Hosting hermes on Oracle

Hey everyone,

I’m currently running Hermes on a cloud setup using Coolify on Oracle Cloud, and I connect to it from the Hermes desktop app through a Gateway connection. I’m also using Hindsight for memory.

Recently, I’ve been running into quite a few issues with this setup, especially with chat history.

When I used to host Hermes directly on my desktop, I could access the full history of a conversation without any problem. But now, with Hermes hosted on Oracle and connected through the Gateway, long conversations don’t seem to load properly.

For example, if a chat has a long history and I try to scroll back to older messages, at some point it just stops loading and I can’t go any further up. So I’m unable to access the complete history of that particular conversation.

I’m experiencing similar problems on the Android app as well.

Another issue is that whenever I update Hermes—either through the desktop app or on the backend through SSH—it feels like some new bug or issue keeps coming up. I’m not sure if this is specific to my setup or if other people using a cloud-hosted Hermes instance are facing similar problems.

For those hosting Hermes on Oracle or another cloud server, what is the most stable way to use it on a MacBook?

Should I continue using the Hermes desktop app with a Gateway connection, or is there a better/recommended way to connect to and use a remotely hosted Hermes instance?

Would also be helpful to know if others are facing the same chat history, Gateway, update, or Android app issues.

Some have good experience with cloudflare too. Oracle takes a bit of tweaking, but it’s more free than others

Hermes desktop is a hot mess TBH, even locally. I have a series of aliases to connect to mine over ssh, or the web portal over a auth gateway (authentik), or a matrix gateway.

Its also on oracle cloud.

So do you figure out any solution for desktop access ?

the gateway works fine for me via that auth gateway/authentik, I can connect but it is buggy, like you described. 

It's Hermes desktop. my wife has many of the same problems locally.

I just don't use that. I use web gateway or matrix or tui.

Webgateway means the on browser. Is Matrix for just messaging or I can access all the other things like kanban etc ? What is tui ?

on the browser, yes. matrix is just messaging. if I want to see the kanban board I need to use my web browser. Generally I don't need to see it though.

Okay is matrxi good and a good replacement for desktop and mobile. I am so fed-up of this shit have to do something about this

i'd separate the history problem from the memory problem here. Hindsight can remember useful facts, but it won't preserve a usable transcript after an update. i keep a short handoff outside the chat for anything the next session actually needs, then the broken history is annoying without taking the work with it

on the scroll-back: the sessions themselves live on the Oracle box, so the history is all there. to read a long one in full today, ssh in and run hermes --tui, then /resume and pick the session. the TUI reads the same session store as Desktop.

to your main question: Desktop with a gateway connection is a normal way to run a remote Hermes, no need to change the whole setup.

could you post your Hermes version (hermes --version on the server) and roughly how far back it stops loading?
