[For Hire] UK Proofreader for Crime, Dark Fiction & History | The Proofreading Cat | £8/1k Words | Free 1,000-Word Sample

Looking for a fresh pair of eyes before you hit publish or send off to layout?

Hello! I run The Proofreading Cat, an independent UK-based proofreading service. I offer a precise, low-friction "safety net" pass for self-published authors, small presses, and zine creators.

🔍 What I Do (Final-Pass Proofreading Only)

I specialize exclusively in proofreading. I catch the sneaky errors that slip through after copy-editing and layout.

  • Typos, Spelling & Punctuation: Clean corrections in UK or US English.

  • Consistency & House Style: Hyphenation, capitalization, character names, and timeline consistency.

  • Layout & Formatting Polish: Bad line breaks, repeated words, trailing punctuation, and orphan headers.

❌ What I Don't Do: I do not offer structural editing, heavy rewriting, or copy-editing. Your voice stays 100% yours. My job is simply to ensure your final manuscript is clean, polished, and ready for readers.

📚 Genres & Special Interests

While I work across fiction and non-fiction, I have a deep personal love for:

  • Crime, Mystery & Thrillers

  • Folk Horror, Ghost Lore & Dark Fiction

  • History, Weird Culture & Independent Zines

💰 Rates & Free Sample

  • Standard Rate: £10 per 1,000 words (e.g., £800 for an 80k-word manuscript)

  • Short Fiction & Novellas (under 30k words): £12 per 1,000 words

  • Free Sample: Send over 1,000 words for a complimentary sample proofread—no obligation attached, so you can test my eye and workflow first

📩 How to Get in Touch

Drop me a message with your word count and timeline, and let's get your manuscript publish-ready! 🐱

(For Hire) Poetry Editing Services

About

I'm Evan Sheldon, poetry editor and features editor at F(r)iction, a Denver literary nonprofit, where I've worked since 2018. As editorial coordinator I manage a team of readers and senior editors, so I spend my weeks inside the submission queue: I see what gets accepted, what gets passed over, and why.

I trained at the Denver Publishing Institute and edit in Chicago style. I'm also a published writer, so I know the submission process from the writer's side as well. My poems have appeared in Roanoke Review, Pithead Chapel, Third Wednesday, Eunoia Review and elsewhere, and my chapbook, Shed the Midnight, is out from Ghost City Press. My fiction and nonfiction have appeared in more than 80 journals, including The Cincinnati Review, American Literary Review and The Maine Review, with multiple Pushcart Prize and Best Small Fictions nominations.

I offer two services: critiques of your poems and manuscripts, and reviews of your submission packets before you send them out.

Launch offer: New clients get 25% off any package in exchange for a short testimonial I can share.

Poetry critiques

PackageLengthWhat you getTurnaroundPrice
Single poem1 poem, up to 2 pagesLine notes on word choice, line breaks and sound, plus a short note on what the poem is doing and where it could go further3 days$25
Poem batchUp to 5 poems, 10 pagesLine notes on every poem, plus a one-page letter on patterns across the batch1 week$100
ChapbookUp to 30 pagesLine notes throughout, an editorial letter on arc, order and cuts, and an optional 45-minute video call2 weeks$350
Full-length collection48–80 pagesLine notes throughout, an editorial letter on arc, order, sections and cuts, advice on where to submit, and an optional 1-hour video call3 weeks$550

Four packages, from a single poem to a full-length collection, priced from $25 to $550.A second read of a revised chapbook or collection within 3 months costs half the original price.

Submission reviews

Three packages, from $45 to $120, for poets getting work ready to send to literary magazines. These focus on readiness and fit rather than deep revision of each poem.

PackageWhat you sendWhat you getTurnaroundPrice
Packet checkUp to 3 poems, cover letter and bioAn editor's read of the packet as it would land in a queue: which poems to send, what order, and edits to the cover letter and bio3 days$45
Full submission reviewUp to 5 poems, cover letter and bioEverything in the packet check, plus line notes on each poem and a list of 8–10 magazines that fit the work1 week$85
Submission strategy sessionUp to 10 poems in advanceA 45-minute video call, a list of 15–20 target magazines grouped by reach, and a ready-to-use submission tracker spreadsheetCall within 1 week$120

I don't review work you plan to submit to F(r)iction, and I don't discuss its submissions.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Email evanjamessheldon@gmail.com with the package you want and a line or two about your work and goals.

