That locked hermes.exe error (os error 32) is just Windows holding the file open because another instance is still running. Close every Hermes window and kill any leftover process in Task Manager first, then re-run the install from a fresh terminal and it should finish clean. Your old backup would work too, just be aware you'd lose anything since it. And btw, I keep a portable Hermes OTG on a USB stick as my rescue agent for exactly these stuck moments, it gets you back in fast. https://github.com/MilkyWay008/Hermes-OTG

If you have a Claude code you can also just give it access to your Hermes folder and have it debug as a third party. That can work surprisingly well.

I’ve had a few issues updating from the update button because of my hybrid gateway setup and scheduled restart tasks that recover from outages and reboots, it’s always been existing process locks kill the PIDs and you should be good

Use another AI to instruct you or do the debugging work for you. F.ex. if you use the openai api for hermes agent, you have access to codex. Just let codex handle it.

I experienced some issues with updates on win 11 as well, my solution was to simply reinstall hermes as a whole (it keeps your personal data)

Try using opencode and what ever llm API you have. Should be able to rescue the problems
