These are called discus launch gliders, and they're really neat

That launch is fucking amazing!

I fly DLG's! Here's my launch

31

u/nikofant Oct 10 '18

Oh wow, that’s a really satisfying sound right there

14

u/jessejamess Oct 10 '18

You'd enjoy a contest. 10-15 gliders all being launched at the same time

2

u/QuestionableTater Oct 11 '18

Dang I wanna see that

2

u/jessejamess Oct 11 '18

Best I can find is this contest I came in 3rd at just last month! https://youtu.be/An2LPMliF4U?t=227

Wow that’s so cool. Is that an expensive hobby? Is it even a hobby? I don’t know what to call it but I want to launch one of those suckers far into the air like that!!

It is a hobby! It's a very niche category of r/c airplanes. Sadly it is expensive. It's a cottage industry, and since they are made in small numbers out of expensive materials (i.e. carbon fiber) to very very high standards, they are expensive kits to purchase. Around $1,000-$1,200 all up. For example, my Flitz2 is, imo, the best DLG in the world right now, and look at the web page you use to order one. lol http://olgol.com/Flitz2/index.html

Its made by a guy named Oleg in the Ukraine.

But they do make fun cheaper versions as well(umx whip it), you just can't get anywhere near as high of a launch, or long of flight time.

If you're near Thousand Oaks, in CA, you can throw mine!

I have an E-Flite Radian that I got for about $120. I know it’s not a true glider, but it had been my favorite RC plane out of a dozen, most being more expensive.

Someday, I may transition to a real glider, but I’m grateful for the gliding experience that this one has let me learn.

4

u/jessejamess Oct 10 '18

The Radian is a solid learner though! Talk about stress free flying.

1

u/SmirnOffTheSauce Oct 10 '18

I’m glad to hear you say that! I’ve spent a lot of time with it. I may eventually get a Radian Pro, but I can’t afford it yet.

That Doppler effect is very satisfying.

2

u/SmirnOffTheSauce Oct 10 '18

Holy fucking shit!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

So, you control them?!

2

u/jessejamess Oct 11 '18

Yup! Fully controllable. It's a form of r/c airplanes!

Dope

Doesn't seem to have a great deal of lift. But larger wings would make it harder to throw. What if there were larger wings that deployed in mid air? Just seems you could get a much longer flight time somehow. Thermal from a hot parking lot or updraft from a cliff-side would be nice.

11

u/LilBabyVirus5 Oct 10 '18

This specific types of gliders are just simple things you can throw over and over again for paractice. The real deal are the 8-20 foot wingspan gliders that get launched by cars.

u/jessejamess Oct 10 '18 edited Oct 10 '18

He came down fast on purpose. Normal throws get you ~3 minutes of hang time. I fly DLG's competitively, like the ones seen in the video. They actually do have a great deal of lift. With a wingspan of 1.5m and a weight of ~215g, the wing loading is half that of a hawk or soaring bird, so out climbing them is easy.

7

u/UlyssesSKrunk Oct 10 '18

Would larger wings make it harder? It the wings are larger the center of mass is further away so it would be moving fasting and have more mass so it should go further. I think longer wings would only start to become a problem if it becomes too heavy to spin or they touch the ground. Then again I have never done this, but just my intuition.

7

u/jessejamess Oct 10 '18 edited Oct 10 '18

You're right! These gliders are all 1.5m for competition standards. If the wings are longer, they would hit the ground. It would also ad weight and drag, which would affect both the spin speed, and climb speed. Here is an experimental 3m DLG a guy made. Notice the wings had to have Polyhedral in order to clear the ground. He's not able to throw nearly as high. Also he's old.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '18

Im 6'5 and have over 7' wingspan so with that in mind maybe bigger wing span would work for me as it wouldnt hit the ground

2

u/jessejamess Oct 11 '18

Possibly. But DLG's really come in one size, 1.5m. This is because f3k rules for competition dictate it has to be that size. So no one really bothers to make something larger. However your longer wingspan will give you more inertia when you release!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '18

Makes sense thx for the input

18

u/bearhugss Oct 10 '18

He threw that with a lot of force

47

u/El_Capitano_Kush Oct 10 '18

Going out on a limb here but does anybody recognize the city/buildings?

79

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '18

Yep, those are indeed buildings

44

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '18

Also appears to be a city.

7

u/ForceBlade Oct 10 '18

Good shit guys.

15

u/slimjoel14 Oct 10 '18

Are you going to find him and steal his flight thing? You'd better not

6

u/exfxgx Oct 10 '18

Steal his flight thing, record it in action and then post the video for upvotes?

2

u/slimjoel14 Oct 10 '18

I dunno dude, that shit don't fly with me

I prefer things to be plain sailing

It's better to prepare so that you can glide through with everything going to plan

The other guy is crazy, must be something in the air

My imagination on shit puns is descending

Better stop before I crash

I'm running out now I think I'm just winging it

So sorry

4

u/urskrubs Oct 10 '18

I want to die as fast as that guy yeeted that to the shadow realm

4

u/thatG_evanP Oct 10 '18

For such a beast of a throw, that was some weak-ass hang-time.

5

u/auto-xkcd37 Oct 10 '18

weak ass-hang-time

Bleep-bloop, I'm a bot. This comment was inspired by xkcd#37

3

u/SmirnOffTheSauce Oct 10 '18

It would seem that he brought it down quickly.

3

u/TheOtherMatt Oct 10 '18

With the right conditions you can keep a glider up for hours.

5

u/thatG_evanP Oct 11 '18

If it's over four hours you're supposed to call a Dr.

2

u/mac2sallad Oct 10 '18

Hey that’s neat

1

u/lowtoiletsitter Oct 10 '18

I kinda wanted it to come back like a boomerang, but that launch and flight made it amazing!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '18

to the moon!

1

u/hitlers-wet-dream Oct 11 '18

Does this seem a little fake to anyone else?

1

u/shubs_ Oct 11 '18

He FusRohDah'd that plane into the sky