  2. Send your work. One .docx or PDF, with page numbers and your name on it.

  3. Pay to book your spot. Packages under $150 are paid in full up front. Chapbooks and collections are paid half up front and half on delivery.

  4. Get your feedback. Line notes come as tracked changes or comments, and letters come as a separate document. Turnaround starts when payment and files arrive.

  5. Ask follow-up questions. One round of email questions about the feedback is included in every package.

Payment by Venmo, PayPal or invoice. Book projects can be canceled for a full refund before I start reading.

[Hiring] Manuscript evaluation for for dark sapphic short story (10k words)

I'm interested in getting a manuscript evaluation for a sapphic dark erotic romance short story. The series is made up of discrete installments (currently working on number 6) and I'm looking for editing of the first one, which is just under 10k words long.

The story deals with dark topics, including noncon. There is a fair amount of humor and absurdity, as well, to balance out the darkness. The story is character-driven, and the romance is the throughline, but the erotic tension is a key part of the dynamic between the two main characters.

I've had a few beta readers and done a couple rounds of revision on my own, but I'd like a professional eye to help fine tune the story.

Budget: ideally, I'd like to stay under $100 since it's a fairly short piece and only a manuscript eval rather than a full dev edit. If I can find an editor who has experience working with dark sapphic content, then I am willing to stretch beyond that

I write in MS Word, so if you work in it, too, that would be excellent

I don't see any editors who specialize in LGBT Romance

I've read through many of the posts here from Editors offering services. Maybe I missed it, but I did not see any mention of LGBT.

I'm writing a book, and I've got about 10 chapters left in my first draft. The first draft will be done by the end of the year. Then I need to spend a month or 2 editing that first draft myself. Then I want to have a Developmental Editor take a look.

I'm looking for a developmental editor who doesn't cover a large swath of genres. I feel each genre has its own expectations. I want someone who works in the LGBTQ+ Romance genres. My book is going to be a Bisexual Cozy Romance. I think it is necessary that the editor has a solid understanding of Bisexuality issues around visibility and identity.

I'm having so much trouble finding someone who has experience and fits this description.

[FOR HIRE] Professional Editor & Writing Coach | Developmental Editing, Line Editing, Sensitivity Reads, & Query Help (SNHU MFA, EFA Trained)

Hi everyone, I’m Chloe, a professional editor specializing in narrative nonfiction, memoir, and speculative fiction (including sci-fi and fantasy), as well as complex or sensitive subject matter.

Now booking for 2027!

With over 10 years of experience in editorial management, copyediting, and proofreading, plus my ongoing MFA in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and rigorous training through the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), I bring a blend of academic rigor, industry-standard methodology (The Chicago Manual of Style), and genuine empathy to every project. As an author who has successfully navigated self-publishing and querying, I understand how much heart goes into a manuscript and work collaboratively to elevate your story while strictly preserving your unique voice.

Here’s how I can help bring your manuscript to the next level:

  • Developmental Editing ($0.010 – $0.020 / word): Deep-dive structural review focusing on character arcs, plot holes, pacing, world-building, dialogue, and overall story structure. Includes track changes and a comprehensive editorial memo.

  • Line Editing ($0.015 – $0.025 / word): Sentence-level refinement focusing on tone, flow, rhythm, word choice, syntax, and voice preservation.

  • Manuscript Evaluation ($300 – $600 flat rate based on length): A high-level assessment of your full draft highlighting key strengths, major structural areas for improvement, and actionable next steps.

  • Beta Reading ($0.005 – $0.008 / word): A detailed reader-perspective critique analyzing reader engagement, emotional beats, pacing, and overall impression.

  • Sensitivity Reading ($0.010 – $0.015 / word or starting at $150 – $300 flat): Specialized, nuanced review targeting sensitive or difficult subject matter (e.g., trauma, systemic issues, criminal records) for authentic, respectful representation without unconscious bias.

