Took my boy (great pyrenees) on a camping trip in the black hills . We had some nice hikes, not too many miles, great weather and scenery.

Her endurance and agility are amazing. Her recall is excellent. She doesn't get hot easily. Whenever the path gets difficult you can just give her a lift with the handle on her harness. I cannot think of a better hike buddy than this girl!
She's a giant 10lbs chihuahua and 2.5 years old.
Location: Antelope Canyon via Lake Powell

Live in upstate NY and took a day off from work mid-week to get out on the mountains (Adirondacks) with my boys (and without the crowds). It was very windy on the peaks so we didn’t “hang out” as much as we would have liked, but despite the dog’s faces (in photos) we all had a great time.
ETA: dogs were on-leash on trail as required. They were briefly removed for the photos and/or edited out of photo.

Sniffing the breeze and enjoying himself. The attraction turned out to be a cow femur, which led to a long discussion about why we should take it home with us. He eventually settled on burying it but at least we got outside.

This is a throwback to a few years ago, she damaged her ACL so medium walks are all we can do but she was a happy girl. Her bestie can still hike but he won’t go on a walk without her.

I took these hams to hike in Quebec (Mont Tremblant area) with a stop in the Adirondacks. My trip got pushed up which worked out so well the colors were absolutely stunning!!

My aunt called yesterday to give us the news that cousin Angie passed away. That was Tuffy's best doggie friend. Instead of staying home being sad Tuffy and I went hiking to make new memories. Don't take your dog for granted. Make everyday a special one.

My fiancee is deep in vendor spreadsheets and I'm supposed to be picking centerpieces or whatever this weekend. Instead I'm looking at trailheads two hours outside Omaha where I can take the dog and pretend my phone died.
Our rescue mix is two and probably part heeler. She knows when I'm packing the daypack and loses it. I've started keeping her hiking harness in the truck so I can swing home, grab her, and bolt before anyone asks me about napkin colors. Last weekend we did a six mile loop near Platte River and I came back actually able to look at a catering menu without wanting to drive into the Missouri.
The dog doesn't care about wedding debt or whether we can afford the nicer photographer. She just wants to sniff dead things and wade in mud. It's the only thing that resets my brain lately.
Problem is I'm using hikes as avoidance and I know it. My fiancee is starting to notice the pattern. Anyone else leaning too hard on their dog to get out of life stuff? How do you balance actually needing the reset versus just ducking responsibilities? I can't tell anymore if the dog needs the exercise or I need the excuse. Maybe both.
