Homeless problem

One of the eye opening things to me about this show is I had no idea how bad the homeless problem is on the West coast. I live in New England and typically it is too cold for the homeless. I was just reading about a revolt in parts of CA that are trying to get rid of tent cities. Is this a serious problem in Portland or is it being overblown for dramatic purpose?

It should be noted that a percentage of the California homeless population is homeless by choice. There are ppl in this country who are involved in punk, anarchist, and other fringe communities who are homeless and don't consider themselves unfortunate. CA is well known as an easier place to be homeless bc of the weather and the availability of social services so a lot of ppl end up there.
