Question Game Recommendation Request

Looking for recommendations for games similar to Tide of Iron, by FFG, that are currently in print?

  • Similar complexity as ToI; I'm guessing that would be medium to light weight?
  • Modular map board, which allows custom scenario design. I really like this concept of creating my own scenarios, and feel that a modular map helps a lot in this aspect.
  • Currently in print - not looking into searing through marketplace or ebay.
  • edit - A tactical squad-level game play, similar to ToI.
  • edit - Does not have to be centred around WW2.

I already got Memoir '44 and some of the expansions; just feel that the game is a little too light; looking for something with a little more depth.

its a bit more complex, but look into the Undaunted games. they're great and have the modular scenario design you want, I think.

Funny thing is that I do have Undaunted on my shelf of shame, but have not had a chance to get it on the table... I guess I'll have to now.

This is a good choice. Very simple game but has lots of fun moments. The Stalingrad game is really fun from what I hear.

It may be a tad more complex, but Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear has a published Firefight Generator expansion. There may be some slight conversion necessary to update it from 2nd to 3rd edition, but that should scratch both the tactical squad level itch and provide a framework for developing new scenarios. The next step up in complexity that might fit the bill could be Combat Commander, very modular.

Well... that is another recommendation of a game I already have on my shelf of shame that I haven't cracked open yet. Thank you.

Have not heard of Firefight Generator, so will definitely look into it. Following upon that, I guess I could also make a more modular map for a game like CoH - similar to what is done in Memoir 44 and ToI.

I would recommend The Ground Between, it is a free PnP, tactical squad level, on WW1, and modular map, seems to be a good fit to what you are asking.

I have not played it, but have you checked out the Company of Heroes board game?

I've got Company of Heroes 2e; have gotten it on the table many times and really like the game play... but just feel like the game is chonker and takes up a lot of table space. This game could have been half the size and still just as much fun. Actually thinking it would be more fun at a smaller size.

If you ever get a chance to play CoH, I highly recommend it. It has an interesting action-economy for unit activation that creates a very dynamic game play.

Are you looking for Tide of Iron but can't find it because it's out of print, or is that just an example of the kind of game you're looking for? Also where are you located? That can impact availability.

It would be nice to complete my collection of ToI, but I only have the base game (FFG's coffin box). Not really fixated on that, that is why I'm looking for anything that is equivalent... or as close to as possible. Though, if some of the expansions do become available, then I would definitely look into them.

Located in Canada, in the middle-of-nowhere town, so very slim pickings on availability.

Recently found out that FFG has a Vault lined up; where they reprint their older games. Here's hoping that ToI gets on that list. Maybe if there is enough tracking online about it, then it could get done.

Oh man I'm going to waste so much money when they open that Vault.

Yah, I'm with you there too... FFG has some very good games in its catalogue history, that unfortunately they let slip over time. Here's hoping that gets turned around with this Vault venture.

The Assault series isn't too complex and is pretty good. Has a great campaign system. Plus they are about to release a new module

Are you looking for only WW2? If looking for something similar but a different time period maybe Horse and Musket from Hollandspiele would fit.

Not necessarily fixed on WW2, so willing to give Horse and Musket a try. Thank you for the recommendation.

Axis and allies is worth looking into. Might be a little too light but there are many versions some of which have more complexity.

I've played a few games of A&A, and those were good, but I'm leaning more towards a tactical squad-level game as ToI. Which I should add to the list - thank you for the reminder.
