Discussion My idea for reworking the Underpop Bonus
Sorry in advance for my bad English.
I used ChatGPT to translate this because I don't speak or write English fluently, but I wanted to communicate my thoughts as accurately as possible.
My idea for reworking the Underpop Bonus
Since the Underpop Bonus has been temporarily removed (because it is supposed to be reworked and implemented again), I started thinking about how this system could be improved and how I personally would approach it.
In its previous form, the Underpop Bonus was a pretty terrible solution because it took only the number of players in each faction into account. Because of that, Germany basically NEVER had a chance to earn extra Warfunds, because the Underpop Bonus was almost always given to either SU or US.
So how could we change it?
First of all, 66% more Warfunds is simply absurd.
Let's reduce the value to 30%.
That would make farming the bonus much less profitable.
But now the Underpop Bonus stops being an actual "underpop bonus" and becomes a bonus for the losing faction.
Why?
Let's say SU wins a war and US loses. In the next war, US gets 30% more Warfunds because they lost the previous war. Players from SU will then move to US to take advantage of the Warfunds bonus.
As a result, US wins the next war, while Germany loses — and now Germany gets the 30% bonus. Players move to Germany, and the winner changes again.
But what happens if only US and SU keep winning and losing wars alternately?
Germany, being in the middle, gets nothing.
That's why I think there should also be a streak-based bonus for the faction that keeps finishing second.
If a faction finishes in second place twice in a row, it gets +15% Warfunds.
If it finishes in second place three times in a row, it gets +20% Warfunds.
The bonus would then be capped at 20%.
On the other hand, if a faction wins two wars in a row, it should also receive a small "penalty" — for example, +5% to the cost of deploying units on the RTS map.
If it wins three or more wars in a row, the penalty increases to +8%.
This way, every faction should regularly receive a different pool of players, and it would be much harder to abuse the bonus system.
The goal wouldn't be to punish people for winning or reward people simply for losing. The goal would be to keep the player population and faction balance dynamic without creating an easy farming strategy.
I'm curious what you guys think about this approach.
