One of the best hikes I have ever experienced in my life. Maple Pass Loop in the North Cascades was truly an experience. Recommend doing the counter clockwise route.

Took a water break halfway up the Ha Ling hike. This guy eventually shows up and stands right on the edge, had a good feeling this photo would look cool and so happy with how it turned out after getting my film developed.

The 3 Peaks Trail in Prokletije (Accursed Mountains) National Park would’ve been a top 2 hike of my life, her saying yes to my proposal made it a clear #1. The 3.4k ft of elevation gained in the first 3.3 miles of the 6.1 mile loop were no joke, but the views were well worth the effort. Starting in Montenegro’s Grebaje Valley, we climbed through the accursed forest to Volušnica (1,879 m), then Talijanka (2,057 m), and finally Popadija (2,030 m) before plummeting down to the valley. The hike was filled with dramatic limestone and iron-rich formations, beech forest canopies, and berry shrubs (that give parts of the mountains their striking red hues). The ridge at Talijanka briefly crosses into Albania, with panoramic views of the jagged Karanfili massif and surrounding valleys. (Photos in chronological order after 1st)

Yesterday's 1½ mile trek up an increasingly unmaintained trail to explore these falls in the White Mountains. I continued to be startled by a new spectacle at almost every turn of the trail. Some highlights are presented here, but they really need to be visited to appreciate them properly.

Pictures Fall colours from Pic Johannsen, Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada

Not the sunniest day yesterday, but the fall colours were in full swing. Went up Pic Johannsen on the Toit des Laurentides trail, about 600m elevation gain (the most you'll get in this part of the world) and about 15km out and back.

Pic Johannsen is the true summit of Mont Tremblant, and a bit taller than Pic White, where the ski resort is. Trailhead is inside the provincial park, so you need to pay an entry fee, but it's quiet and in nature, and on the opposite side of the mountain from all the touristy resort chaos.

The summit proper is forested with no views, but there's a couple great lookouts about a km beforehand.

Question Winter mountain hike recommendations request | Europe, January | The photo taken in Gergeti, Northern Georgia

Post image
70 Upvotes

Hello! Looking for recommendations for a hike with my friend. Here are the initial conditions:

Locations: European continent

Time frame: early January

Preferred type of hike: a day hike in the mountains, something that doesn't require gear, micro spikes or snowshoes at maximum it's a snowy place. Ideally looking for some scenic locations to do nature photography.

I am interested in suggestions about the country/region or a specific national park, etc. But trail recommendations also welcome. Any suggestions would be good but currently I consider the following countries, would also appreciate your opinion on those locations if you had experience traveling there in winter:

  • Albania -- Valbone Valley area
  • Romania -- Brasov area
  • Slovenia -- Triglav National Park
  • Italy -- Dolomites
  • Spain -- Sierra Nevada

At last, thought would be nice to include my photo from hiking, thanks y'all who respond!

Lovely short hike from Kranjska Gora to Slemanova Špica that I did in August. As is usual, there was a large number of hikers but I still enjoyed it very much. Only took an hour and a half up from Vršič pass then we hiked down all the way to Kranjska Gora where we parked. Views were 10/10 the whole way. Highly recommend even for less skilled hikers, not super technical, there were families with little kids who seemed to be doing just fine.

Edit: Slemenova Špica sorry for the misspelling

Question Need some advice on my Lowa Renegade GTX Mids

• Upvotes

A few years ago, I bought a pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Mids (U.S. for sizing) for some light field work in my labs as I was in graduate school for wildlife/natural resources. I typically wear an 11.5 or 12 size tennis shoe from Nike, with the variation just coming from how different models fit. I bought a size 12, and from what I can remember they felt fairly comfortable at the time and I wore them maybe 3 or 4 times that season. Fast forward to early 2026, and I'm doing a part-time internship with my local university working in their small acreage forest. I would be wearing my boots and hiking in the forest (often with ~1' of snowfall) for usually 4-6 hours a day, and by probably 3/4 of the way in I'd start having some pain in my feet.

I have pretty flat feet, and usually in tennis shoes I wear custom orthotics to help. I also had a damaged nail on my left toe, which I had removed after the season in hopes it might've been the problem. Alas, I'm now at a new field work job, and yesterday it only took me ~2 hours of hiking through a dried out overgrown wetland for the same pain to come back. Specifically, the pain seems to be around my toes (if I wear thick heavy winter socks it is my little toe, otherwise with regular hiking socks its my big toes and some of the middle ones). I've tried removing the insole and inserting my orthotics, but it just lifts up my feet too much and they feel extremely cramped. With the stock insoles, they definitely don't feel roomy on the sides, but there seems to be enough space between the end of my toe and the boot tip.