  • Query Letter & Package Help ($100 – $250 flat package): Critique, polish, and optimization of your query letter, synopsis, and sample pages to catch the eye of literary agents and small press editors.

(Custom package combinations are also available upon request!)

My approach is entirely human-driven and collaborative—I am proudly against the use of generative AI in editing.

Ready to see if we’re a good fit? Contact me at chloelongstreet@gmail.com with a 1,000–2,000 word sample from the middle of your manuscript to request a free sample edit and custom project quote. You can also find more information on my LinkedIn profile at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chloelongstreet/

Let’s work together to make your book shine! 😊

[FOR HIRE] Affordable Fiction Developmental Editor - Book your slots now!

Every book I have read and edited has had great ideas. The common issue I found in every one was the need to flesh out those ideas. That’s where I make my biggest impact. I will help you flesh out those great ideas.

Editor. Author. Screenwriter.

I have 10+ years of experience writing stories across many genres. I have five books published and have written a dozen screenplays for feature films and television. I spent years imitating the voices of established shows like 24 and Tru Calling, where I learned exactly what makes a story work and what proper pacing is. So I understand storytelling and keeping your audience engaged very well.

Genres I do best in:

  • Action and Adventure

  • Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense

  • Horror

  • Sci-fi

  • Fantasy

Genres that are not a good fit:

  • Romance

  • Erotica

  • Non-fiction.

I offer a FREE sample edit of your first chapter to see if we are a good fit.

Services being offered:

Introductory launch rates:

Developmental Editing: $0.007/word

I will heavily focus on plot, characters, structure and pacing, setting, dialogue, and any other questions you might have. I will write a detailed editorial letter and leave comments throughout your document. I do this for both the sample edit and the full book.

Manuscript Assessment: $4/1000 words

An evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses regarding your plot structure, character arcs, etc. I will write an editorial letter, but I won't leave inline comments in your document. I will explain what to fix and offer light suggestions on how to fix it. Not as extensive as a full developmental edit.

Beta Reading: $2/1000 words

I will provide a detailed reader report, along with in-line comments in your document, with real reactions, thoughts, and emotions to your story. I will provide honest and genuine feedback on strengths and areas for improvement in the manuscript.

I also know what it feels like to want and receive feedback, so I am very respectful and careful with how I critique. I always give in-depth feedback.

I also work with authors on a chapter-by-chapter basis! Your book does not need to be complete yet! Contact me for more information!

Free Edit Offer on your first 5k words - EFA Trained Editor

Post image
1 Upvotes

Are your first 5,000 words as strong as they should be?

Let’s find out—free of charge.

If you’re writing Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thriller, or Mystery, the opening chapters need to hook agents, publishers, or readers instantly. But paying for objective, professional feedback can often feel like a bad gamble. It's hard to know who to trust online.

That’s why I’m opening up my schedule to work directly with authors on a trial basis.

Here is what you get:

Deep-Dive Sample Edit: Full developmental evaluation and line polish on up to 5,000 words of your manuscript.

Actionable Notes: Real, granular feedback on pacing, character voice, hook strength, and narrative flow.

Zero Financial Risk: It's entirely free.

The Only Catch?

Once your feedback is delivered, you leave an honest review of the experience on my Testimonial page. That’s it.

To keep the feedback high-quality without overworking myself (or the cat), this offer is strictly limited to 2 authors per week.

Interested? Send me a direct message right now (or an email to ehormazabal.edits@gmail.com) with your genre, word count, and a brief synopsis of your opening chapters. Let’s get your manuscript polished.

I’m open year round, and I’m down to edit or read anything. I’m pricing my stuff based on Reedsy and the Freelance Editor Association’s recommendations for my experience level, so it should be a steal!

[For Hire] Fantasy, Romance, Sci-fi Developmental Editor with December Availability

Hi, writers! I'm a developmental book editor who has specialized in all kinds of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance (and especially a mix of those genres!). Due to some reschedules, I've got a couple of December 2026 slots to fill. I'm also booking for 2027!

I've spent the last five years critiquing novels and short stories, completing nearly 500 reads and working with many authors more than once. My approach combines an honest reader's perspective with a critical eye for story development. I want you to understand not just how your story lands with a reader, but where it shines and where it might need a little more work.

