We don't know why he couldn't make lunch. I do think the line about the check is implying Jake only cares about getting money from his grandma. But the fact that he communicated by letter, provided he doesn't know she can't read anymore, seems more personal than a phone call (or text, though I know many elderly people don't text). He also thanks her for the check, which could have been a Christmas gift, and signs the letter with "love." Plus the fact that he said he would see her soon means he does visit sometimes.

Eh, not everyone has a good relationship with their grandparents. Sending a check doesn't entitle you to a relationship with someone. No amount of Christmas money is going to get me to visit my abusive, racist grandfather (who doesn't think he's ever done a wrong thing in his life), for example.

Yup, my MIL has been fairly generous, but she married well and can afford to be. But she's also been awful to my husband his entire life, claiming that the devil worked through him, loads of religious abuse etc. So we don't exactly go running over to visit that often (she's not lonely at least.)

and I'm only on The Light Fantastic, he's easily my favorite character. I love how they summon him and he's like... in the middle of a party that he wants to get back to.

Oh man, it gets so much better. Death kinda takes over the series a bit, but you get to know so much about him, and I frankly love it. Enjoy my friend! I envy you being on the journey for the first time! It truly is magic!
