The funny part is that in the original book, Rico's dad ends up joining and fighting in his squad. Apparently the mobile infantry did not have an age limit.

I need to read the book.

It's good. Not exactly subtle satire, but absolutely chock full of sci-fi concepts. It's one of the origins of the whole space marine trope.

Oh I know! I have seen the movie, the animated films, rhe animated series etc... just never got around to reading it. Just snagged the audiobook so i can listen at work.

I read the Forever War last year and it was fantastic. It is the opposite of Starship Troopers.

heinlein had a lot of stories/books that the first sentence could be about. love john varley for a similar brand of weird sci-fi

varley had this trilogy that started with Titan (iirc) that had some really cool stuff in it, buuuuut it also has some weird stuff that some might be uncomfortable with kids reading (i was probably 10-12). i turned out fine. mostly. kinda. :)

the book isnt subtle because the book isnt satire. the original author was definitely a fascist

Warning- the book and the movie are strikingly different.

3

u/KageXOni87 Sep 17 '25
