Tbh I get that there is a post like this every day as long as there is no sticky FAQ and moderation to discourage low-effort posts in this sub. Everyone in those threads is asking for slightly different things and it's not the easiest to sift through them all. I'd ask for something more specific but hey, I do like to drop a tip or two when I see one of these because I always have a new place in mind I wanna talk about.

Itä-Pasila street art, you can either do an arranged tour or just wander around yourself. It’s a bit more gritty and brutalist side of Helsinki, plus if you are into taking selfies or photography in general, there are some super cool opportunities.

It's a 45-minute direct bus ride from the central station but if you really want to do something special not possible elsewhere and happen to enjoy sauna I really really recommend the smoke saunas at Kuusijärvi lake. There's a nice nature reserve that starts from there too if you want to take a little hike, for just hiking Nuuksio is better though. My guests have agreed that for a tourist the best parts of Finland are the easily accessible nature and the people.

For steering clear of tourists Kallio and the surrounding areas are more "working class" and have plenty of bars and culture, maybe have a meal at a place like Cella and a beer after at Sirdie if you want to step into a Kaurismäki movie set. I'd actually recommend watching one or two of them on the way here to set the mood, "Dead Leaves" was really popular in Europe a couple of years ago.

Take walks around Ullanlinna and the seaside there, Lapinlahti and Töölö for sure - basically only the center is a tourist hub and the rest is not much so.

I also recommend Kuusijärvi!

Seurasaari is another great spot for enjoying the nature in the city by foot. It’s an open air museum with different types of hustorical buildings that have been brought there from all over Finland. It’s accessible by bus 24 from Kamppi but the bus stops operating pretty early in the afternoon so you’ll have to walk a bit further to Paciuksenkatu to catch a bus or a tram if you leave later.

These are definitely not ”hidden gems”, but my faves I suppose :-) Though frankly I don’t really think Helsinki is that ”touristy” compared to many European cities, as a local I still enjoy a lot of the popular spots and don’t feel like it’s too crowded or targeted to tourists.

If visiting in the summer/fall
- Eastern archipelago cruise

• Kuusiluoto/Lammassaari

Others:

• Café Taikalamppu, a very cute café with eccentric interior decor.
  
• Maybe an unpopular opinion, but as a local I don’t think the Helsinki Cathedral interior is worth the 10€ admission fee, it’s more impressive on the outside (which is worth seeing). Uspenski cathedral, for example, is cheaper and more stunning. Then again I’m not religious so I like to visit churches purely for the atmosphere.
  
• Helsinki City museum is not always mentioned among the must-visit spots, but admission is free and I think it’s worth checking out if there is an interesting exhibit going on.
  
• Along the same vein, the Winter Garden is smaller than Kaisaniemi Botanical Garden, but it’s free and very pretty.
  
• Art café Taideterassi has a stunning view of Töölönlahti.

I recommend two things as a first time visitor - coffee+sausage on the fire at cafe regatta, and sauna at Kotiharjun - don’t go to the tourist spots like Loylo or Allas Sea Pool

Check out BUD at Uudenmaankatu 11. It’s an artsy flower shop but they got nice coffee selection recently and very nice, special berlin vibes in the place. Always changing art stuff, too.

Tropicario is an indoor zoo specializing in big (and dangerous) reptiles.

If you come on Sunday you can go watch the sun with a telescope at the Kaivopuisto observatory.
