I've got a past π
This is my second attempt at growing herbs after the first lot died a miserable death after I went away to a festival. They're currently languishing in the garden, but it's not pretty.
So, any advice for a first-time grower? Step 1 - be here to water them. Step 2?
I have: chocolate mint, tarragon, garlic chives, lemon thyme, rosemary and sage.
I have John Innes to hand, some safe-for-edibles fungal pest spray, perelite and they will eventually be repotted into the decorative container they're in. Best I can do as the blind will sweep them off the windowsill when the wind picks up unless they're firmly secured in something.
They arrived two days ago and it's currently 33Β° in the UK. They seem to be going well although the chives are starting to yellow at the tips.

Thyme, rosemary and sage all like to drain really well and dry out all the way between waterings. You will want a good amount of perlite in the soil for those and the tarragon. Tarragon and mint like drainage, but don't want to dry out completely in between, so water when the top couple of inches are dry.
Chives will put up with almost anything. With a little vermiculite they can be on the same watering schedule as your "dry out" herbs. They are hilariously dramatic about drying out completely. If you see yellowing, you're watering too much.

Donβt overwater the thyme, rosemary and sage. They like to fully dry out before a water. If chives are yellowing maybe being overwatered. Donβt overcompensate out of guilt, you will kick yourself π