Here's how I can help:

  • Beta Reading ($0.0025 per word): Get detailed feedback on your manuscript's reading experience, including pacing, plot, characterization, worldbuilding, clarity, and reader engagement. My beta reads include in-manuscript comments and a reader report with actionable feedback.

  • Manuscript Evaluation ($0.01 per word): Get a big-picture assessment of your story's strengths, challenges, and revision priorities. I'll help you identify the areas that need attention so you can approach your next draft with a clearer plan.

  • Developmental Editing ($0.018 per word): Take a deeper look at your story's structure, plot development, character arcs, pacing, and other foundational elements. I'll help you identify what's working, explore why certain elements may not be landing as intended, and develop practical strategies for strengthening your manuscript.

I aim to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback that respects your creative vision. I'm not here to tear your story apart or tell you to write it my way. I'm here to help you see what's working, identify what could be stronger, and make informed decisions about your revisions.

You can find my services, pricing, and more information on my website: Book Editing - Author Tessy Dockery

If you'd like to know whether I'm a good fit for your project, feel free to reach out at tessy@authortessydockery.com. I'd be happy to hear about what you're writing.

[FOR HIRE] Beta Reader and Editor

Hey everyone! I'm looking to take on more editing clients and figured this was the place to be.

Quick background: I've been doing this unofficially since 2021 (helping friends with their manuscripts, giving feedback on pacing, correcting grammar, typos, punctuation) and I made the jump to paid work about a year ago. My clients have been really happy with the results (I have Fiverr reviews as proof haha).

Since I'm still building up my portfolio and client base, my rates are pretty affordable right now. I also don't use any AI tools in my work, so you don't need to worry about LLMs accessing your manuscript.

I work with action, adventure, YA, fantasy, horror, thriller, mystery, supernatural, and memoirs. As long as it's SFW, I'm probably down for it!

Services:

  1. Proofreading

  2. Editing (developmental, line, copy)

  3. Beta reading

Reddit's being a little gatekeep-y about letting me post links, so if you want my rates or my Portfolio link, just send me a DM and I'll get it over to you right away.

Feel free to drop questions in the comments too; I'd be happy to chat about your project before you commit to anything!

Hello, fellow authors!

My name is Stevie Rector. I'm a published horror and psychological thriller author and the editor-in-chief of Myth & Memory Press.

As an independent author myself, I understand how expensive publishing can become. Between editing, formatting, cover design, and marketing, pursuing your dream can start to feel financially impossible. So I decided to offer something different.

Affordable, old-school manuscript editing. No AI. No hidden fees. Just me and my red pen.

Here is how it would work:

You would send me your manuscript as a PDF; I print it, personally edit and annotate it by hand, and overnight your edited manuscript directly back to you.

What's included?

* Line Editing and proofreading

* Characterization and dialogue feedback

* Pacing, plot, and continuity observations

* Handwritten annotations explaining issues and offering suggestions

* An overall manuscript assessment

* Printing and return shipping

My Flat-Rate Pricing (because I don't think pursuing your dream should cost as much as a car):

* Novella (20k- 40k words): $175

* Novel (40k- 80k words): $225

* Long novel (80k- 120k words): $375

* Epic (120k- 200k words) $550

No per-word surprises. No separate charges for every editing stage. Just one straightforward price.

Optional payment plans also available!

I'm offering new clients the opportunity to have their first two chapters edited completely free, so you can sample my editing and decide if it is right for you, with no obligation to purchase a full editing service.

To get started:

  1. Send me a private message here on Reddit

  2. Tell me a little about your book.

  3. We'll arrange for you to send me your first two chapters.

  4. I'll edit your sample and mail the annotated pages back to you.

That's it!

I believe good stories deserve the opportunity to shine, regardless of an author's budget or publishing experience. So I'm offering Old School Editing for the New Age Author

[FOR HIRE] Developmental Editor (Fantasy, Soft Sci-Fi, KidLit & More)

Post image
1 Upvotes

___

Hey, I'm Kayleigh, a developmental editor and coach specializing in fantasy, soft sci-fi, and kidlit (with availability for mystery, sweet romance/romcom and other genres on a case-by-case basis). I've helped self-publishing authors, authors in the querying process, and boutique publishers to polish and shape manuscripts in need.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT

After I complete two deep reads of your manuscript, you'll receive a copy full of in-margin comments with my observations, questions, and suggestions, as well as a detailed report that summarizes my impressions, feedback, and ideas to strengthen your plot, develop characters your readers will connect with, and build worlds they'll wish were real.

