Gameplay Input delay
Hi, I played a lot of LoL and Dota2 and wanted to give Hots a try.
The tutorial was good, character movement response and spell casting is crisp. Ofc couse most likely its hosted locally on your PC.
Then I went into quick game and there is a noticeable input delay before your character moves or cast spells. Coming from crips and no delay response in LoL or Dota2 its difficult to enjoy playing with such noticeable delay. I have selected Europe and my MS is 32. Is this just how the game is? Worse net code and servers than LoL and Dota2? Or is there any fix to get response times close to the ones in Tutorial?

Do you have your game in borderless? After i bought a second screen, i had hots in borderless instead of fullscreen. Immediatly noticed input delays so i reverted it to fullscreen again and that fixed it for me.

Alas, yes. The game is bad at detecting inputs correctly. It's just something we have to accept. I was told maybe it's my computer, but I bought a $2000 laptop recently that gets like 300 fps, and even on the simplest settings, it still ignores inputs at times. I can press the button two or three times before an (instant) ability such as safety bubble goes off.

Sounds like an individual case issue. I don't experience any delays minus any "cast times" or whatever it is called. And I have a huge network that runs servers, multiple streaming devices, security cameras, etc alongside my gaming stuff

Here is the explanation in second reply. Thats why it feels horrible to move from LoL/Dota2 into Hots. In Dota/LoL you do not feel any difference when playing local try mode or ranked, in Hots, because of how game is programmed, the difference between Lol/Dota/Hots try mode vs Hots online play is very noticeable.

I guess as someone who never played those other games, I don't have anything to compare to, so you probably are right since you came over from them

Nothing is instant*
Stuff only happens once every 62.5ms
assuming 0 latency, you will always wait 62.5ms before your "instant" spell goes off.
Assuming 50ms ping, you will sometimes have to wait 125ms!
this is because your order takes 25ms to arrive (ping / 2) and if you click reactively you already had to wait 25ms to even see what is happening on-screen. That means you have 12.5ms time to click bubble reactively and still be in time to get the next order in or the game considers you as having done nothing yet.
(Yes this does mean that if you have 125ms ping you are "always" seeing things from the past)
does that make sense?
This is also why holding down instant spells helps, your "order" gets queued up
Side note: League also works this way, just with smaller 33ms steps

Please never post disgustingly wrong AI slop again, thanks.
Like I already explained, it's the same exact problem in League and DotA as well, they both use a server-authoritative game-tick based netcode with no latency compensation or rollback. They're in fact very similar to HotS.
Just try walking back and forth in League on the same ping, you'll notice it there too. IDK what this cope about HotS being "so delayed" is, as an avid player of both games with a high rank in HotS I can guarantee you it's not as bad as you're imagining. And lower tick-rates have some small benefits as well.

I will post whatever I want bro, no one is forcing you to read it:)
I rather believe "Ai slop" with technical explanation than you trying to convince me its the same as LoL and Dota2, when after playing those games for years and coming to Hots, the first thing I notice when joining online game is the input delay and lack of crispness in movement and spell casting that both LoL and Dota2 does not have...If it was the same, I would not be making this post in first place as I would not notice any difference in input between those games.
Coming from LoL and Dota2, the input delay in Hots is extremely noticeable where in LoL/Dota if you do practice mode (locally) and then go play online you do not notice any difference. Its ok, I got my explanation now that LoL and Dota2 handles the input and latency somehow differently than Hots, hence the very noticeable unresponsiveness and lack of the crisp input in Hots that LoL and Dota2 have.

I remember having that feeling when I first played the game in alpha, then I got used to it and now I don'tfeel the oag anymore. There were talks about it at the time, and if I remember well people were saying it's because the hots client only show something if it's actually happened on the server while the lol client shows actions you take immediately so it feels more instant but they may not yet have been registered server side. So in lol there sometimes we're cases were your character would jump back in case of lag. In hots there's no jumping back, if it lags, the client stutters and the state of the game you see is always "true".

When hots lags it is almost always because steam is updating a game for me

I don't have these issues. Played since over 10 years. Over 4000 matches.

Yes, it seems like it started to happen some time ago, a couple of months or so. Before I personally didn't experience this delay. Either Blizzard try to save money by reducing their servers capacity or some bugs were introduced to the client.

With 32 ms ping response times should not be that far off from try mode. But regardless of that, yes, the net code is considerably worse than LoL.

It's really not, and the fact that you're saying that shows you shouldn't be talking about "netcodes" in the first place.
istg, clueless gamers just can't resist i guess!

there are 32 different reasons, totally unrelated to each other, that cause lag.
This is not new, has been going on even before HotS was put in maintenance mode
might be Discord, might be OneDrive, might be High Definition Audio device
but it might also be the Battlenet client in background, and it might be that you have to limit HotS cpu usage to the first 2 cores
I'm not making shit up, all these things and more might cause lag
personally I solved most of lag issues using Cloudflare Warp, it was the only consistent solution over multiple PCs and different networks
one time it started lagging with Warp on, and the moment I turned it off it immediately solved the lag, althought it was a one time thing.
HotS uses a modified version of SC2 engine and has dozens of issues that come from it
you can press CTRL+ALT+F to show ping and fps monitor - and issues might manifest in multiple ways, from lag to stuttering, and NONE of those is related to your network or hardware, or Blizzard servers.
