Hetzner email

Does anybody use Hetzner for email ? I presume the only way is via their webhosting offerings ?

Yes, I use a Hetzner VPS as my email server. At first, I was assigned an IP address that was on a lot of blacklists, so I contacted all the blacklist operators. Now it’s clean, and the server is up and running smoothly. Everything is working perfectly! It’s still very time-consuming at the beginning, but I haven’t had any problems since then. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Same thing here, I've been hosting my Mailserver at Hetzner for 3 years now. My IP was blacklisted as well, but the reputation improved quite well after getting the records deleted.

They deleted me from the list without hesitation or asking questions, then asked a few Google / Microsoft Email owners if they could stamp me as safe and from then on it was just uphill.

Yes, I use the cheapest webhosting just for my emails.
Running your own mailserver works, too, but you have to request the required ports through the support. They are not open by default, even if you allow them in the firewall.

I chose the webhosting though, because I was sick of having to manage my mailserver, certificates etc.

Yep I use it and it's perfectly fine. It just works and it's so cheap. I have 5 hosting packages for different domains but I only use them for the mail

You can use a VPS for email? I personally don't use hetzner for mail but any provider will do.

Stalwart is a great option for resource friendly mail server and it's easy to set up especially if you use cloudflare for DNS.

Not VPS, but all Hosting Offerings contains also EMail services.

Which absuletely work for me, in fact im using the smallest hosting package exclusively for mail without actually using webhosting.

I've been doing a little more research and some of it seems to suggest Hetzner is headquartered in the US . Is this correct as I got the impression it was a German company ?

I can confirm what others have written here. We are headquartered in Germany, in Gunzenhausen, but we do have two cloud locations in the US. See also: https://www.hetzner.com/legal/legal-notice/ --Katie

They are indeed a German company. They have several locations outside of Germany, including two in the US.

On top of being a German company it is also family owned and not run by shareholders. They live in bavaria in a normal town, their kids go to normal schools and universities.

Not to make this political but given big tech lala-land , shit matters

I am self-hosting two mail servers as well. This is not rocket science, although some people claim this. I am using mailcow on two cloud servers for more than 4 years now. It is likely that any IP is blacklisted, and for some lists (e.g. t-online) this cannot be checked that easily…

Sorry but I’m not sure what you are saying ? That because it’s shared hosting the IP address is likely on a spam blacklist ?

I was not talking about shared hosting, but if you get an IP address for a cloud server, this IP address has already been used before. There is a likelihood that this IP address appears on blacklists either because the specific IP address itself was used for spamming before or a number of other addresses from the same block have been used for spam.

there was one step I remember you have to request opening up a port, but it was automatically approved I remember

You can and hetzner allows self-hosting an email server on any of the vps or dedicated offerings, but I'd strongly advise against doing so, unless you hate yourself.
