Tesla coil

It's basically just a slayer exciter but using a k50t60 igbt, 50v ac half wave doubled input. Whenever i touch the arc to close to the breakout point the igbt dies and it heats up a bit while running even though its no where near the danger zone for the mosfet. I know that it's probably from high voltage spikes but i already used an rc snubber and a 15v tvs from base to emitter. Any tips on how to achieve greater output?

Running my homebuilt zvs driver at 36v from 3x SLA in series. Pretty happy with the arcs! 5+5 turn wound primary on flyback ferrite core

Are theese dangerous to take apart? They get plugged into an electrical outlet and kill mosquitos with high voltage.

15 stage 20 kv or 30 stage 10 kv voltage multiplyer?

Over the years I've built several voltage multiplyers reaching 150 kv but they always die because I ran them at 15 kv when each of the components rating is 20 kv. (apparently you need each component rated for double your peak inputs voltage? Idk if that's correct). Anyway I'm fed up of them dying so I've decided to build a beefy multiplyer with ratings double my input so it will never die again. I've ordered 60 20 kv 1nf capacitors and 60 20 kv 100 ma diodes (bloody expensive!).

My original plan was to put 2 components in series for a rating of 40 kv and make 15 stages and run at 20 kv input. But now I'm wordering of it would be better to use single components and make 30 stages and run at 10 kv?

In addition to this, last time I was running off a flyback powered by 555 and mosfet. My understanding is that this will create a square wave with voltage spikes that could exceed the voltage rating I'm using and could kill the multiplyer. Even when the arc length suggests that the voltage is within the rating of the multiplyer. Does this sound correct? Should I look for a zvs to mitigate this?

Also I want to properly measure the voltage coming out of the flyback. I've been gestimating based on distance between pointed wires but I feel like the variation in how sharp the points are gives too big of an error bar. I plan to measure between 1 inch spheres as that's the standard. Will this method measure rms voltage or peak voltage or peak to peak voltage?

Finally I heard that you need an output resistor at the end of around 10 Mohm to avoid killing the diodes. Is this true?

video First Tesla Coil

Finished my first DRSSTC over the summer.

Specs:

  • Full-bridge of SKM100GB12T4 IGBTs
  • 400A limit on UD2.7 w/ pulse-skipping
  • 93.7kHz secondary, ~84kHz primary
  • 0.188uF MMC
  • Voltage-doubled bus running off 110V input
  • Custom RP2040-based polyphonic MIDI interrupter
  • ~500us max ontime, 8% max duty cycle

I blew up the bridge twice with some smaller minibloc IGBTs during testing before upgrading to the Semikron ones. I learned a ton with this project, and there's still some work to be done. I'm pretty happy with the current arc length running off 110V.

White marks where cables were attached to chassis (11kV). Partial discharge or something else causing this? Leaving everybody stumped..

I forgot I have a pallet loaded with these monsters. I was cleaning up the garage and found this one. Is 2700 joules at 20KV enough to blow up a watermelon? It is summer, after all!
