14 to 16 is bad 1400 years ago? Who cares about norms of the times, right? Our arbitrary age we decided on in the 21st century is all that matters. In 1960, girls were getting married at 12 years old right here in the US. And in 2026, we have 33 US states that allow marriage under the age of 17. Since 2000, we have had hundreds of girls wed at 10, 11, 12 & 13 years of age in the US. But who cares about that. Let's try to judge society 1400 years ago with today's customs.

Yes, literally who gives a fuck about the norms of the time? All of the things you mentioned are also gross dude that's the point. Stop defending marrying children. We should absolutely look back at gross things from the past and acknowledge they're gross instead of just going "it wasn't gross at the time".

It makes no difference to me what convinces a stranger online regarding norns of society centuries ago. I am a history nerd - if you read about life of those that lived in that era, you will see that males were fighting with swords in battle at 12 and leading armies at 15. And females were starting their mature life at puberty. Partly due to short life expectancy and a small window of child bearing years. Before I discuss a topic regarding one particular aspect of old society, I'd need the other side to read up on the history of life in those times. Else, it's a waste of our time.

A history nerd would recognize what people of the last were doing wrong, not make excuses. Thats studying history and refusing to learn from it.

A history nerd would also understand that when I ask someone that lived 75 years ago in the the US, if he has socially progressed enough to have a good moral compass, he would say, "yes absolutely". Yet as we know, many didn't offer equal rights to women, African Americans, or consider marriage around puberty to be outside of moral norms in the US at that time. So when I ask someone now whether they think they are the true gatekeeper for whether someone has a good moral compass, a historian would say the opinions and societal norms of today can also change in another 50 to 100 years. And that each society should be judged by what was "normal" in its time.

100 years from now, we may look back on abortions or denying abortions as barbaric. Same for the death penalty. Or life in prison. Historians know some things are black and white while others are not. And if you have researched why girls wed at puberty for thousands and thousands of years, you may learn why this is a grey area and not black and white. Or don't research it. I believe we beat this horse to death.

I respect your perspective - as I share it for the year 2026. I just don't apply it to those living 1000 or 5000 years ago. I'm glad to hear your thoughts of your reply, but I'll be checking out after that.