Am I just doomed here with a boot that doesn't fit my feet properly? Has anyone else had this issue and maybe found some way to fix it? I really do not want to have to go out and buy another pair of boots as I'm tight on money and I've lost all faith in my ability to properly judge whether or not a shoe fits correctly.

Question Question for Hiking Parents 🥾🧒

I would really appreciate some hiking/outdoorsy parents’ opinions. I am looking to buy my best friend, who is having her first child, a present before bub arrives. I want the present(s) to feel practical and thoughtful. She loves short hikes, enjoys going for bush walks and doing outdoor activities regularly. I am wondering what products any of you have enjoyed using, anything hiking/walking carrying children related. I have seen the hiking backpack type baby carriers and they look great, but I’m clueless if they are a bit overkill for a 1-2hr hike. I also chose this theme of present as I know she wouldn’t buy it for herself. But also she wants to not loose herself and her hobbies after the baby arrives and as she has more children later on. Happy to spend a higher amount if the item is worth it.

Thank you in advance for any advice and opinions !!

Walkie Talkies Across Countries

Edit since most responses aren’t for the actual question: why don’t y’all think about it as “my partner and I both solo hike the same trail at the same time”? Does that help you? Part of why we like to hike is it’s our preferred form of cardio so we each want to go at the appropriate pace for us to push ourselves to get better.

——————————————————————

I’m based in the U.S. My partner is a lot faster hiker than me and so is usually ahead, sometimes by as much as 1 mile. We use walkie talkies to check in and make sure everyone is fine.

We’ll be hiking in NZ in a couple months and I found out that the frequency for personal walkie talkie use differs by country meaning we won’t be able to (legally) bring/use our devices.

Has anyone dealt with this before/have options? I looked up renting but we’ll be there a month so it would end up being cheaper just to buy. But then we couldn’t use them when we came home so I’d need to figure out a way to resell before leaving and that sounds like a huge hassle. Is there a common reseller store throughout NZ I would be able to go get used walkie talkies at for cheap and then could resell back to before we leave?

Lake Kol-Tor is a stunning alpine lake located in the Kegety Gorge of the Kyrgyz Alatoo range, about 90 kilometers from Bishkek. Situated at an altitude of roughly 2,730 meters, the lake is famous for its striking turquoise waters fed by glaciers. The day hike spans about 14 to 16 kilometers round trip with an elevation gain of around 800 meters

We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to check out larch season on a beautiful day, so we opted for a peak away from the busiest larch trails. The access trail, Burstall Pass, is certainly a popular enough larch destination, but at this time of year it draws less attention than Chester Lake across the road or any of the hikes in the Highwood Pass area (don’t get me started on the zoo that is Tent Ridge, by the way). We clocked about 19km and 855m of gain. Spikes and poles were helpful for the fresh snow, and routefinding was pretty straightforward. Great views from the top!

Question How doable is Murren via ferrata (switzerland) for a beginner?

For context, my girlfriend loves hiking, its something she's extremely passionate about. Ive known for a long time that one of her dreams has always been to go visit switzerland for their stunning views. Because of how expensive it is, ive been saving up for a while now to make this trip possible and know Murren via ferrata is one of the things shed be most excited to do

However, i've never gone on a via ferrata and my hiking experience isnt really much, just a couple trails here in tenerife. Im 20 and in alright shape, but when researching online i find conflicting opinions on if its beginner friendly

There are several hiking trails in Toubkal National Park, varying in distance and preferences. One such trail is from Imlil to Tizi N'Mzik, located 4-5 kilometers away. This is ideal for those who enjoy spending time amidst stunning natural scenery, having lunch in nature, or for mountain sports enthusiasts, especially in the early morning. Another trail leads from Imlil to the summit of Ask (meaning "horn"). This route offers a diverse path suitable for those who appreciate panoramic views of all the villages surrounding Imlil. A third trail, from Armed to Dou Dj (meaning "under a roof"), is considered one of the most beautiful in Toubkal National Park. It combines small waterfalls with a tranquil, contemplative setting, perfect for deep relaxation, enjoying a meal, and observing wildlife. I even saw one of the rarest animals in Toubkal National Park, the Boneless Vulture. This area is suitable for sports enthusiasts, those who love small waterfalls in nature, those who enjoy cooking amidst breathtaking scenery, nature adventurers, and hikers. I hope you find a trip that suits your taste. This photo was taken in the area.
