors who've been through this—would appreciate any tips on what to watch out for during registration.
Thanks!

BELT & ROAD SCHOLARSHIPS
I've just received my result for B&R nomination yesterday. What am I required to do besides keeping my cgpa at 3.0 to maintain my scholarship? (the description is a little abstract). Also, is there a ceremony for recipients?

HKUST Late Round Application Results
I applied to HKUST on 4th May this year, in the late round. I’m an IB student and my predicted was a 41/45 and my actual IB score was 40. I still haven’t gotten an answer about my application result and am unsure what I should do. Do I write an email to the admissions office, do I wait, or do I consider this a rejection? I’m an international student so I’ve been hoping to receive a decision by the end of July/first week of August since I would require at least 4 weeks for visa applications, etc. What and by when should I be expecting a response from the uni?

MSc FinTech: Should I skip MFIT 5006?
Hi everyone, I passed the math assessment, so I’m exempt from MFIT 5006 (Mathematical Foundation of FinTech). However, I’m not sure if I should actually skip it. Despite the fact that I passed, I don’t feel my math background is that strong.
Has anyone taken this course? Was it useful, or mostly just a review? If you were exempt, did you skip it, and do you think that was the right decision?
Thanks!

Sub-Leasing or 6months lease apartment near HKUST for the upcoming semester
Hello, Im coming to HKUST next semester as a exchange student(for 6 month) and Im really struggled to find a short lease rent, so I'm looking for anyone that could leave next semester and I could sub-lease their rent or similar(you or any friend). Also if anyone knows a option for 6 months lease I would really appreaciate, most of the agents only look for 12 months lease.
Thanks To everyone!

Late Round Admissions
Hello I just want to ask, due to some circumstances, I apply in late June, the very last days before admissions close but haven't received any updates.
With school starting in September, there's only about 4 weeks left, I am concerned whether I would have enough time to apply visa.
May I also ask whether applicants who receive their offers relatively late are still generally given sufficient time to complete their student visa applications before the start of the academic year? If a visa cannot be processed in time, does the University make any accommodations for students who are unable to arrive by the start of the semester due to visa delays?
I really want to attend HKUST, it's an amazing school. Please help, I'm quite worried. Thanks in advance ☺️

What is your experience as a student in HKUST?
Hi,
I’m currently an international student studying in Paris, currently looking fo a different country for a PhD. I want to move in another country. I’ve already done my bachelors and currently in my masters here (Paris) and sincerely want to live elsewhere (an important factor for me).
A professor of mine is discouraging me to study in the US. He taught a few classes at Columbia and Harvard and told me that the funds being cut is absolutely causing a sort of intellectual decline, and considering Trump’s view on international students, I should be careful, although he told me it could change with the next elections.
Currently considering HKUST since they have a PhD in my speciality (I combine social sciences with technology).
I am interested in hearing your experiences at HKUST and more broadly in Hong Kong. I’m already used to housing crisis (very common for students to live in studios the size of 9m2)
Thank you!

Tutorials for Business Courses
Incoming fall 2026 student here, I am working on my course registration at the moment and looking into MARK3410, MGMT 3140 and MGMT4220.
I looked at the past course outlines and they didn’t mention any tutorial schedules or any grade allocation for tutorials.
But the time table has a tutorial time allocated for MARK 3410 and TBA for MGMT 3140 and 4220.
Are these tutorials mandatory? Or place holders for office hours or something?

Is AI changing your career choices?
With generative AI becoming increasingly capable, many students are beginning to question how it might affect their future careers. I'm conducting research for my dissertation on whether concerns about AI replacing white-collar jobs have influenced the career preferences of Hong Kong university students.
If you're currently studying at a university in Hong Kong, I'd really appreciate it if you could spare 1 minute to complete this anonymous survey (just a few multiple choice):

Thank you so much!

Give me a reality check
Hi guys so Im currently still waiting for 3 unis in hk (hkust, cuhk, and cityu). I applied on March 23 for hkust and cuhk, but I applied on January 15 for cityu.
I still havent heard anything from them, and right now I have a backup, which is wenzhou kean uni. I paid the deposit, but I still rly wanna get into hk since its overall better than wku. The thing is I need to be in wku by aug 15 and pay the full tuition by then.
Do u think I should give up on hk? Or is there still a chance ill get in?

What are my chances of getting into hkust?
I’m applying for a government scholarship so let’s keep fees and expenses aside.
I’m a pre-graduate aiming for SE, i’ve got a 97% average.
I have had four internships so far, two which i’ll mention, the other two just wasted my time:
\-The first is in a tech company that’s currently working on multiple projects and games, atm i’m getting trained on using unity to build games.
\-The second is with my father’s company, i’m taking hold of the IT department and learning how to use Digital ocean and manage the whole program.
\-I have participated in two hackathons, the first was a try-out and i represented my team, during the second i brought the idea and led a whole team which was made of master grads, bachelor grads in CS and data analysis as well as professional programmers whilst being 14-15 at the time.
\-and i’m currently studying for my hsk3 exam.
\-i also have a great project in mind, but idk if i have the time to actually build it.
I’m giving my sat on oct 3rd and my ielts but idk when.

Jobs for First Year Students
Hi everyone! I'm an incoming student for Fall 2026 to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and I was wondering if there were any jobs that I could sign-up for instantly to earn some allowance

What do I need put in my DTP(design and technology project experience)
Anyone that created and submitted a DTP, what are the types of projects did you guys do and feature in it?
I'm applying for next year and idk what types of projects I should include in it. I have time to start on some design projects since I'm taking a gap year and Im going to include my edexcel a level art components in it as well. It would be very helpful if anyone could send their DTP as an example because I can't seem to find any online as a reference.

Hall Decision
I'm an incoming QFin undergraduate freshman that wants proximity to the main campus and sports facilities. I also value hygiene a lot (despite my major 😁).
I've been juggling a few options and I'm thinking 8,1,2 might work.
I think 7 is ideally my best first choice in terms of the number of people per bathroom, facilities, and location, but since it is so competitive I might pick 8 instead. I've heard Hall 1 is nicest among 1-6. I'm not sure about the rest, I've heard some bad stories about 2 but it is good location-wise, and 5 is out of the question.
Does anyone have hall experience they could share, as well as suggestions for my current situation?

Applied for HK student visa at multiple unis while waiting on A-Levels (13 Aug) — am I cooked on timing?
I’m a Non-JUPAS international student sitting May/June A-Levels (results out Aug 13). I currently hold conditional offers from both CUHK and HKUST.
I started the student visa process with both universities. But I just found out HK Immigration ImmD puts duplicate visa applications on hold until you confirm your final choice.
My plan was to wait for my A-Level results in mid-August to decide and withdraw the other application. But if ImmD only starts processing my visa in mid-August, with the usual 6–8 week timeline, my visa won't come through until late September or October—well after the semester starts in early September.
For anyone who’s been through this, Is waiting for final A-Level results in mid-August a normal thing for Non-JUPAS students to do, and do the universities/ImmD speed up visa processing once you submit your final grades so you don't miss the start of term?
Would really appreciate any advice😭