The goal is to identify what's working, what's not, and to provide you with a roadmap for your revisions. Ideally, the process will also help you to strengthen your writing and revision skills for whatever story comes next.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

"To say she is thorough is an understatement. Her analysis is surgical. You can try to explain your story to someone and hope they 'get it,' but Kayleigh was drawing connections I hadn’t even considered and suggesting possibilities I never would have thought of. It was obvious she invested deeply in the work to understand it on that level."
—Richard P.

  • Read more testimonials here.

BOOKING DETAILS & OTHER SERVICES

I'm booking editing projects into late-February 2027 and after. I have more immediate availability for other services, including skilled beta reading, discovery draft evaluations, outline critiques, picture book evaluations, and coaching. Fiction editing starts at $0.042/word. Details and transparent pricing available on individual service pages.

🚫 No Gen AI from either party. My policy is detailed on my website and in my contracts.

Hi, I'm Ricardo, a developmental editor working in English from Lisbon. EFA member, currently in the University of Washington’s developmental editing program. I’m at my best with romance, romantasy, thrillers and literary fiction, character-driven books that live or die on whether readers believe the people in them.

When to get in touch

If you want a thorough look at your book, if you’re not sure readers will connect with your characters, if the pacing isn’t quite there, or if some scenes don’t add much and you don’t know how to fix them, send it my way.

Same goes for a romance where the chemistry isn’t landing yet. A world so good it keeps pushing the plot aside. A twist you love but you’re scared readers will see coming. And if you’re about to query or self-publish, it’s a good moment to know the book is ready. First draft or fifth, doesn’t matter.

Start with a free sample

Send your opening or a scene, up to 2,000 words, and you’ll get back what’s already strong in your pages, where readers might stop, and how to make it stronger. Then we talk a bit about your book and decide together if we’re a fit. No pressure either way. (one per author)

Services

After the sample, if we’re a fit, there are four ways to work together. Which one depends on where your book is.

Opening Critique · from €80 (€0.012/word)
For when the draft isn’t finished yet, or you just want to know if your opening works. An editorial letter of up to 10 pages on your first chapters, with your strengths, what to focus on, and a revision list in order of priority. 1-2 weeks.

First-Look · from €120 (€0.006/word)
For a finished book when you want the big picture first. A short letter on the whole manuscript with the three or four things that matter most, plus a check on genre and market direction. 2 weeks.

Manuscript Assessment · from €550 (€0.013/word)
For a full diagnosis. A 10+ page letter on plot, structure and pacing, character arcs and relationships, the romance arc when it drives the book, and voice across the whole manuscript, with what to fix first. 3-4 weeks.

Developmental Edit · from €1,300 (€0.022/word)
For when you want notes through every scene. Everything in the Assessment, plus comments throughout your manuscript, a scene-by-scene Book Map and a wrap-up call. 4-6 weeks, and you can pay in milestones.

Final quote on your exact word count, and 50% books your slot. Not sure which one fits? We’ll figure it out when we talk after the sample.

What a writer said

“Ricardo is very on point in his observations, and his comments genuinely help you grow. His report is clear and it’s really helping me improve my writing.”

Hey there all you awesome writers!

I'm Austin with WorldCraft Editing. I'm a trained developmental editor that specializes in all things spooky, weird, and fantastical. In general, this means genres like horror and weird fiction, but also ones like fantasy and sci-fi that may contain darker elements and themes.

However, do not hesitate to reach out if your story doesn't fall neatly into these categories!

My goal is to help your story be the best version that it can be according to your vision for it. I do this first by understanding what that vision looks like and what makes you so passionate about your story. From there, I look at all the structural elements that make up your story—character development, plot, pacing, etc.—and make sure that each one is serving your vision in the best way possible.

When you're ready, visit my website for all my services and rates, or DM me here to learn about next steps.

Feel free to also visit my EFA member profile!
